1. Welcome Dear guests, thanks for choosing to stay with us. We have been running bed and breakfast accommodation in this house since 2003. We would like to confirm to you that we will put maximum efforts to provide you highest standard accommodation here and make your stay enjoyable and pleasant. In doing so, we indeed need your help to look properly after this beautiful, heritage listed home, to preserve it for future generations. 2. Household rules Dear guests, we do have flexible arrangement and are open to accommodate your requirements. Below are basic household rules and if you have any concerns regarding them please do not hesitate to talk with us. a) Check in and check out times Check in: -working days from Monday to Friday after 17:00 -weekends, Saturday, Sunday or public holidays after 14:00 Check out: -before 10:00. b) Breakfast - from 07:00-09:30 We do offer both continental and full breakfast. Please check is breakfast included in your quotation. If breakfast is not included in your quotation we can serve you continental breakfast for additional $10.00 per person per day or full breakfast for additional $15.00 per person per day. 4
c) Smoking policy We do offer non smoking accommodation. d) Kitchen, internet, DVD, books and other facilities Kitchen, on the second floor with all facilities is dedicated for our guest use. Please, have understanding for other guests needs and clean dishes after use. Internet use- we do have wireless internet connection available for our guest with their own computer. You can use our lap top computer for internet search, on limited time frame, in our formal lounge on the ground floor. DVD player and extensive collection of DVDs is available downstairs in the formal lounge. You can also, borrow our lap top computer, for a limited time, and watch DVDs in your room on our lap top computer if you wish. Books our books collection is available for you. Books are not for sale. Some of them are very old and do have a high value for us and we would appreciate your care in handling them. Barbecue our barbecue with all facilities is available for you. Please clean the barbecue after use. 5
Parking we do have three parking spots available. Guests are encouraged to keep their cars on these parking spots instead on Stoke Street. Washing machine and dryer washing machine is located in the kitchen and a dryer in the bathroom opposite the kitchen. Please do not use these facilities after 20:00 due to noise and convenience of other guests. Iron and ironing board are available please talk to us. Hairdryers are available in each bathroom. Electrical blankets and heating All beds do have electrical blankets and all rooms have moveable electrical heaters. From safety reasons please do not forget to switch off electrical blankets or heaters after use. Please do not use electrical heaters or heating globes in bathrooms to dry your clothes. We do have two dryers one upstairs and one downstairs for this purpose. 6

10. History of the house Our house at 29 Stoke Street, originally called Hamlyn was built by Thomas Reibey Atkinson (grandson of Mary Reibey shown on $20.00 note) see the photo below, between 1896 and 1898. The house belongs to the late Queen Anne architecture style with typical feature such us an asymmetrical roof shape, high chimneys, arches above windows, brick works etc. Thomas (1844-1902) was born in Launceston in the house called Illaroo but used to live in Bifrons house, located at 1 High Street, Launceston. His father John Atkinson and mother Jane Penelope Reibey married in 1824, had 11 children. Thomas married Edith Ella Tofft in 1888 and they had four children. The house was in ownership of Reibey Atkinson family until Ella died in 1955. In 1955 the original internal stairs were demolished and house was divided into two separate floors. This created space to build kitchens upstairs and downstairs. The external stairs were added and an extension downstairs containing kitchenette, shower room, toilet and one small bedroom. The block of land was subdivided and a building with four units behind, was added in 1970. The house is listed as a heritage house and is placed on Tasmanian Heritage Council listing under number R2271. Current owners of the house, Sead and Mubera Pasalic purchased house on 29 September 2003 and later converted it to the bed and breakfast accommodation. Meriam bed and breakfast is 2007 Takeabreak winner for the best Tasmanian accommodation in the affordable accommodations category. 14
Mary Reibey (1777-1855) grandmother of Thomas Reibey Atkinson is shown on $20.00 note. Arrived to Australia in 1792 as a convict. Later recognized as one of the most successful business woman in Australia. John Atkinson (1795-1893) Father of Thomas Reibey Atkinson, son in law of Mary Reibey. Jane Penelope Reibey (1807-1854) mother of Thomas Reibey Atkinson. Married to John Atkinson in 1824. Thomas Reibey Atkinson (1844-1902) built this house called Hamlyn in 1896-1898. Edit Ella Tofft (1865-1955), a daughter of major Tofft, married to Thomas in 1888. They had 4 kids. 15

Atkinson NOTE The sitter's mother Mary Reibey, née Haydock (1777-1855) is still remembered today because she features on the Australian $20 note. Born in Lancashire, she was arrested for horse stealing and sent to Australia to serve a seven year sentence. Following her release, she married Thomas Reibey who became a successful shipping magnate and philanthropist. The artist Richard Read Junior was active in Sydney between 1819 and 1849. He was a successful miniature painter and exhibited at the 1849 Exhibition of the Society for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Australia. 16
