A little bit ABOUT US Welcome to our slice of paradise! We, Johan and Sara, founded Explore the North in 2005 after years of dreaming. When setting out on this journey, we looked no further than Johan s childhood home: Kangos. Towering pine forests, lakes, and rivers make the area around Kangos wild and beautiful. We want to show you what makes our part of Lapland so special and magical. To us, you come as a guest and you leave as a friend. We invite you to visit us and get to know more about Lapland. Join our friendly knowledgeable staff in small tour groups to experience all Sweden s nature has to offer. We want every guest to have a unique trip of a lifetime. Beyond our amazing staff and the breathtaking wilderness, the heart of the company has always been our huskies. We have over 200 dogs working at Explore the North. Currently we have three different lodges to host you: Pinetree Lodge in Särkimukka, Aurora Mountain Lodge in Lannavaara and Arctic River Lodge in Tärendö. Come and explore our ACCOMMODATIONS SÄRKIMUKKA > TÄRENDÖ > LANNAVAARA PINETREE LODGE Särkimukka is a very small village by the Lainio River, 150 km North of the Arctic Circle. The village has 20 times more dogs than people. Join us in the middle of the Taiga forests! Pinetree Lodge is situated beside a beautiful lake, Saarijärvi, in the middle of a rich forest. It has a reception desk, dining room, bar and sauna. Every afternoon we heat up the sauna. After activities you can relax, warm up, and enjoy the beautiful view. Before or after dinner, join us in the Brown Bear Bar for a locally brewed beer or a cloudberry sour. In our restaurant, join us for a delicious meal made from locally sourced food from Lapland. We offer the amenities of a large hotel with the cozy feeling of staying with a friend. ARCTIC RIVER LODGE Artic River Lodge is situated in Tärendö, 80 km north of the Arctic Circle. The Lodge is fully renovated in 2018 and has all the facilities you need to enjoy the best Lapland has to offer. Arctic River Lodge offers a more luxurious yet relaxed environment for those looking for something even more extra out of their vacation. Nice cozy rooms, a relaxed lounge with fireplace and a sauna and relax area inside the building. Next to the hotel we have a newly built husky kennel with 80 dogs. Our two chefs, Audrey and Lowie, welcome you to the restaurant, presenting top quality food made from local ingredients and wine from our own wine cellar. Our guides offers you all kinds of exciting activities that will create lifelong memories. AURORA MOUNTAIN LODGE Lannavaara is a small village by the Lainio River, 200 km North of the Arctic Circle. Only 80 people live in the village year round and reindeer herding is the most common occupation. Aurora Mountain Lodge is located near the mountains of Lapland. With its pristine wilderness, there is a strong tie to the Sami people in the area. On a clear day, you can see the stunning Kuormakka Mountains from the restaurant and lounge! The entire lodge was completely renovated in 2016. This unique location is perfect for those wanting to get away but not wanting to give up the comforts of home. About Us > Accomodations 04/24
General Info > All Lodges Restaurant & Lounge Enjoy a drink in our lounge bar and then sit down in our restaurant for a good meal made from locally produced food from Lapland. Reservations are not needed for overnight guests. > Breakfast (buffet) - 07:00-10:00 > Lunch - 12:00-14:00 Lunch is included in all full-day guided activities. It is also possible to make a sandwich in the morning if you want to go out for a day on your own. > Dinner (plate service + à la carte) - 17:00-21:00 Every night there will be an evening menu, but it is also possible to order à la carte. Sauna All our lodges have an electric sauna and relax area, which is free for all guests. It will be open daily in the afternoon. For total relaxation you can book a jacuzzi. Conference Room 10-60 persons, depending on location. Contact us for more info. Internet Wifi is available on the whole facility, free to use for all the guests. Parking Free private parking is possible on site. Transfers We arrange transfers to and from the airport of Kiruna, once a day. We charge 1500 SEK one-way. In all activity programs transfer is included. It is possible to arrange a transfer to/from other places if required. Prices upon request. Cleaning The rooms are cleaned every second day. If you would like extra cleaning or new towels, please ask. Weather and nature conditions Occasionally weather conditions may be unsuitable or other circumstances may cause changes to the itinerary. We reserve the right to change the program if this should be the case. Accommodation The main lodge is situated just beside a beautiful lake in