Townsville Portlandia 2020 Townsville: A Metropolitan Landscape Concept Design Competition 0413178182 21 Second Avenue Mount Isa QLD 4825 david.fletcher@axiseng.com.au www.miepco.com.au
Miepco proposes the Portlandia 2020 development. This involves the relocation and modernisation of the Port of Townsville, from its current historic location close to the CBD to a modern offshore facility at Cape Cleveland allowing it to grow and compete efficiently into the future with larger vessels and no dredging required. This will include a freight integration hub incorporating a large rail yard, roll on roll off, bulk minerals and container handling with road rail transfer between Stuart and Cape Cleveland supporting the new efficient port and providing a broader freight integration hub linking north south, east west and port connections with easy access to industrial precincts and state development land. This allows the redevelopment of the current port site into a vibrant integrated eco marine leisure precinct with a world class golf course, high density housing and year round cultural facilities driving renewal in the city and region. The Jewel in the crown will be shared public park areas, shared avenues and the Bombora Tsunami Whirlpool VISION: To develop a world class urban and coastal living environment To achieve this vision the current Port of Townsville area will be transformed into a fully integrated eco marine leisure precinct with a world class golf course, high density housing and year round cultural facilities. A new Townsville super stadium called the Cleveland Pavilion incorporating an integrated transport hub and the Bombora Tsunami Whirlpool will be developed. Funds coming from the sale of this development will fund the new infrastructure for the new port and stadium and increase the development of the CBD and strand with a new bridge across Ross Creek connecting the strand to Archer Street and the new southern access road. It both provides a focus for the city to grow and development and streamlines the transport infrastructure. The Cleveland Pavilion An 80,000 seat Super Stadium will be built on the old rail yards. It will be called the Cleveland Pavilion and will become a legendary icon of the North. In the way that Suncorp Stadium / Lang Park in Brisbane is known as the Cauldron, visiting teams will receive a rousing reception when they go north to the Pavilion. The naming rights sponsor s name would replace the word Cleveland and hence it would be the 1300 SMILES PAVILION for example. THE STADIUM NORTHERN AUSTRALIA CONCEPT We support the Stadium Northern Australia concept with on the old rail yards with additional features. Construction prior to 2018 could see commonwealth games events held here. TRANSPORT INTEGRATION: The key to liveability A public transport hub will be integrated into super stadium (Cleveland Pavilion) combining road rail with links to the marinas and tourist cruises etc and future light rail initially run as bus routes. A large multi lane round-a-bout will encircle the stadium with connections to all the major arterial roads to ensure maximum performance of the transport network especially at peak times without congestion. 3 P age 21 Second Avenue Mount Isa Qld 4825 david.fletcher@axiseng.com.au www.miepco.com.au
Existing and future main arterial roads are shown below and it is worth noting that the bridge over Ross Creak will at last provide smooth traffic flows and a connection where Flinders Street meets the Strand. OVERLAY OF EXISTING PORT OF TOWNSVILLE High density housing will share common access park land. High Density Housing around existing wharf areas will have marina access and be included in the body corporate The many marina facilities will cater to the luxury super yacht market and underpin tourism along the entire coast. Service and maintenance and marine industry will flourish as a result. 4 P a g e 21 Second Avenue Mount Isa Qld 4825 david.fletcher@axiseng.com.au www.miepco.com.au
Townville s year round good climate will make the costal golf course idyllic and world famous. More summer swimming options for year round tourism At the north most tip of the Portlandia 2020 development will be a huge public swimming pool and public park land with ample parking provided. PROPOSED FIRST STAGE OF CAPE CLEVELAND PORT Relocate the Port of Townsville from its current historic location to a more modern off shore facility in deeper water off Cape Cleveland which will eliminate regular dredging requirements within the Great Barrier Reef Marine area. This will allow it to handle larger vessels and operate more efficiently. With the cooperation of environmental groups, current operational permits would be exchanged for less invasive ones.
