SOMERSET Mendip 2/1142 (C.40.E011) ST 5470 4560 2 PRIEST ROW, WELLS An Archaeological Evaluation at 2 Priest Row, Wells Report No.:222 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 35pp, figs, tabs The archaeological evaluation within a redundant builders yard recovered evidence for medieval occupation on the site from at least the 12th century. Archaeological features included a property boundary ditch dating from the 12th century, as well as medieval cultivation soils. It was suggested that the north side of Wells High Street had encroached upon the original road line. An Archaeological Evaluation Broomhead, R A Shepton Mallet : R. A. Broomhead, 2002, 16pp, pls, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: R. A. Broomhead The desk top study of the area indicated that the proposed development site lay within an area of historic importance. The street has documented evidence of occupation from the early 18th century. The field evaluation identified a substantial late medieval boundary ditch, and remains of buildings known to have stood on the site since the 19th century. Evidence for earlier occupation could not be confirmed. Hollinrake, 2001, 78pp, figs, tabs, refs Re-opening of the quarry required stripping of the overburden within the extension area. As a result a series of truncated pits, some post and stake holes and a linear ditch were identified. The pits appeared to be ritual features, most dating to the Later Neolithic period. Two pits contained deer antlers, worked flint, animal bone, various types of non-local stones and sherds of Neolithic Grooved Ware pottery. The long ditch was also probably prehistoric but remained undated. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: NE, UD 2/1145 (C.40.E040) ST 7793 4780 1

GARSTON LODGE, VICARAGE STREET, FROME An Archaeological Evaluation at Garston Lodge, Vicarage Street, Frome Report No.:249 Hollinrake, C & Hollinrake, N Glastonbury : C. and N. Hollinrake, 2001, 49pp, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological excavation within a waste plot recovered a possible prehistoric pottery sherd and recorded medieval deposits and features. Large quantities of medieval coarseware pottery sherds indicated that the site was occupied between the 11th and 14th centuries, and then from the 17th or 18th century onwards. Archaeological Evaluation and Earthwork Survey Report No.:48977.02 Chadwick, A Salisbury : Wessex Archaeology, 2001, 22pp, figs, pls, refs Work undertaken by: Wessex Archaeology The field evaluation of the site proposed for a community hospital consisted of five machine excavated trenches. Although two possible medieval enclosures were identified close to the site, no below-ground archaeological remains were identified. Only a few post-medieval and early modern finds were recovered from the topsoil. However, during the course of the evaluation, above ground earthworks were identified, including possible ridge and furrow. Hollinrake, 2001, 41pp, figs, tabs An archaeological evaluation situated between Somerset House on Magdalene Street and Safeways supermarket recorded evidence for Roman occupation of the area and for intensive medieval settlement between the 12th and 14th centuries. The area was adjacent to the medieval deer park and items of cut antler waste were recorded. A permanently boggy area of ground situated east of the south-east corner of the cloister and south of the Chapter house prompted archaeological investigation of the area. The evaluation trench revealed a substantial wall footing, possibly the north wall of the dormitory, and a stone well or water tank. A modern drainage pipe was also uncovered. Evidence from the trenches indicated that these Romano-British buildings were situated on a previous Late Iron Age occupation site: in this connection, it was noted that the area is known locally as Blacklands. Little pottery or other datable material was found in the buildings. The occupation evidence suggested the building increased in size and grandeur but was abandoned sometime in the fourth century. Report No.:ASI 3185 Moffat, B Warminster : ASI Heritage Consultants, 2001, 17pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: ASI Heritage Consultants The evaluation site revealed largely natural soils and deposits, including a shallow palaeochannel. Small amounts of heavily abraded artefactual material, a single sherd of Romano-British Black Burnished Ware pottery and individual fragments of ceramic building material were recovered. These were considered to have been transported alluvially from deposits distant from the site. Hollinrake, 2001, 63pp, figs, tabs An archaeological evaluation undertaken within an old orchard revealed features dating from the Neolithic/Bronze Age, Iron Age, medieval and post-medieval periods. The earlier features included a circular pit and a shallow scoop or gully. The Iron Age features comprised a series of narrow ditches or gullies and possibly a large ditch. Medieval pottery sherds within deposits and features suggested that occupation on the site had commenced by at least the 12th century and continued through the medieval period. A substantial possible late medieval stone building foundation was recorded. This building appeared to have been robbed or dismantled after its demise in the mid 18th century. The site remained unoccupied from that date until the present day. Result of Measured Earthwork Survey Report No.:4501/1/0 Corney, M & Valentin, J Hindon : AC archaeology, 2001, 3pp, figs The area was recorded by total station and by photographs. The site comprised two strip lynchets following the contours of a north facing slope. At the west end the terminals were marked by a narrow but very pronounced ditch running north-south. This had traces of a slight bank on either side and was clearly a major boundary feature. The strip lynchets were assumed to have generally been of post- Roman origin. Work undertaken by: Peter Leach Archaeological Consultant Despite the proximity of the site to the core of the medieval village of Curry Rivel, there was little evidence for activity or occupation here. A few small worn sherds of coarse medieval pottery were recovered. However, it seemed likely that this low lying and possibly ill drained locality may have discouraged human occupation on this particular site. Hollinrake, 2001, 50pp, figs, tabs The archaeological excavation of a natural palaeochannel and the investigation of a series of artificial ditches cut through this palaeochannel recovered pottery sherds and animal bone fragments. The pottery sherds indicated that the environments of the palaeochannel were being exploited from at least the Middle Iron Age and that by the end of the Iron Age the channel had silted-up and new drainage ditches were being dug through the surface of the channel. A second smaller excavation to the southwest recorded areas of burnt clays and an undated ditch or gully, all probably dating to the prehistoric period. An archaeological evaluation undertaken within the yard of Northover Manor Hotel recovered finds and features of the Romano-British and medieval periods including 1st century Durotrigian pottery sherds and a coin of Vespasian. A Romano-British west-east oriented infant burial marked by a small headstone was also recovered, but not unduly disturbed. The report made the suggestion that this area of Northover, in the vicinity of St. Andrew's church, might have been the location of the earliest Roman settlement at Ilchester. This was focused upon the possible early fort site, visible as crop marks in Kings Hams, some 200m south-east of the church. It seemed clear that the church had been used for burial over a long period of time and was consequently very full. Archaeological Evaluation 10

