Earth Treasure Vase Pilgrimage to Australia June 12-25, 2013 / $6500 Participate in a journey of a lifetime to place an Earth Treasure Vase in the ancient land of Australia. Visit sacred sites, share intimate time with Aboriginal elders and receive teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Pilgrimage is a call to the heart. Pilgrimage is a way of bearing witness and pilgrimage is a way of acting on behalf of the future. Deena Metzger SACRED ACTIVISM This is the final pilgrimage of the Earth Treasure Vase Global Healing Project that began 23 years ago. With this journey, we will fulfill our commitment to accomplish this profound practice of sacred activism and bring blessings to the world in these times of great change. Through our concentrated prayers, meditations and ceremonies at sacred sites travelling the songlines of this ancient land, we will activate a global mandala imbued with our collective intention for the healing, protection and renewal of the Earth. OUR JOURNEY This cross-cultural journey begins in Sydney where we will receive teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We will then travel to Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta, where we will spend intimate time with Aboriginal elders, including the much beloved Australian, Uncle Bob Randall, who holds the true and sacred teachings of this most ancient culture. Finally, we travel to Kakadu National Park in Australia s Northern Territory, a world heritage area and the largest national park in Australia covering 20,000 square kilometres. It is a place of exquisite natural beauty and great cultural significance, with ancient rock art, Aboriginal sacred sites and ceremonial sites. It is here we will celebrate the solstice and bury the Earth Treasure Vase on the full moon. This pilgrimage will bring us new understanding from the ancient Tibetan Buddhist tradition s core teachings on Bodhicitta (the heart and mind of enlightenment) directly from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and then, from Uncle Bob Randall, custodial elder of 1

Uluru, who will share teachings from a sixty thousand year old tradition that has much to offer about living in harmony and awareness in relation to each other and the Earth. This direct experience of learning and being on the land with wisdom holders from traditions that have been kept alive on the planet for countless centuries will deeply inform our understanding of the web of life and guide our way forward as we complete this final chapter of the Earth Treasure Vase Global Healing Mandala. ITINERARY (Included meals: B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner) DAY 1, 12 June: Arrive Sydney, Australia Arrive in Sydney and transfer to our hotel in the heart of the city beside the venue where His Holiness 14 th Dalai Lama will be teaching. (B) DAY 6, 17 June: Fly to Uluru We take a morning flight to Uluru where we will be met by our Anangu friends and taken to a semi permanent camp on their traditional land near the sacred site of Uluru. This bush camp will be our home for the next three days whilst we sit with Tjilpi Elder Bob Randall and his family learning Kanyini (Aboriginal Wisdom), sacred dance and bush tucker collecting. We will share the ETV in ceremony with Uncle Bob and offer the vase to receive the blessings and sacred energies of Uluru and Kata Tjuta during our time here. (B) (L) (D) 3

Uluru Uluru & the Aboriginal Teachings of Kanyini Kanyini is the principle of connectedness through caring and responsibility that underpins aboriginal life. Kanyini means to love and care for your family and things around you as Mother Earth loves you. This unconditional love has no borders, no boundaries. Uncle Bob Randall The sacred site of Uluru at the heart of the continent was originally cared for by Uncle Bob Randall and his family - the indigenous Anangu people of the Yankyunjatjara Nation, who have always belonged to Uluru. At the invitation of Uncle Bob, custodial elder of Uluru, we will join him and his extended family in dedication to the Kanyini principle caring for the land and all of life with unconditional love and responsibility. They say, No one owns land because the land owns us. It is our Mother. In 1985, the Australian government took the land around Uluru away from the traditional owners to create a national park. Uncle Bob and his people live in a reservation inside the park boundaries accessible only by passing through a gate controlled by park rangers. This community of Mutitjulu is within the National Park but not part of the National Park tourist experience. This is where we will stay and spend time learning when we are not walking in the bush around Uluru. Tjilpi Elder Bob Randall DAY 7, 18 June: Uluru As well as activities in camp with our Anangu family we will tour Uluru with Anangu guides soaking up the blessings and learning the dreamtime stories of this land. (B) (L) (D) DAY 8, 19 June: Kata Tjuta Drive to Kata Tjuta for a full day tour with Anangu guides at this exquisite sacred place. 4

