Nawas International Quality Christian Tours Since 1949

Introducing the Tour Director Ferrell Jenkins One of my greatest joys is showing others the land where Bible events took place. It would be my pleasure to have you join us for this exciting tour of Turkey and Greece. Ferrell Jenkins has been conducting tours of the Bible Lands for Christians since 1967. He served as chairman of the department of Biblical Studies at Florida College, Temple Terrace, Florida (1991-2001). He continues to preach and conduct special lecture series in various parts of the country, and is author of several books. He is an active member of several scholarly societies including the Near East Archaeological Society, Society of Biblical Literature and the Evangelical Theological Society. In 1980 he served on the institutional staff for the archaeological excavations at Lachish. His biographical sketch appears in Who s Who in Religion, Who s Who in the World (17th edition 2000), Who s Who Among America s Teachers (1996), and Who s Who in Biblical Studies and Archaeology. Jenkins frequently presents illustrated lectures on Bible Lands and Customs and on Archaeology and the Bible. His knowledge of the Bible, Bible lands and Biblical Archaeology, along with his expertise in arranging and directing tours, will make the Bible come alive for you. We will be met by our guide for a transfer to our hotel for dinner and overnight. The Grand Bazaar is made up of 4,000 little shops and gives you an opportunity to bargain for a nice souvenir to take back home. Istanbul Izmir Thursday, May 8 Morning flight to Izmir, the Smyrna of the book of Revelation. Sightseeing of Izmir will include Mount Pagos with its magnificent view of the city and harbor, the Agora, and the Archaeological Museum. Highlights include the likeness of Flavius Damianus, an imperial priest under Emperor Septimius Severus, wearing a diadem. Read Rev. 2:8-11. Overnight in Izmir. Pergamum Thyatira Izmir Friday, May 9 Today we continue our visit of the cities of the seven churches of the book of Revelation. Drive north to Pergamum (modern Bergama) to visit the acropolis with its ruins from the ancient city, including the site of the temple of Athena, the famous library, the royal palace, the temple of Trajan, and the altar of Zeus. The theater is the steepest of the world. We will visit the Archaeological Museum and the ruins of the Asclepieum, one of the most important medical centers of the ancient world (Rev. 2:12-17). Continue to Thyatira (Akhisar) to see the few archaeological remains (Rev. 2-18-29). Lydia, the seller of purple who was converted to Christ at Philippi,

was from Thyatira (Acts 16:14), Return to Izmir for overnight. Sardis Philadelphia Laodicea Colossae Saturday, May 10 After breakfast drive to Sardis, capital of ancient Lydia, where surrounding hills have been carved into curious shapes by wind and rain. View significant ruins of Acropolis. Visit the temple of Cybele and Diana which later became a church. See the golden river Pactolus. Visit the reconstructed synagogue and the gymnasium (Rev. 3:1-6). Drive through beautiful table lands to the site of Philadelphia (Alashehir). The city is built on the slope of Mount Tmolus overlooking a fertile valley near where the ancient borders of Mysia, Lydia and Phrygia meet. See ruins of ancient wall (Rev. 3:7-13). After crossing the mountains we come to Laodicea to see ruins of theater, stadium, aqueduct, and scattered remains (Rev. 3:14-22). New excavations presently being conducted at Laodicea are bringing to light exciting Roman period ruins. We will drive a few miles east to the foot of beautiful Mount Cadmus for a view of the mound of Colossae. Overnight at Pamukkale, the site of biblical Hierapolis (Col. 4:13). Hierapolis Aphrodisias Kusadasi Sunday, May 11 Opportunity for worship. Hierapolis is famous for hot mineral springs and terraced travertine formations. Overnight at Kusadasi, the Turkish resort town on the Aegean. Ephesus is one of the most spectacular excavated sites to be seen. Ruins include: the site of the Temple of Diana (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), the harbor, the great theater which seated nearly 25,000 (Acts 19:29), Marble street, the Celsus Library, Agora, Temple of Hadrian, Temple of Domitian, and much more (read Rev. 2:1-7). We will drive to Miletus where Paul preached to the Ephesian elders (Acts 20). Here we may see the agora, the impressive theater, the Lion Tour Highlights Roundtrip Airfare from John F. Kennedy International Airport. Accommodations at first class/select hotels. Breakfast and dinner daily. Private motor coach and comprehensive sightseeing with English speaking guides. We will return to Kusadasi for dinner and overnight. Begin Cruise of Greek Islands Tuesday, May 13 This morning we board a ship of the Louis Cruise Lines for a four day/three night cruise of the Greek Islands. Our first stop will be Patmos, a small island in the Dodecanes group (12 islands), where John was exiled prior to writing the book of Revelation (Rev. 1:9). Visit the island with its 11th century Monastery of St. John the Theologian and the traditional cave of the Apocalypse. Ladies must be covered from neck to knee to enter. Men in shorts not allowed. Rhodes Wednesday, May 14 Rhodes was the location of the famous Colossus built about 300 B.C. and identified as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Some traditions identify the city of Rhodes as the landing place of Paul on the return from his third journey (Acts 21:1), but another tradition identifies a small bay at Lindos as St. Paul s Harbor. The book of Acts does not indicate that Paul spent any time on the island. Upon arrival we depart by motorcoach for Lindos. This is a forty mile drive through the picturesque countryside. A guided tour of the Acropolis of Lindos offers one of the more dramatic sights anywhere. The Our previous tours since 1967 have taken us to almost every area of Bible activity. This travel experience and acquaintance with Bible lands will do much to make this trip the trip of a lifetime for you. The tour is planned to my specifications. We have our own guides and coaches and the tour is under my personal direction throughout. This tour will give you a better understanding of the book of Acts, the Epistles of Paul and John, and the book of Revelation.

