Contents Your Handy City Guide Volume 9 categories Dine & Wine Cravings Health & Wellness Relaxation At Your Service Shops Entertainment Merry-making Dwell Accommodation read more DID YOU KNOW ( Trivia ) SIDETRIPS in Manila THE PHILIPPINES Christmas is probably the most anticipated celebration in almost every country. Even if not all countries are big in observing the Nativity, here in the Philippines, where the world s longest Christmas is celebrated, Yuletide season is a huge merriment that Filipinos from all walks of life look forward to. The final issue of Locale City Guide for the year is all about Christmas! From Luzon, Visayas to Mindanao, Pinoys surely know how to mark this jolly season with a bang! The country s key cities have their own Christmas displays from the simple, traditional ones to the more lavish and spectacular decorations that will really lift up your holiday spirits. A giant Christmas tree here, a display of colorful dancing lights there, with buildings strung with magical lights all these and more that declare the most wonderful time of the year! Moreover, the infectious Christmas charm hangs about on every major thoroughfare in Metro Manila. For example - Roxas Boulevard, amidst heavy traffic, is alive with colorful lights and beautiful installations of parol that enchant the driver on his way home. How can you ignore the twinkling lights in this famed waterfront boulevard? Even the trees in the city are dressed up beautifully with sparkling lights, completing the feeling of utopia this season. It makes us feel love and joy as we celebrate with our loved ones, while looking forward to a brighter year ahead. A happy and wonderful Christmas and a prosperous New Year from Locale, your favorite handy city guide! OUR ROOTS It s the most wonderful time of the year, indeed! And Pinoys like to celebrate Christmas for as long as possible. Radio stations, shopping malls and commercial establishments play Christmas songs and carols that bring a merry mood. Moreover, Christmas is a celebration everyone is looking forward to celebrate. Though the formal Yuletide festivities start on December 16, expect a multitude of Christmas decors everywhere much earlier than that! From the time when the month of September starts, we Filipinos, whether we admit or not, are already planning our Christmas revelry preparations. Philippines Christmas would not be complete without the traditional decorations and the thousands of radiant, sparkling lights that wonderfully adorn the tallest buildings and the humblest of home. Of course, Western traditions have made it to the heart of every Pinoy, thus Christmas trees, Santa Claus, Christmas wreaths and stockings are never absent in holiday decor. And what completes the list of Christmas decors? Of course the parol! This five-pointed star represents the Star of Bethlehem. From the traditional materials of bamboo sticks and rice paper, to the modern, more elaborate materials such as plastic and stained glass, these colorful stars lend their positive appeal to every nook and cranny where they are hung for two months or more. Santa Claus and wreaths are to Westerners, while parols are to Pinoys an iconic and anticipated Christmas symbol that completes our holiday festivities. And these brightly-lit parols, jutting out of the branches of trees that line up the streets of Manila, are constant accessories to Manila s Christmas sights. The big, old trees along Roxas Boulevard seem to stand gracefully with the lovely parols and Christmas lights milled around them. The buildings similarly join the competition as they vie for your attention as if they re silently screaming I m Instagramworthy! Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful, quoted Norman Vincet Peale. I think we all would agree that Christmas is the best time of the year to be in Manila.

Trivia Ang Pasko ay sumapit! The popular Christmas song Ang Pasko ay Sumapit was originally written by Mariano V estil in Cebuano. Entitled Kasadya Ning Taknaa (or How Happy is this Time), Levi Celerio, the renowned musician, translated it into Tagalog. And from then on, Ang Pasko ay Sumapit became the unofficial Filipino Christmas song. Did You Know? The quintessential Christmas decoration in every Filipino household is the colorful parol. It represents the guiding light or star of Bethlehem and sends out a positive vibe of hope to everyone. A popular tradition in the country on Christmas day is children visiting their godparents and elderly to pay respects or to simply do Mano Po, and in return, they are given gifts. There are 8 major languages in the country, and here are some ways to say MERRY CHRISTMAS in local tongues: in Cebuano Maayong Pasko, in Pangasinense or Panggalatok they say Maabig ya Pasko, Malipayon nga Pascua is for Ilonggo; and Maligayang Pasko for the Tagalogs. SANTA CLAUS is called by different names in every country he is called Father Christmas in England, Sheng Dan Lao Ren in China, in France, he is called Pere Noel and Papa Noel in Peru and Brazil, to mention but a few. In the Philippines they just refer to him as Santa Klaus, who is very popular especially in the malls during the Ber months. SIMBANG GABI Misa de Gallo Simbang Gabi is a tradition that existed since the olden times. It is a devotional novena of dawn masses (but nowadays, some churches have Simbang Gabi held early in the evening) and will culminate on the eve of Christmas Day, the last day of Simbang Gabi. This mass service is referred as Misa de Gallo. Malipayon nga Pascua! Maligayang Pasko! Maayong Pasko! Maabigya Pasko! Puto Bumbong Kusina101.com Philippines has the longest Christmas season in the world once the ber months begin, the mood changes into a festive and happy one and lasts until the Feast of the 3 Kings on January 6. dosp.org Simbang Gabi equates with the buying of puto bumbong and bibingka! After attending mass, the rows of makeshift stores selling these native delicacies are crowded upon by churchgoers who will buy these Filipino holiday treats.