Kata Tjuta, an important ceremonial and initiatory site still used today, is a group of 36 large domed sandstone rock formations, with beautiful walking tracks through this mystical place. (B) (L) (D) Kata Tjuta DAY 9, 20 June: Fly Uluru to Darwin Today we enjoy a scenic flight to Alice Springs and on to Australia s top end arriving in Darwin for a restful evening at our Darwin hotel, with time to enjoy the eclectic flavour of this tropical town. Evening film screening (yet to be confirmed) of Our Generation, about the trials of Indigenous people in Australia today, with particular emphasis on people from the top end of Australia who have managed to maintain their traditional ways, with a lecture from a Darwin University Professor, who appeared in the film. (B) DAY 10, 21 June: Kakadu - SOLSTICE Today we drive for about 3 hours to the spectacular Kakadu National Park, a world heritage area and the largest national park in Australia covering 20,000 square kilometres. It is a place of exquisite natural beauty and great cultural significance, with ancient rock art, Aboriginal sacred sites and ceremonial sites. The point of the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere will be 2:34 PM, which we will celebrate in ceremony with the Earth Treasure Vase. Whilst in Kakadu we will travel in a convoy of 4WD vehicles, camping in beautiful natural places, sleeping in swags (bedrolls) and feasting from our camp kitchen. (B) (L) (D) Kakadu National Park 5

(B) (L) (D) Rock Art Kakadu National Park DAY 12, 23 June: Kakadu - FULL MOON With today s full moon, we complete the purpose of our journey by making our final ceremony to plant the Earth Treasure Vase entrusted into Cynthia s care in the sacred land of Australia as a cause to bring benefit to countless beings and blessings to the Earth. PILGRIMAGE GUIDES Cynthia Jurs is a Buddhist teacher of who received Dharmacharya transmission from Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in 1994. Also a practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, she has studied with many great teachers and has spent much time in retreat practicing in both the Vajrayana and Zen Buddhist traditions for the last 30 years. In 1990 she made a pilgrimage to meet the hermit and meditation master, HE Kushok Mangden (Charok Rinpoche), a 106-year-old lama living in a cave in Nepal, from whom she received the practice of the earth treasure vases; a practice dedicated to bringing healing and protection to the Earth. For over twenty years she has been carrying out this practice, travelling to places in need, making relations with indigenous elders and young activists, and founding the Earth Treasure Vase Global Healing Project. Cynthia brings an unwavering commitment and palpable transmission of the practice of the ETVs to participants, activists and indigenous communities in a non-denominational spirit of ceremony with a heartfelt intention of bringing healing and protection to our planet. She is the President of Alliance for the Earth and directs the Open Way Sangha in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Tjilpi Elder - Uncle Bob Randall is one of Australia s much loved and respected elders bridging the divide between Aboriginal wisdom and the Western world eager to learn from the ways of Wisdom. Uncle Bob was born on the land near Uluru but as one of the stolen generation, he was taken from his family as a young boy and brought up in mission schools. Bob stayed close to his Aboriginal roots and became a community leader in Darwin before returning to his native Anangu land around Uluru. Bob is famous in Australia for his song Brown Skin Baby which became the anthem of Civil Rights in Australia and for his autobiography Songman and the documentary Kanyini. Bob travels extensively through Australia and overseas teaching Kanyini (Aborignal wisdom) to all who have an open heart to hear. Bob s home is at the foot of Uluru where he greets the morning light each dawn. Jeremy Ball is the Director of Transformational Tours. In 1998 he found himself crying under a Buddha statue whilst on a business trip to Hong Kong, his life, materially successful yet emotionally and spiritually bankrupt. He took a 2-week holiday to get it back together, and made a beeline for Kathmandu, Nepal where he found Tibetan Buddhism. Not long after, he quit his job to range through the Himalayas and sit at the Lamas feet. Whilst attending the Kalachakra in Bodhgaya in 2001 a still quiet voice told him his future was to assist other pilgrims to connect with the heart of Mother Earth and since then Jeremy has travelled all over the world visiting sacred sites and working with indigenous elders and wisdom keepers; most of all Australian Elders and Tibetan Buddhist Masters. Jeremy says, It is my great honour to serve each of you and this incredible project. Australia is honoured to host Cynthia and receive the blessings contained within the Earth Treasure Vase. Om Ah Hung So Ha. Belonging to all things was and is our way of life, as an aboriginal person. There are many lines of relationship that connect us. One of these is the connection to country based on totemic songlines from the Dreaming. A totem links the spiritual and physical through the land. These dreaming trails, the songlines, crisscross Australia in every direction. The Dreaming creatures moved across the country, creating the topography of the land we see today. These Dreaming songlines connect everyone into one family. As an aboriginal person, you belong to every spiritual entity that lives with you in your country you belong to anything that s living and it belongs to you. It s the livingness the beingness that connects us. That livingness is what we share and what is the same in all of us. We are all one, from the most minute grain of sand to the largest mountain. And just as a crystal reflects the colors of the rainbow, if we could be held up to a powerful light, we too would reflect the light as a rainbow. It s as simple as that. Every one of us carries that energy and the beauty of the rainbow within us. That is the innermost perfection of uniqueness that each of us carries. There is not another being like you in the whole of creation. You have that beauty of the rainbow in you. In my culture, this understanding is expressed in the story of the Rainbow Serpent. - Uncle Bob Randall 8