The Corinth Canal was cut across the isthmus separating the main land mass of Greece and the Peloponnesus. The canal was constructed in 1881 1893. ruins of the Doric temple stands atop a rocky promontory with a sheer drop of over 400 feet to the sea. From the acropolis you can get a view of the small harbor below. Upon return to the city of Rhodes we will see the most important public monuments, climb to Monte Smith to have a panoramic view of the town and Gulf of Trianta. Rhodes is mentioned in the Old Testament as an area that traded with Tyre (Ezek. 27:15; LXX, RSV, NIV). Herod the Great made several stops here, according to Josephus. Heraklion, Crete Santorini Thursday, May 15 Shore excursions to Heraklion and Santorini are optional. You may choose the shore excursions or spend the time at leisure in the town. Paul stopped at Fair Havens (modern Kali Limenes on the south side of the island) on Crete during his voyage to Rome (Acts 27). Two other cities are named in Acts: Lasea (Acts 27:8); Phoenix (Acts 27:12). Tradition identifies Gortyn as the site of the work of Titus (Titus 1:5). Santorini is the southern most island of the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea. The present shape of the island is due to volcanic activity about 3600 years ago. It is one of the most fascinating places I have ever seen. Athens Friday, May 16 Morning arrival at the port of Athens, the ancient and modern capital of Greece. Our sightseeing of Athens includes the Royal Palace, the Stadium and Temple of Zeus, the Theater of Dionysius, Mars Hill, the Acropolis with the famous Parthenon, the Agora (market place) and Socrates prison. The National Archaeological Museum is included in our tour. The New Testament records the activity of Paul in the city (Acts 17:15-34). Athens and Corinth are in biblical Achaia. Afternoon will be free for leisure activities. Corinth Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18 Morning trip to Corinth. Drive along the Sacred Way of Eleusinian Mysteries, passing the Island of Salamis. Cross the Corinth Canal which connects the Aegean and the Ionian Seas. See the Isthmus where boats were once dragged over land from one sea to the other. Visit ruins of the ancient city where Paul worked with Aquila and Priscilla. See remains of first century shops, the agora, Fountain of Peirene, Temple of Apollo, the Bema (Acts 18:1-17; 1 Cor. 6:1-8; 2 Cor. 5:10). We will try to make a short stop at Istmia, home of the ancient Istmian Games, and Cenchrea, the home of Phoebe and the port used by Paul (Acts 18:18; Rom. 16:1). Return to Athens for some leisure time, dinner and overnight. There will be an opportunity for worship on Sunday. The balance of the day will be free for leisure activities in Athens. Athens/New York Monday, May 19 Departure for home with the realization that we have traversed much of the territory where Paul and John, two great apostles of Christ, did their work. The book of Acts, the epistles of Paul and John, and the book of Revelation will take on renewed meaning for us. It s Easy to Contact Us: Ferrell Jenkins 9211 Hollyridge Pl.
