Discovery Bay Beach Festival 2015 International Coastal Rowing Beach Sprints I. Introduction 1. Invitation We are pleased to inform you that Coastal Rowing Beach Sprints under the Discovery Bay International Beach Festival 2015 will be held on 29th November 2015 (Sun). This is the first Beach Rowing Sprint event held at Discovery Bay and the new format will follow the concept introduced by the International Rowing Federation (FISA) for Beach Sprints. It is believed that it will be an exciting event and your team s participation will greatly enhance the competition atmosphere. 2. Schedule of Events The racing event will be held on Sunday 29 November, throughout the day. There will be an opportunity on Saturday 28 November for crews to take part in a social row from Discovery Bay to Mui Wo and back (see map below) for some lunch, and to practice on the race course at Discovery Bay. There will also be a Barbeque on the Saturday late afternoon at Lantau Boat Club on Discovery Bay Beach for overseas rowers and any others who would like to join. There is no charge for either the Mui Wo social row or the Barbeque, but rowers should bring cash to pay for their own lunch at Mui Wo (around HKD 200 depending on how hungry you are ). Anyone wishing to join the Race training, Mui Wo social row or the Barbeque on Saturday should sign up in advance by emailing Allan Bell at rowing-chair@lantauboatclub.com. II. Racing Event Details 1 Event Format The Coastal Rowing Beach Sprints will be held with up to four lanes and a beach finish format at Discovery Bay Beach. Distance of all the races is about approx. 500 meters. The start and the finish will be on the beach. The race course will involve a slalom element- below is a potential course- exact course to be confirmed. 2 Events Men s Women s Mixed Double Sculls (M2x) Double Sculls (W2x) Double Sculls (Mix2x) 3. Rules of Racing The races shall be rowed in accordance with the Rules of Racing to be circulated shortly before the event. 4. Entry Procedure Entries must be received by 14 th November 2015. The entry must include the events to be entered, the total number of athletes in the team, and the number of officials accompanying the team.
The Association has the right to decide the final number of entries. 5 Eligibility Entries will be welcome from Hong Kong and Overseas Teams representing either Federation or Clubs. 6 Entry Fee 150 HKD/rower if not in full time education. 100 HKD/rower if in full time education Entry Fee must be settled when submitting the Final Entry Entry fees must be paid the latest on 20 th November by bank transfer to: Lantau Boat Club Ltd HSBC 023-276884-838 7 Boats & Oars The Association will provide boats and sculls for each event. There will be no hiring charge and boats will be shared. 8 Uniform Members of the same crew are encouraged to compete with the same uniform clothing and in the official uniform of their Federation or Club.
III.Transportation Details Venue Location Discovery Bay Beach is a popular sightseeing destination in Hong Kong, Lantau Island that attracts tourists and local residents. The Shopping Area just beside the Venue. IV. Information for Overseas Crews I. Introduction of Hong Kong 1. Weather Conditions Hong Kong, located in the South China Sea, enjoys sub-tropical weather. The records from the past ten years show average temperatures in November of between 19 0 and 26 0 Celsius and 7 hours of sunshine per day. Although the long summer season does occasionally experience typhoon conditions, and average temperature drops from the summer months, these are rare in November. 2. Geographical Environment Hong Kong represents a city region of 1,104 sq. km, covering four main areas of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and the Outlying Islands. Victoria Harbour, one of the world s most renowned deep-water harbours, lies at the centre of the city itself, and along its shore are situated the main business districts of Central, Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui with a multitude of tall buildings set against the mountain backdrop of Hong Kong Island. A short distance from the city centre are the beautiful beaches of Repulse Bay, the street markets of Stanley, and the seafood restaurants along the waterfront of Sai Kung. The picturesque islands of Lantau, Lamma and Cheung Chau are less than one hour away from the Central District by ferry. 3. Vaccination There is no vaccination requirement for Hong Kong. 4. Currency The currency in Hong Kong is Hong Kong Dollar ($) and banknotes and coins are easily identifiable. There are $0.1, $0.2, $0.5, $1, $2, $5 and $10 coins; and $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000 banknotes. You can buy Hong Kong Dollars at foreign exchange banks and other authorized money exchangers. At the international airport, currency exchange counters are usually open in 24 hours. The official exchange rate is HKD7.8 = USD1. 5. Visa Requirements Hong Kong has traditionally adopted a liberal and open immigration policy. Nationals of about 170 countries and territories are allowed visa-free visits to Hong Kong for periods ranging from seven to 180 days. Water Quality Hong Kong enjoys one of the safest water supplies in the world. Water samples taken regularly throughout the supply and distribution system are checked against the World Health Organization s Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality. With this international standard of reference, travellers can rest assured the water supplied in all parts of Hong Kong is safe for consumption.
