1890s millworkers at New Lanark NEW LANARK S HERITAGE Today, New Lanark Village is one of Scotland s six World Heritage Sites as well as a designated Garden and Designed Landscape. It comprises of 65 resident homes, a hotel with spa facilities, a hostel as well as an award-winning visitor centre, and a Village Store which dates from 1801. Minutes from the town of Lanark, this gorgeous village is a small piece of history, perfectly preserved resulting in an idyllic retreat to call home. The village was founded in 1785 by Glasgow businessman David Dale and entrepreneur Richard Arkwright. In 1800, the forward-thinking Robert Owen took over management of New Lanark and introduced his Great Experiment, implementing social, moral, educational and workplace reforms. The village was unique in that the workers were given rights and care that was unheard of at the time. Through the series of owners that followed, the ethos of education and recreational opportunities continued until the Mills closed in 1968. Shortly after closure, A-grade listing was granted to all buildings and restoration began in 1974. Double Row 1903 Originally New Lanark Heritage Village had no street names instead individual blocks of houses were named; hence the title Double Row which is the deepest of the tenement blocks in the village and was constructed in the 1790s. 4 www.rettie.co.uk 5
