THE IELLEN SERVICE REGION 1.0 OVERVIEW OF THE IELLEN SERVICE REGION The Inner Eastern Local Learning and Employment Network (IELLEN) is comprised of three Local Government Areas the Cities of Boroondara, Port Phillip and Stonnington. These Cities are located in the inner eastern, southern and south-eastern suburbs of Greater Melbourne. Distances from the Melbourne CBD range between 2 and 15 kilometres. The population of the IELLEN region is 397,525 (2016 ABS estimated resident population), and covers an area of 107 square kilometres. Within the IELLEN region, Port Phillip has the highest population density (52.7 persons per hectare), followed by Stonnington (43.5 persons per hectare). The strongest population growth in the IELLEN region occurred in Stonnington, with a 12.9% increase since 2011, just below that of Greater Melbourne at 13.3%. The lowest population growth since 2011 was in Boroondara at 6.2%. The largest LGA in the IELLEN region is Boroondara, both in population size (177,361) and geographic area (60 square kilometres). 1.1 THE CITIES OF BOROONDARA, PORT PHILLIP AND STONNINGTON 1.1.1 BOROONDARA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA An inner eastern suburb of Melbourne, the City of Boroondara is located between five and ten kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD, and is a predominantly residential area with some commercial and educational land use. The commercial areas include the Burke Road shopping strip (Camberwell Junction), the Glenferrie Road shopping area (Hawthorn), and the High Street retail area (Kew). Education facilities include Swinburne University of Technology (Hawthorn Campus), University of Melbourne (Hawthorn Campus) and private schools. Studley Park, Yarra Bend Park, the Outer Circle Trail, and the Yarra River are major parklands within the City. The City of Boroondara is served by the Eastern Freeway, Citylink, the Lilydale-Belgrave and Alamein railway lines, and a number of tramlines. Boroondara is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "where the ground is thickly shaded". The original inhabitants of the Boroondara area were the Wurundjeri Aboriginal people. Part 1. 1.1.2 PORT PHILLIP LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA The City of Port Phillip is an inner southern suburb of Melbourne, from two to eight kilometres from the Melbourne GPO. Albert Park is in the centre of the City, while the southern and eastern areas are mostly residential. The northern and western areas are characterised by substantial industrial and office land use, and commercial areas that include shopping and lifestyle strips along main roads, such as Bay Street (Port Melbourne) and Clarendon Street (South Melbourne). Other shopping precincts/retail areas are Carlisle Street (Balaclava), Fitzroy and Acland Streets, St Kilda Road (St Kilda), and the Esplanade Market and South Melbourne Market. The City contains many parks, gardens, and the various beaches of the Port Phillip Bay foreshore. Notable of these are the Catani Gardens, St Kilda Botanical Gardens and St Vincent Gardens. Sporting and recreation facilities include Albert Park, Albert Park Lake, Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre, Lakeside Stadium (Bob Jane Stadium), Luna Park, St Kilda Pier, Station Pier, St Kilda- Williamstown Ferry, Gasworks Art Park, St Kilda Sea Baths, Palais Theatre, and the Jewish Museum of Australia. The City of Port Phillip is served by several tram lines, the St Kilda and Port Melbourne light rail lines, and the Sandringham railway line. The original inhabitants of the Port Phillip area were the Bunurong or Kulin Aboriginal people. Part 1. IELLEN Region 4

1.1.3 STONNINGTON LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA The City of Stonnington is located in Melbourne's inner south-eastern suburbs, situated between Boroondara and Stonnington, and is about three to thirteen kilometres from the Melbourne GPO. It is named after a historically significant mansion in the area, which was named after Stonington in Connecticut, USA. The City of Stonnington is a residential and commercial area with some industrial, office and institutional land use. The City includes some of Melbourne's most prestigious residential localities. Commercial areas include the shopping precincts/retail areas of Chapel Street, Glenferrie Road, Greville Street, High Street, Malvern Road and Toorak Road, Chadstone Shopping Centre, and Prahran Market. Education facilities include Holmesglen Institute of TAFE (Chadstone Campus), Melbourne Polytechnic and many private schools. Other major features include Cabrini Hospital, Malvern Valley Golf Club, Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Centre, Chapel off Chapel (arts venue), Como House, Central Park, Hedgeley Dene Gardens, and Urban Forest Reserve. The City of Stonnington is serviced by the Monash Freeway, Princes Highway, Punt Road, the Glen Waverley, Frankston/Stony Point, Pakenham/Cranbourne and Sandringham train lines, and a number of tram lines. The industry that employs the most people in FTE* jobs in the IELLEN region is: Professional, Scientific and Technical Services, a high 18.1%, compared to 8.9% in Victoria.
