About us Explore the North is owned by the Swedish couple Johan & Sara. The company is located in Kangos, a small village 150 km north of the Arctic Circle, where Johan grew up. Pine tree forests, lakes and rivers make this landscape a wild and beautiful place. In the summer you can enjoy the midnight sun, in fall the great colours in nature and in the wintertime the magical northern lights. If you want to experience a real adventure out in the wilderness this is the place for you! We arrange different kinds of activities in summer and winter. Accommodation Double Rooms 17 double rooms with ensuite facilities. Simple and comfortable, all with their own toilet and shower. Northern Light Apartment 1 northern light apartment, 4-6 persons, 2 double bedrooms with windows facing north, perfect for viewing the famous northern lights or the midnight sun. The apartment is also equipped with a lounge room, sofa bed and a spacious bathroom with toilet and shower. Wilderness Cabin Wilderness cabin 6-12 people, shared facilities. We use the cabin Repolanto on our overnight adventure tours. It is a traditional fishing & hunting cabin. No electricity or running water, with a fire place to heat the cabin, an outdoor toilet and a wood heated sauna. The cabin is in a beautiful location next to the Lainio river, and is perfect for those who want to spend some time in the peace of the wild. General Info Pinetree Lodge Restaurant & lounge In the Pinetree Lodge you can enjoy a drink in our lounge bar and then sit down in our restaurant for a good meal made from locally produced food from Lapland. Reservations are not needed. > Breakfast (buffet) - 08h00-10h00 > Lunch - 12h00-14h00 Lunch is included in all full-day guided activities. It is also possible to make a sandwich in the morning if you want to go out for a day on your own. > Dinner (plate service + à la carte) - 18h00-21h00 Every night there will be a 2-course menu, but it is also possible to order à la carte. Sauna We have an electric sauna and relax area at the Pinetree Lodge, which is free for all guests. It will be open daily in the afternoon. Free of charge. Just by the lake we have a traditional wood heated sauna and a Jacuzzi for total relaxation. This facility requires special booking per 1,5 hour and includes some drinks and snacks. 1-25 people. Brown Bear Bar In our cosy Brown Bear Bar you can enjoy a cold beer or a cloudberry cocktail in the evening. Internet Wifi is available on the whole facility, free to use for all the guests. Parking Free private parking is possible on site. We also have 3 parking places available for campers. Transfers We arrange transfers to and from the airport of Kiruna. We charge 1500 SEK one-way. Summer Activities There is plenty to see and do at Explore the North. Summer in Lapland is very special because of the midnight sun with 24 hours of daylight. These long days give you the opportunity to make the most out of your holiday! Away from the cities you can experience unspoiled nature! Hiking, rowing, swimming, and the opportunity to experience nature. Whatever you choose, you will be constantly aware of the clean air and the silence. And with a bit of luck you might meet rare birds, reindeer, moose, beavers or other wildlife. How to fill in your days: Hiking There are some great, well-marked hiking trails from the lodge and many more possibilities to just stroll through the forests on your own. There are also beautiful nature reserves in the area that you can visit, we are happy to advise you where to go! Fishing There are plenty of fish in the lakes around the lodge: arctic char, brown trout, rainbow trout and perch. In the river you find, among others; Baltic salmon, grayling and brown trout. Fishing rods can be hired for a small fee (100 SEK for 4 hours) and rowing boats are free to use. Swimming The summers can be hot out here (really!), and what is nicer than taking a dip in one of the many lakes in northern Sweden? Biking We have old but functional bikes available free of charge. If you would prefer biking in the forest and on our trails you can rent a high quality fat bike. Picking berries Depending on the time of the year there are many blueberries, cloudberries or lingonberries to be picked. We are happy to show you which berries are which. Sauna Relax your muscles in the sauna and/or Jacuzzi. The sauna in the lodge is open daily and free to use for all our guests. The traditional wood heated sauna and Jacuzzi is a great Swedish experience and requires special booking. Guided activities We offer guided activities. Guided Summer & Fall Activities Husky kennel guided tour > ½ hour We take you into the kennel where you can meet our 180 huskies, including our puppies. In this time of the year the dogs have a holiday and relax most of the time, combined with running through the woods and swimming in the lakes. We explain to you how we take care of so many dogs, how we train them for winter and everything else you are interested in concerning our sled dogs. Husky day with hike > 3-4 hours Here you get a chance to get to know our dogs and guides better. We take a few dogs out for a walk in the forest. You can enjoy meeting them and seeing them running free in nature and you will begin to understand our pack! Halfway we will make a fire with coffee and lunch. During the whole trip we will tell you everything you want to know about our beloved sled dogs and the nature around us! Note > Our huskies are all very friendly. They adore us humans and all they want is to be cuddled. We know our dogs really well and are happy to help you in and around our kennel so you really see the best of our dogs! Day hike in Nature reserve > 5 hours After breakfast we take you to the Naakajärvi nature reserve, a beautiful Eco park where you can admire deep canyons with dramatic hillsides, unspoiled forests, vast marshes, bubbling forest streams and lakes rich in fish. The pine forests around Manalainen with their nearly 500-year old pine trees are classified as one of Europe s most protected areas. We will have a nice hike through this area, following hiking paths or just our compass. Your guide will tell you everything you want to know about the flora and fauna of the area. Of course we prepare our lunch over a campfire. Evening Midnight Sun Hike > 3-4 hours After dinner we will depart by car for a 40 min drive to a nature reserve with some mountains. Here we follow a trail through different landscapes, pinetree forest, birch trees, swamps and marshlands. After a 50 min hike we will be on a high point where we enjoy an evening snack an a marvelous view. This tour requires good physical condition. Pinetree Lodge > Guided Summer & Fall Activities 08/20
