INVESTING IN SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Domingo Ramon C. Enerio, Tourism Committee On the occasion of the Visayan Area Business Conference & Expo Bacolod City, 29 August 02 September 2018 Definition Expressed simply, the United Nations World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as: "Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities" 1

A suitable balance must be established to ensure sustainable tourism: 1) Make optimal use of environmental resources that constitute a key element in tourism development, maintaining essential ecological processes and helping to conserve natural heritage and biodiversity. 2) Respect the socio cultural authenticity of host communities, conserve their built and living cultural heritage and traditional values, and contribute to inter cultural understanding and tolerance. 3) Ensure viable, long term economic operations, providing socioeconomic benefits to all stakeholders that are fairly distributed, including stable employment and income earning opportunities and social services to host communities, and contributing to poverty alleviation. Why Tourism: Tourism is one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world The business volume of tourism equals or even surpasses that of oil exports, food products or automobiles. This global spread of tourism in industrialised and developed states has produced economic and employment benefits in many related sectors from construction to agriculture or telecommunications. International tourist arrivals grew by 4.6 % to 1,184 million (in 2015); international tourism generated US$ 1.5 trillion in export earnings; UNWTO forecasts a growth in international tourist arrivals of between 3.5% and 4.5% (in 2016) By 2030, UNWTO forecasts international tourist arrivals to reach 1.8 billion (UNWTO Tourism Towards 2030) The contribution of tourism to economic well being depends on the quality and the revenues of the tourism offer. 2
