4 REVIEW OF ACTIONS FROM LAST MEETING 4.1 Martin Baxter to contact Fleetwood Offshore Survival Centre to see if a visit is possible. Martin contacted the centre and they are happy to host a visit see section 7.5. 4.2 Paul Gardner to contact friend to determine if other speaker from SpaceX is willing to do a lecture. Paul Gardner reported that at the moment we are highly unlikely to get a speaker as they are extremely busy but he has asked for a contact. 4.3 Ivan Dean to contact Frank Kirkland to see if he can help facilitate a visit to Rolls Royce Barnoldswick sites. ID reported that he had contacted Frank Kirkland see section 7.4. 4.4 Clive Winby to determine if previous EasyJet speaker would be willing to do a follow up lecture. Clive was unaware of this action so will chase this up before the next meeting. Action Carried Over. 4.5 Manuel Donald-Lopez to purchase some gifts for speakers Action Completed. 4.6 Paul Gardner to confirm date for visit to Velocity Composites Paul has contacted them and they could do either of the next 2 Friday s but this was too soon for us to organise attendees. Paul will propose an event in January and report back. Action Carried Over. 4.7 Martin Hyman to get Speaker to commit to a date for Reaction Engines lecture. Martin Hyman reported that he needs to chase this. Action Carried Over. Page 2 of 12

4.8 Paul Gardner to confirm date for visit to Safran Nacelles Safran Nacelles have agreed to a visit in quarter 1 of 2017. Paul Gardner to propose a date and report back. Action Carried Over. 5 TREASURERS REPORT Manuel Donald-Lopez reported the current financial status. The account balance is 3300.53. Since the last meeting 104.00 was spent on the September Committee Meeting, 161.80 on gifts for speakers and 357.60 on the Autogyro Lecture. A grant payment of 1500 has been received. See appendix 2. 6 FEEDBACK FROM REGIONAL/ HQ MEETING Paul Gardener reported that there is a big drive at HQ for the divisions, including the Aerospace Division to cut expenses. It was noted that HQ recognise the work that our centre does and how much we provide members and it is seen as providing good value for money. We provide a good number of good events at a low cost to IMechE; this therefore offsets our meeting costs. Even so, our centre has had a budget cut; 1500 was received compared to 2000 last year. A report has been completed comparing what groups and divisions do v s commercial areas of IMechE. There have been hints of a big shake up. The UAS Challenge will need to be self-financing next year. The Aerospace division put on a fee paying event this year, however only 9 paying delegates attended, with 12 speakers. The event did break even but even so, 9 paying attendees was seen as very disappointing. Membership is growing however so is the number of retired members and the proportion of non-paying or student members. It was reported that the training element of IMechE is not reaching what it should. A presentation from the Members Outreach Committee described a piece of software that has been designed in order to facilitate joint events; however it has not considered joint institution events. Here in the North West many events are already joint committee, area or institution events. A couple of events are on the table for the division next year: AMSTAC are organising a composites event and the AGM will be combined with a lecture on the history and future of the Trent Engine. 7 EVENTS & ACTIVITIES PROGRAMME - 2016/ 2017 It was decided that the preferred day for events to be held is a Tuesday. 7.1 Auto Gyro Lecture Event Review by Manuel Donald-Lopez Autogyros: where they came from and where they are going The event was held on 21st September at the Mitchel and Kenyan Lecture Theatre, Foster Building UCLAN Preston The speaker was Barry Jones who is an ex-army air corps helicopter pilot and with roles including Blue Eagles display pilot, EW Instructor, Weapons Instructor and Flight commander to Lynx OCU. The first part of the talk was a brief background history of the speaker. Next Barry gave an overview of the history of autogyros how they worked and how they were different to helicopters. While in the army Barry attempted to circumnavigate the globe in an autogyro. The attempt was called Expedition Global Eagle. The next part of the talk was a walkthrough of this record attempt and an overview of why it was abandoned. Next Barry talked about the autogyros that his company had developed and the funding routes taken so far. The talk was very interesting and generated a lot of questions from the audience. 30 people attended the event. I was not impressed by UCLAN who gave a price for room hire and catering and then after acceptance sent a contract that added on hire of IT and microphones which cost 70 including VAT. This cost was avoided by using laptops and projectors and a hastily manufactured projector stand which was needed due to the room layout. Review by Manuel Donald-Lopez 7.2 Velocity Composites Date: TBC Late January Venue: Velocity Composites, AMS Technology Park, Billington Road, Burnley, BB11 5UB Time: Friday Afternoon Page 4 of 12