Guided Summer & Fall Activities River day tour > 5 hours We will start this rafting tour north of Kangos on the Lainio river. The river runs mostly through completely uninhabited areas so we can enjoy unspoiled nature! We will follow the river down for several hours and have lunch on a beautiful sandy beach. At the end we will be picked up by minibus and go back to the lodge. Note > Don t confuse this trip with white-water rafting. We love to experience the tranquillity of nature and don t get a kick out of speed and danger, so everyone can join on this trip! River tour with overnight in wilderness cabin > 2 days After packing our things for this 2-day trip we drive north of Kangos where we will start the tour on the Lainio river. This river is one of the oldest in Northern Scandinavia and famous for its great fishing! We enjoy unspoiled nature and paddle along sandy beaches, beautiful forests and canyons with vertical cliffs on each side. We will follow the river down and have lunch on the shore. In the afternoon we will get to Repolanto, our beautiful wilderness cabin. Enjoy the well-deserved traditional sauna and a dinner prepared over the fire. After breakfast the following day we will continue our raft trip south until we will be picked up and go back to the lodge where we will arrive approx. 13h00. Note > Don t confuse this trip with white-water rafting. We love to experience the tranquillity of nature and don t get a kick out of speed and danger, so everyone can join on this trip! Fishing with instructions > 1 hour We ll take the fishing rods and try our luck on the lakes around the Pinetree Lodge. These waters are full of arctic char, brown trout, rainbow trout and perch. Your guide explains you how to fish and everything else you d like to know about fishing. Our chef will help you to prepare the fish you catch. Quad tour > 1 hour Take a nice driving tour in our ATV quad bikes, 2 seats with seatbelts and a safety cage around you. 2 persons per quad. We ll drive a nice nature trail with great surroundings. The guide will lead the way through the adventure and if you are lucky we will see some wildlife. Mountain bike tour > 1 hour A guided mountainbike tour with our fatbikes is a great way to watch the nature of the area. Accommodation Aurora Mountain Lodge The main lodge is situated in Lannavaara, close to the mountains of Lapland. A great pristine wilderness with strong sapmi culture. In summer 2016 we renovated the lodge and cabins to make the standard higher on the resort and lodge. The managers on site are a Swizz couple, Katarina and Sandro, with long experience in tourism. Our main guide, Viktor Clarmo, from Pinetree Lodge, now works at Aurora Moutain Lodge to make sure all guests get the Explore quality. Double Rooms 6 double rooms with a double bed and seating area. Day hike on Kuormakka mountains > 6 hours After breakfast we will drive a bit closer to the starting point of our hike at the foot of the mountain. We will climb up through dense forest until we reach the first peak, where no tree keeps away the fantastic view. We hike towards Lannavaara on top of and over all three peaks of Kuormakka mountain. Lunch we will have on the highest point, while enjoying the stunning views. Your guide will tell you everything you want to know about the flora and fauna of the area. This tour requires good physical condition. Evening hike under the midnight sun > 4 hours After dinner we will start a nice hike on the famous Pilgrims trail. Through old forest, along idyllic lakes and through swamps we will reach Nunasvaara mountain. A great view over the area and the village awaits us at the top. We enjoy an evening snack at the fire place. Horseback riding tour > 2-3 hours Experience an unforgettable time out in nature with our horses. After an instruction to the style of Western riding you will get to know your companion. Both beginners and experienced riders are welcome to join this hack out. Through forest and along swamps we then return back and ride through the village. If you d rather start off with a short ride, we can offer you a one hour tour with the horses as well. Guided Summer & Fall Activities Horseback riding adventure > 5-6 hours We saddle the horses and get ready for a day out in the wilderness. We travel like real horsemen and will have lunch at the camp fire. Both beginners and experienced riders are welcome. Our horses are ridden in Western style, which makes travelling really comfortable. Enjoy the forest we ride through, marshland around you and the fantastic views from another perspective high up your new friend s back. Canoe day tour > 4-5 hours We will start this canoe tour in the neighbour village Soppero on the Lainio river. The river runs mostly through completely uninhabited areas so we can enjoy unspoiled nature! We will follow the river down for several hours and have lunch on a beautiful sandy beach. Our tour ends at Kristallen, from where we walk a few hundred meters back to the lodge. Quad tour > 5 hours An exciting tour with the four wheeler will take you motorized through this variety of landscapes. Through creeks, forest and over swamps we will reach Kuormakka järvi, where we enjoy lunch at the beautiful lake. On adventurous trails we drive back to Lannavaara. Culture day > 5 hours Learn more about our village Lannavaara and its history. We will visit the mineral museum at Kristallen and meet the founders. Your guide will tell you all about the unique collection of stones and minerals, about gold panning and the educational centre for gemstones and jewellery making. We continue with a walk through the village to Mangigården. Reindeer herder Yana will give you the chance to experience Sami culture with all your senses taste, smell, listen, feel and see.
