Page 1 of 5 WINDERMERE TOWN COUNCIL Wednesday 9 January 2013 at 11am, The Council Chamber, Broad Street, Windermere Minute No Present: Cllr Lisa Greasley (Chair), Adrian Faulkner, Joan Stocker, Allan Winrow, Andy Tallon (Continental Landscapes), Kevin Holmes (VFMS), Sandra Lilley The meeting opened at 11.04am. Apologies: Diane Fisher, Alan Marsh Minutes: The minutes of the meeting held on 6 November 2012 were agreed as a true and accurate record with the exception of the following - Simone Cookson should be amended to read Simone Backhouse. Items arising from the minutes Ray Beckwith not contacted yet as no date for meeting. Men in sheds meeting at The Brookside had been a positive meeting on refurbishment of benches. Local gentlemen willing to put time in and pass on skills to younger generation. Lakes School can offer some limited facilities. Charboat for Ellerthwaite Square - no change of feeling from the Civic Society and they are now withdrawing from the project. Benches - 3 benches have been refurbished and one is now in place on Beresford Road. 2 more are due to be installed shortly. The Clerk has applied for a grant to LDNPA for supporting the refurbishing of 10 more benches. We have been accepted as a contestant for Britain in Bloom again. Lakes Hospitality event has been moved to Grasmere so no free stand this year. As an alternative we will try and get a display in shop windows in Bowness and Windermere. Allan Winrow will approach the estate agents about the empty Pearsons unit in Windermere. Lisa Greasley ad Adrian Faulkner will approach Alan

Fruity Windermere shall be planting at Birthwaite Flats (bottom of Phoenix Way) on 26 January 2012. Steve Tatlock, LDNPA - the Clerk to request a date of meeting in connection with this years' Winderclean - we would like to attend and participate. Saplings - allotment group been asked whether they could plant these on the banking between the allotments and Booths car park. These need planting in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Date and time to agree with allotment holders. Liaise with Kevin Holmes about planting. Dates for community meeting - suggested dates are 19, 20, 21 or 26, 27 or 28 February 2013. Suggestions for attendees are Friends of the Lake District, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Windermere Reflections, Fruity Windermere, TACT, Winter Lights Group, Allotments Group and Simone Backhouse, Police. To be held in The Marchesi Centre (same room as last year and provide refreshments). We shall ask Cartmel if they'd like to participate. Invite Ray Beckwith, RHS. Email flyer advert to community groups and banks. Last years school logos will continue to be used on promotional material. Comments from the judges to be shared and also use event as sponsorship raising. It was suggested we could form a 'Friends of Windermere in Bloom' to raise funds. We will request a Windermere In Bloom stand at St Mary's Church Community Day - Allan Winrow to organise. Library Gardens: Andy Tallon of Continental Landscapes requested what we'd like to see here. Some major pruning is required which will not look 'pretty' in the short term. Andy Tallon, Kevin Holmes, Lisa Grealey and Allan Winrow will meet on Friday 11 January 2013 at 10.30am to discuss this. We shall include an article in the Hub to let people know why it is being cut back i.e. security and promote healthy growth etc. We also include suggestions of sponsorship of shrubs etc and the date of the community meeting. Joan Stocker agreed to organise this. Sapling Donations;

Page 3 of 5 WlNDERMERE TOWN COUNCIL Wednesday 9 January 2013 at 11 am, The Council Chamber, Broad Street, Windermere The majority of these will be handed over to the allotments group to plant on the banking between Booths car park and the allotment site (with appropriate permission). Others will be planted in and around beds in the town and the jubilee tree will be planted on The Glebe. New Trophy Category: Defer to next meeting. Windermere in Bloom: Defer to next meeting. In the meantime, the Clerk will provide a list of all responsibilities for the next meeting. Current responsibilities are Adrian Faulkner - publicity/advertising etc; Lisa Greasley - displays; Schools - Joan Stocker; Alan Marsh - trophies and engraving; Diane Fisher - Windermere In Bloom. RHS Britain in Bloom National Meeting: Adrian Faulkner attended this on 21 November 2012. Many other regions attended. There was a suggestion that there is a time basis for UK finalists i.e. break after 2 years; Chairs of regions and nations were united in forming a federation of chairs to pull RHS into line with what they would like to see, not what the RHS requirements are. There will be a chairman meeting to thrash out the rules of engagement in connection with this; There are to be two new categories this year; Looking to appoint ambassadors for 'in blooms' to take on mantels of areas; New training sessions for anyone linked with schools in Liverpool at 90 a session; 2014 is 50 th anniversary of BIB. Looking to create a Guinness World Record of sowing poppy seeds; We shall be competing against 7 others in the Britain in Bloom competition; Big campaign for community based projects - RHS 'Edible Britain' includes free seeds of many herbs such as chives, parsley, dill, thyme, marigolds, nasturicians, spinach - to be planted in April. Adrian Faulkner is willing to order seeds on behalf of community groups. New judging criteria for BIB has previously been forwarded by email. We need to gauge how to address previous comments. Adrian Faulkner is attending a BIB seminar meeting on 31 January 2013 on our behalf. This is a finalists meeting to go through the launch of edible Britain and will include breakout sessions for various groups. Plant Sales: We shall provide a plant swap stall at the community meeting and ask the food group

We shall provide refreshments and sell what is made to contribute towards any costs. We need to make contact with Leanne Coulson at Hayes, Horticare, Holehird, Kevin Holmes and Peter Howarth to establish any involvement they may wish to contribute/donate. \\ Weeding Days: We shall advertise weeding days and sign cleaning at the community meeting where we will take names and contact numbers. 12. Hanging Baskets and Watering Contract: Kevin Holmes and Andy Tallon left the room as both had submitted quotes. Three quotes were received for the 2012 hanging basket contract. Prices were almost the same. The contract was awarded to Horticare due to the type of people they employ and the credibility this holds with the competition. A copy of the judges report and planting suggestions on floral displays will be sent for their reference. We shall also state we need hot, striking colours. Two quotes were received for watering of baskets - Continental Landscapes were awarded the contract based on price only. It was recognised that Kevin Holmes had done an excellent job over previous years but we had to be mindful we were spending public money and times are harder of late. We shall write a letter to Kevin thanking him for his past efforts. Comment - more baskets off lampposts and replaced at eye level i.e. on railings etc. Brackets need to considered. Email from Andrew Tallon: Char boat at Longtail Hill will hold out for another year. WOW factor - sponsorship required to aid in more planting. This shall be brought up at the community meeting and in The Hub. Joan Stocker shall ask Hayes for any contributions towards planting. Wild flowers in Bowness cemetery - try for another season.