Norton, A Oxford : Oxford Archaeology, 2002, 16pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Oxford Archaeology An archaeological evaluation, comprising the excavation of six trial trenches, was undertaken in advance of a proposed housing development. The evaluation revealed a ditch which was probably medieval, and two non-archaeological features. No other archaeological remains were seen, although the south-western part of the site appeared to have been landscaped in the late part of the 20th century. An Archaeological Evaluation Leach, P Shepton Mallet : Peter Leach Archaeological Consultant, 2001, 8pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Peter Leach Archaeological Consultant The archaeological evaluation identified small slate fragments, charcoal and clay pipe stems that indicated 18th and 19th century agriculture. This material may well have originated from domestic refuse from the nearby town, spread over the fields to increase the fertility. A shallow linear feature encountered probably represented a field boundary. Material recovered from the subsoil deposits were the earliest datable evidence for human activity. No other features or deposits of archaeological significance were seen. Terracing and levelling, or the erection of buildings within the farmyard, would most probably have destroyed the bulk of any other archaeological evidence. The locality of the site was therefore likely to have been outside the boundary of occupation related to the medieval village of Combe Florey. Archive and Summary Report Report No.:01.19 Higbee, L Exeter : Exeter Archaeology, 2001, 104pp, pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Exeter Archaeology The archaeological excavation identified the earliest phase of activity on the site. This was represented by the construction of the borough defences in the 12th century. The town ditch appeared to have been 11

re-cut sometime in the 14th/15th century when there was also evidence for a post built structure on the site. By the time of the Civil War the partially infilled ditch was used as a secondary defensive line. Fatalities from the fighting were dumped into the ditch and quickly covered over. Later phases of activity included the burial of a horse in the 16th/17th century, a pit, post-holes and gullies dating to the 17th to 19th centuries. This overlay the natural ground and backfilled a possible linear feature or pit cut into the subsoil. The levelling may have removed evidence for activity during the post-medieval period. Hollinrake, 2001, 26pp, figs, tabs, refs The archaeological evaluation recorded a number of small gullies or ditches and a scoop containing burnt stone, charcoal and flint. The only finds were prehistoric flint flakes, and these features were assumed to date to either the Bronze Age or the Neolithic period. A radiocarbon assessment of charcoal from the scoop was sent for analysis. The work was undertaken in order to repair and consolidate the subsiding driveway. The presence of a stone retaining wall of possibly two phase construction was recorded. Modern timber and concrete revetments were also investigated. No archaeological finds were recovered that could assist the dating of the stone revetment. No deposits exposed could be demonstrated to be of medieval or earlier date. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: UD 13
