3 Presidents Message November 2014 Greetings, This newsletter is being written on the last evening of a week-long visit to London Ontario; making the re-acquaintance of the youngest grandson who has just turned one year. Today the temperature was 20 degrees Centigrade and the final walk in the park, spectacular. The magnificent trees in this city shed golden and red leaves; transforming the pathways into a glorious carpet. Back to soggy Sechelt tomorrow. Did you get to see the Funtastics "Take Me Back to Dixie" show last month? It was a great success and many thanks go to all who contributed to the afternoon. As before, the auditorium was set up 'cabaret style', complete with appropriate decor on the walls and tables. Extra seating had to be made available for many last minute attendees; audience participation was encouraged and the beverage sales were brisk. November traditionally is a fairly quiet month for the Centre. Activities have settled into their routines and Christmas preparations have yet to start. However, the Annual Bake and Craft Sale is at the end of this month; your support either by supplying goodies or buying them will be much appreciated. Also this month, Remembrance Day is celebrated. The Centre will be closed to all activities on the morning of November 11. Please respect this time to honour those who give and/or have given so much in order for Canada to remain the safe and peaceful country we enjoy. The Centre's wreath will be laid at the Sechelt Cenotaph by Phil Green, one of our Directors. This is a faithful service that Phil has provided for us for several past years. Civic Elections are being held mid-november. This opportunity for individuals to get out there and vote is a hard won duty as well as a right and should not be ignored. Bear in mind that if one didn't vote then one can hardly complain once the newly elected incumbents start making unwelcome decisions. The clocks go back at the beginning of November - lighter mornings, but dismal evenings! Let's hope the dogs adjust sooner this year than they did last year. These may be ordered form the kitchen cashier and picked up then to be taken home. Why not stock up on a number of these delicious meals to be used when the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre s kitchen is closed during the Christmas break?
5 DriveABLE Cognitive Assessment The DriveABLE assessment is similar to an eye or hearing test; you cannot study to pass. However, we can explain the process and if you wish accompany you to the assessment, which is conducted using a touch screen computer. If you have been informed you need to take the DriveABLE test, and would like to talk about it, please ask at the Office. We Have A Monthly Friendship Tea! It s on the first Tuesday of the month from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Everyone is welcome! The next one will be on November 4th. Clayton s Grocery as well as IGA Marketplace will give the Centre a credit that can be used to help offset some of the cost of providing the delicious lunches to the members every day. Remembrance Day ~ November 11th Remembrance Day commemorates Canadians who died in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. The first Remembrance Day was conducted in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth. Originally called Armistice Day, it commemorated the end of the First World War, "the War to end all Wars", on Monday, November 11, 1918 at 11:00 AM (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month). From 1923 to 1931, Armistice Day was held on the Monday of the week in which November 11 fell. Thanksgiving was also celebrated on this day. In 1931, M.P. Allan Neill introduced a bill to hold Armistice Day on a fixed day - November 11. During the bill's introduction, it was decided the word "Remembrance" would be used instead of "Armistice". The bill passed and Remembrance Day was conducted on November 11, 1931. Thanksgiving Day was moved to October 12 that year. The dead of World War II and Korea, and of all other wars are also remembered on this day. In Britain, Canada and much of the Commonwealth, and in France, Belgium and other parts of Europe, it is observed with a two minutes silence at 11:00 AM. The poppy is the symbol that individuals use to show that they remember those who were killed in the wars and peace keeping operations that Canada has been involved in. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to raise money for needy veterans. The tradition of wearing poppies in honor of Canada's war dead takes its origin from the poem "In Flanders Fields," written in 1915 by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. John McCrae was a Canadian Medical Officer during the First World War. His poem reflects his first hand account of what he witnessed while working from a dressing station on the bank of the Yser Canal.

RESTLESS SPIRITS tells the story of Sechelt's early settlers with humour and compassion. Tickets $12.00 will be on sale Nov 14 at the Seniors' Centre or reserve by calling Louise at 604-885-0706. Performances will be held on Sunday, November 30th at 7pm Saturday, December 6th at 3pm and 7pm Open House The membership committee organized its 5 th annual Open House, which happened on Saturday, September 27. Estimates are that over 150 members and guests participated, and reports are that all enjoyed the event. The refreshments were excellent, and a big vote of thanks goes to Emily and other dedicated volunteers! The door prizes were appreciated and the committee would like to express their appreciation to all the activity groups that participated and provided the wonderful displays and demonstrations. You made the community feel welcome, and guests came away with a much greater appreciation for our Centre. The hard working ladies at the Membership Table signed up 60 people, 32 of whom are new members.
