A VERY BRITISH EVENING WITH THE SOLIHULL SEVEN On Sunday 8 th September I had the great pleasure to attend the Solihull Arts Theatre for a Last Night of the Proms organised by the seven Lions Clubs in the Solihull Borough. PROMS CONTINUED The event was put together with a committee comprising members from Balsall Common, Castle Bromwich, Exhibition, Knowle and Dorridge, Marston Green, Shirley and Solihull Lions Clubs, with a not inconsiderable amount of leadership from PDG Doug Cross who also acted as MC for the night. A full house, some 330 people, was thoroughly entertained by The Flowers Band, a brass band from Gloucester, who put on a staggering display of musicianship. Demand for tickets had outstripped the venue s capacity and those who were able to get in left saying how much they had enjoyed it and that they hoped it would be done again next year. This was the sort of event that demonstrates what Lions can do if they work together. The night was also my first meeting with the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Joe Tildesley, and his wife Mrs Joan Tildesley. They really are a nice couple and I look forward to meeting them again at Balsall Common s charter and District Convention.

ON YOUR MARKS GET SET GOING In support of Christine s charity of the year, Me & Dee, I am challenging the district to find me at least one 10K to 10 mile race in each Zone to run during the year. I have now completed the first of these races - the Shirley Lions Fun Run - in a time of 53 minutes for the just over 10K route. Apart from a biting wind, conditions were good for the runners, if not for the spectators, but with heavy rain forecast some casual runners decided not to come. Before starting the race itself On arrival I registered with Lion Ken Barker Had my picture taken with Shirley Lion Finishing laps 1 and 2 Met Harry s mum, Georgie, representing the charity for the day - Help Harry Help Others. Finishing lap 3 note the person finishing the race behind me
Sprint finish to end MAKING THEIR MARK This has been a bumper month for new members and I would like to congratulate the clubs involved for their efforts. I would like to welcome the following new members who joined the Family of Lions since my last newsletter: All in all I was very pleased with my time (just under 50 minutes as I passed through 10K being my best for the year) and this should serve as a guide to those of you wanting to enter the guess the total time competition. If you wish to sponsor me you can do so online at https://mydonate.bt.com/events/medeerun/102104 and, for an added incentive, if you add a comment when making your donation guessing the total time it will take me for all the races, I will give a prize at the end of the year to whoever gets closest. By the time you read this I will also have completed Zone A s contribution, a 5K run in aid of prostate cancer charity Balls to Cancer in Wolverhampton.