the middle of the forest. It has a reception, dining room for 80 people, bar, lounge and 10 double rooms upstairs. After activity we always have the hotel sauna heated, there you can relax and enjoy the beautiful view over the lake. Before dinner you can enjoy a drink in our lounge bar and then sit down in our restaurant for a good meal made out of the locally produced food from Lapland. The building next to the main Lodge has 7 double rooms, 1 family room and meeting room for 20-40 people for the special business moment. Here you can also enjoy a cold beer or a cloudberry sour in our cozy Brown Bear Bar. Guest Rooms 17 double rooms, with ensuite facilities, divided over the two main buildings. Simple, but comfortable, all with toilet and shower. Family Room 1 family room, 4-6 persons, situated on the second floor with one lounge room with bed sofa and two double rooms. 1 bathroom with toilet and shower. Both bedrooms have windows straight towards the north. Cabins 3 cabins, 2-4 persons, with en suite facilities, 1 room with double bed and a bed sofa. Inside there is an open fire stove to have a cozy fire in the evening after being out on adventures in Lapland. Perfect hideaway for couples. Arctic Living Houses 6 Arctic Living Houses, 4-6 persons, with en suite facilities, 2 bedrooms with double bed and a living room with bed sofa. Inside there is an open fire stove and a fully equipped kitchen. Bathroom with shower, toilet and sauna. Perfect for 2 couples or a family. Aurora Hideaway Once in a lifetime, sleep in one of our two wooden Aurora Hideaways. Away from the Lodge, but still in walking distance. They are located in a great spot to watch the northern lights, and have 3 glass walls and a glass roof. Wilderness Cabin 6-12 people. (Used at overnight adventure tours). These cabins are traditional fishing & hunting cabins. No running water, outdoor toilet, fire stove to heat the cabin. Shared facilities. Simple, but beautiful! Pinetree Lodge > Accommodation 07/24
Summer & Fall Activities Husky Kennel Guided Tour > Half hour We take you into the kennel where you can meet our 180 huskies, including our puppies. In this time of the year the dogs have a holiday and relax most of the time, combined with running through the woods and swimming in the lakes. We explain to you how we take care of so many dogs, how we train them for winter and everything else you are interested in concerning our sled dogs. Husky Day with Hike > 3-4 hours Here you get a chance to get to know our dogs and guides better. We take a few dogs out for a walk in the forest. You can enjoy meeting them and seeing them running free in nature and you will begin to understand our pack! Halfway we will make a fire with coffee and lunch. During the whole trip we will tell you everything you want to know about our beloved sled dogs and the nature around us! Note > Our huskies are all very friendly. They adore us humans and all they want is to be cuddled. We know our dogs really well and are happy to help you in and around our kennel so you really see the best of our dogs! Day Hike in Nature Reserve > 5 hours After breakfast we take you to the Naakajärvi nature reserve, a beautiful Eco park where you can admire deep canyons with dramatic hillsides, unspoiled forests, vast marshes, bubbling forest streams and lakes rich in fish. The pine forests around Manalainen with their nearly 500-year old pine trees are classified as one of Europe s most protected areas. We will have a nice hike through this area, following hiking paths or just our compass. Your guide will tell you everything you want to know about the flora and fauna of the area. Of course we prepare our lunch over a campfire. Evening Midnight Sun Hike > 3-4 hours After dinner we will depart by car for a 40 min drive to a nature reserve with some mountains. Here we follow a trail through different landscapes, pinetree forest, birch trees, swamps and marshlands. After a 50 min hike we will be on a high point where we enjoy an evening snack an a marvelous view. This tour requires good physical condition. River Day Tour > 5 hours We will start this rafting tour north of Kangos on the Lainio river. The river runs mostly through completely uninhabited areas so we can enjoy unspoiled nature! We will follow the river down for several hours and have lunch on a beautiful sandy beach. At the end we will be picked up by minibus and go back to the lodge. Note > Don t confuse this trip with white-water rafting. We love to experience the tranquillity of nature and don t get a kick out of speed and danger, so everyone can join on this trip! Summer & Fall Activities River Tour with Overnight in Wilderness Cabin > 2 days After packing our things for this 2-day trip we drive north of Kangos where we will start the tour on the Lainio river. This river is one of the oldest in Northern Scandinavia and famous for its great fishing! We enjoy unspoiled nature and paddle along sandy beaches, beautiful forests and canyons with vertical cliffs on each side. We will follow the river down and have lunch on the shore. In the afternoon we will get to Repolanto, our beautiful wilderness cabin. Enjoy the well-deserved traditional sauna and a dinner prepared over the fire. After breakfast the following day we will continue our raft trip south until we will be picked up and go back to the lodge where we will arrive approx. 