A Note to our Northside Neighbors: The 20162017 year was a year of transition. A number of our board members moved on or moved into new roles. We brought on several new board members who brought renewed energy and excitement, but the resulting reorganization caused several shifts in the operation of our board and our civic league. While our board was in transition, we also had a quickly dwindling bank account, which severely limited our newsletter distribution options. We worked hard to keep our newsletter active; however, the combination of a limited board and a limited budget meant that we struggled to keep our popular newsletter circulating at the same intervals as you were previously accustomed. But we are not the kind of people who quit! We heard you and we heard your complaints regarding our struggles with distribution. We know that you love to stay connected and to hear about your neighborhood, so we have worked hard to re organize ourselves to make it possible for us to recreate a renewed and reliable newsletter! You will notice a few changes. We are still working with a small and busy board and a small but growing budget so the Northside News will be issued on a quarterly, rather than monthly, basis. Please be sure to be on our email list and to follow us on Facebook and Instagram. The newsletter will be distributed electronically every month, to remind you of our major developments and we will continue to use email and social media for updates in between issues of the Northside News. Of course, the best way to stay informed is to come to our monthly meetings! If you are not on our email list, then please send a quick message to northsidecivic@gmail.com. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email or give us a call. We are here to help! Northside Civic League s Food Forest On September 12, our membership chair, Jen Stringer, discovered a grant application through the Department of Neighborhood Development, which would grant up to $2,000.00 for a Rain Retention Garden proposal. And thus an idea was planted! A quick four days later and a completed application was submitted, just hours before the deadline! the rain reaches the ground and, second, the trees and shrubs planted will absorb close to 1,000 gallons of run off water. In this planned location, a significant amount of storm water runs into the street gutters, causing noticeable flooding at times of high rainfall. Our garden will help filter this excess water. While rain retention is the primary goal of the Rain Retention Food Forest project, it also provides neighborhood beautification, opportunities for community engagement, neighborhood access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and serves as an outdoor classroom for both the school and the community. Aside from water retention issues, neighbors on this corner have requested a landscape buffer between the basketball court and the neighborhood. Public works has already planted a series of trees in response to the neighborhood s requests for buffer and beautification around the southeast corner of the school basketball court. The city plan allows for more trees, decorative shrubs, and annual planting however the installation is not within the city s current plan. Our proposed project will create useful buffer of diverse vegetation, replacing the current grassy surface, beautifying the neighborhood. If we get the grant from the city, neighborhood and community engagement will be the backbone of our project. So this is why we need you, Northside! This grant will provide the funds necessary to allow the Civic League to engage the neighborhood to invest the time and energy to develop an asset for the community. The Rain Retention Food Forest will provide an outlet for volunteers to come together and develop face to face relationships with their neighbors building bonds which could last lifetimes. Stay tuned! We will have announcements for the future of the project soon! So, what is the proposal? Our proposal is to plant a Rain Retention Fruit Forest with native fruit and nut trees, fruit bearing bushes, flowers, edible herbs, and root vegetables to mimic the characteristics of a multicanopy forest on the grounds of Mary Calcott Elementary School so that it may serve as an outdoor classroom for the school as well as the neighborhood. This planting will retain the rain on the school property in two ways; first, the multistory canopy will slow the rate at which 5