Paul has contacted them and they could do either of the next 2 Friday s but this was too soon for us to organise attendees. Paul will propose a date of late January and report back asap. ACTION: Paul Gardner to confirm date (ideally late January) for visit to Velocity Composites asap. 7.3 Kaman Tooling Burnley A visit to Kaman s Tooling site in Burnley has been offered. Martin Hyman reported that he s been in contact with Mike Howarth at Kaman and he has agreed to a visit to their tooling facility. Action Martin Hyman to fix a date for the last week in February (20 th to 24 th Feb). 7.4 Rolls Royce Barnoldswick Ivan Dean reported that he had contacted Frank Kirkland and that he has agreed to a visit, however for the group size to be more manageable it would need limiting to around 6 to 8 people. Mike Wallace is the contact, and we are looking at next year to hold this event. Action - Ivan Dean to go back to Mike Wallace and fix a date for the tour in late March (20 to 31 st March). 7.5 Helicopter Rig Fleetwood Proposed visit to Fleetwood Offshore Survival Centre (FOSC), which is a leading provider of safety, survival and fire training to both the Merchant Navy and the Offshore Oil & Gas Industries. The centre has a Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) simulator at the facility. Martin Baxter contacted the centre and they are happy to host a visit and want to know, how many will be attending and when we would like it. It was decided that after Christmas would be best and that a day visit would be preferable but we will fit in with their requirements. Action - Martin Baxter to fix a date for the visit in late April 2017 (18 th to 28 th ). 7.6 Reaction Engines Date: TBC Late May ideally 22 nd to 26 th Venue: Manchester University Time: TBD Martin Hyman reported that he needs to chase this. Page 5 of 12

ACTION: Martin Hyman to get speaker to commit to a date (ideally late May 22 nd to 26 th ). Manuel Donald-Lopez to arrange room once date is known. 7.7 Met Office Lecture / Easy Jet / FAAM Date: June/ July / Sept Venue: Manchester Airport Hotel TBC / Tour on-board FAAM Time: 18:00 for 18:30 Speaker: Mr. Ed. Stone (A scientist with the met. office working in the aircraft observations group) Title: The Weather, Volcanic Ash and Other Aviation Hazards Organiser: Martin Hyman Martin has been in contact with Rachel Deakin and proposed the with a possible hotel venue near Manchester Airport. The hotel costing is 250 for the room with tea and coffee charged per head. It was suggested that we could hold a combined event with the Met Office lecture and EasyJet to discuss the results of volcanic ash test program and successful development of the AVOID (Airborne Volcanic Object Identifier and Detector) sensor. A side topic of use of drones from maintenance inspection was also suggested. Action - Clive Winby to determine if previous speaker from Easy Jet would be willing to do a joint follow up lecture with the Met Office / FAAM. Martin Hyman reported that Met Office can t commit to a date until after April next year. It was decided to put this in the programme for June/July/Sept 2017. Action - Martin Hyman to check with Met Office and see if they would be willing to do a joint event with Easy Jet / FAAM. Also mention proposed date June/July/Sept 2017. Thurai Rahulan stated that he had a contact involved with the FAAM aircraft. Guy Gratton is based at Cranfield. The aircraft was recently at Manchester. Action - Thurai Rahulan to contact Guy Gratton and ask if/when the aircraft will be back in Manchester and if we can have a tour and lecture. If the aircraft is not available TR will ask if Guy will Page 6 of 12

present a lecture. Also ask if a joint lecture with Met Office & Easy Jet would be a problem. 8 EVENT WISH LIST The following possible events were discussed at the meeting: 8.1 Wind Turbine Blades Andrew Medd proposed an addition to our wish list of lectures. He suggested an event on Wind Turbine Blades as Siemens have recently opened a factory in Hull. 8.2 UAS Challenge Paul Gardner has asked if the UAS Challenge would be willing to come and give a talk, they are willing but no date has yet been defined. Paul proposed that one of the university teams plus someone from the IMechE team attend. Action Paul Gardner to fix a date with UAS Challenge for this event in late October. Thurai Rahulan informed the committee that he knows Rashid Ali, who was one of the instigators of the UAS Challenge within IMechE. Rashid is based in Coventry University. Action Thurai Rahulan to find out if Rashid Ali is still involved and if he would be willing to give a talk. The proposed date for this event was early October. 8.3 Other ideas For a list of other ideas see appendix 3 9 ANY OTHER BUSINESS 9.1 North West Region Annual Dinner 2017 Andrew Medd reported that the North West Region Annual Dinner 2017 will be held on Friday 31st March 2017 at the Hilton Hotel Manchester.
