As a result a series of truncated pits, some post and stake holes and a linear ditch were identified. The pits appeared to be ritual features, most dating to the Later Neolithic period. Two pits contained deer antlers, worked flint, animal bone, various types of non-local stones and sherds of Neolithic Grooved Ware pottery. Little pottery or other datable material was found in the buildings. The occupation evidence suggested the building increased in size and grandeur but was abandoned sometime in the fourth century. Medieval pottery sherds within deposits and features suggested that occupation on the site had commenced by at least the 12th century and continued through the medieval period. A substantial possible late medieval stone building foundation was recorded. This building appeared to have been robbed or dismantled after its demise in the mid 18th century. The pottery sherds indicated that the environments of the palaeochannel were being exploited from at least the Middle Iron Age and that by the end of the Iron Age the channel had silted-up and new drainage ditches were being dug through the surface of the channel. A second smaller excavation to the southwest recorded areas of burnt clays and an undated ditch or gully, all probably dating to the prehistoric period. An archaeological evaluation undertaken within the yard of Northover Manor Hotel recovered finds and features of the Romano-British and medieval periods including 1st century Durotrigian pottery sherds and a coin of Vespasian. A Romano-British west-east oriented infant burial marked by a small headstone was also recovered, but not unduly disturbed. The report made the suggestion that this area of Northover, in the vicinity of St. Andrew's church, might have been the location of the earliest Roman settlement at Ilchester. This was focused upon the possible early fort site, visible as crop marks in Kings Hams, some 200m south-east of the church. Although the site was situated close to the presumed centre of the medieval settlement of Yeovilton, the extent and nature of the features located suggest peripheral rather than intense activity. In addition, deep soils sealed a small linear feature and a shallow pit containing animal bone fragments and medieval pottery. These features and deposits were indicative of activity on the possible periphery of an early settlement. Terracing and levelling, or the erection of buildings within the farmyard, would most probably have destroyed the bulk of any other archaeological evidence. The locality of the site was therefore likely to have been outside the boundary of occupation related to the medieval village of Combe Florey. This was represented by the construction of the borough defences in the 12th century. The town ditch appeared to have been 11
re-cut sometime in the 14th/15th century when there was also evidence for a post built structure on the site. By the time of the Civil War the partially infilled ditch was used as a secondary defensive line. Fatalities from the fighting were dumped into the ditch and quickly covered over. Later phases of activity included the burial of a horse in the 16th/17th century, a pit, post-holes and gullies dating to the 17th to 19th centuries. This overlay the natural ground and backfilled a possible linear feature or pit cut into the subsoil. The levelling may have removed evidence for activity during the post-medieval period. Hollinrake, 2001, 26pp, figs, tabs, refs The archaeological evaluation recorded a number of small gullies or ditches and a scoop containing burnt stone, charcoal and flint. The only finds were prehistoric flint flakes, and these features were assumed to date to either the Bronze Age or the Neolithic period. A radiocarbon assessment of charcoal from the scoop was sent for analysis. [Au(abr)] West Somerset 2/1186 (C.40.E035) ST 9920 4290 DUNSTER CASTLE Archaeological Investigation on the Driveway of Dunster Castle, Somerset Report No.:4601/10 Adam, N & Cox, P Hindon : AC archaeology, 2001, 7pp, figs, tabs An archaeological investigation was undertaken on the driveway to Dunster Castle in conjunction with geotechnical investigations. The work was undertaken in order to repair and consolidate the subsiding driveway. The presence of a stone retaining wall of possibly two phase construction was recorded. Modern timber and concrete revetments were also investigated. No archaeological finds were recovered that could assist the dating of the stone revetment.