13:00. Note > Don t confuse this trip with white-water rafting. We love to experience the tranquillity of nature and don t get a kick out of speed and danger, so everyone can join on this trip! Self-guided Hike with Overnight in Camp > 2 days Find your way through the forest with use of a GPS. Your destination is a ready made tent camp with everything you need to prepare dinner and enjoy an overnight in the wild. Brown Bear Watching Spend the night in a hideaway by a feeding place for brown bears. Big chance of seeing one with your own eyes and take photos to bring home as a life long memory. Transfer, sleeping equipment and breakfast included. Fishing with Instructions > 1 hour We ll take the fishing rods and try our luck on the lakes around the Pinetree Lodge. These waters are full of arctic char, brown trout, rainbow trout and perch. Your guide explains you how to fish and everything else you d like to know about fishing. Our chef will help you to prepare the fish you catch. Quad Tour > 1 hour Take a nice driving tour in our ATV quad bikes, 2 seats with seatbelts and a safety cage around you. 2 persons per quad. We ll drive a nice nature trail with great surroundings. The guide will lead the way through the adventure and if you are lucky we will see some wildlife. The lodge is fully renovated in 2018 and has all the facilities you need to enjoy the best Lapland has to offer. Nice cozy rooms, a relaxed lounge with fireplace, sauna and relax area inside the building. The restaurant serves top quality food and wine. Accommodation Katarina & Sandro The managers on site are a Swiss couple, Katarina and Sandro. They have long experience in tourism and hospitality. Katarina continued her education at the hotel management school and worked in various places as a manager. With her flair and sense for special things, a tour with her on a horse or with huskies is always exciting and eventful. She likes you to participate on her knowledge about nature and animals. And maybe she ll give you one of her favorite cake recipes. Sandro has practiced his passion in the kitchen up to his own restaurant. In his free time he loves to drive his bike through the forest, the more technical and unknown it gets the better. As a little boy he learned to ride a horse before he knew how to walk, so he is the perfect partner for your riding trips and as well the ones with the huskies. Accommodation The main lodge is situated in Lannavaara, close to the mountains of Lapland. A great pristine wilderness with strong sapmi culture. In summer 2016 we renovated the lodge and all accommodation. Guest Rooms 6 double rooms with en suite facilities. Simple but comfortable, all with toilet and shower. The rooms are situated in the main building. Cabins 14 Cabins, semi-detached, 2-4 persons, situated on site approx. 100 meters from the main lodge. Day Hike on Kuormakka Mountains > 6 hours After breakfast we will drive a bit closer to the starting point of our hike at the foot of the mountain. We will climb up through dense forest until we reach the first peak, where no tree keeps away the fantastic view. We hike towards Lannavaara on top of and over all three peaks of Kuormakka mountain. Lunch we will have on the highest point, while enjoying the stunning views. Your guide will tell you everything you want to know about the flora and fauna of the area. This tour requires good physical condition. Evening Hike under the Midnight Sun > 4 hours After dinner we will start a nice hike on the famous Pilgrims trail. Through old forest, along idyllic lakes and through swamps we will reach Nunasvaara mountain. A great view over the area and the village awaits us at the top. We enjoy an evening snack at the fire place. Horseback Riding Tour > 2-3 hours Experience an unforgettable time out in nature with our horses. After an instruction to the style of Western riding you will get to know your companion. Both beginners and experienced riders are welcome to join this hack out. Through forest and along swamps we then return back and ride through the village. If you d rather start off with a short ride, we can offer you a one hour tour with the horses as well.
