YMCA OF GRAYS HARBOR Summer Staff Levels & Positions Volunteer Staff / Counselor-In-Training (SIT / CIT) Overview: For experienced campers, age 14-16 years old, a Staff-In-Training (SIT) position makes a great first job. SITs learn responsibility, accountability, and leadership through serving others all in the beautiful environment of camp. SITs attend Staff Training Week and two other weeks during the camp season. During this time, SITs have the opportunity to try working at camp at a lower commitment and responsibility level than paid Staff, and we get to see if they have the potential for greater work. Positions: Program & Kitchen Assistants (4 per week) Requirements: Kitchen staff must have a current Food Worker s card. Please note: Volunteer applicants must complete a Volunteer Application Packet available at the YMCA of Grays Harbor. Junior Staff Overview: For young people age 16-18 years old, a Junior Staff position is a great opportunity to gain career and life experience, prove their work and personal ethics, and develop their emerging leadership skills. Experience is highly preferred, typically as an SIT, leadership positions at school or community organizations, or Outdoor School. These are the first paid positions at YMCA Camp Bishop, and are required to work Staff Training Week and all five weeks of summer resident camp. Positions: Kitchen Staff (4), Lifeguards (4), Arts & Nature Staff (3) Requirements: Kitchen staff must have a current Food Worker s card. Lifeguards must have current ARC certifications. Staff Overview: Proven leaders age18-20 years old, with camp staff experience and/or related education, Staff members are the backbone of YMCA Camp Bishop. Ready for increasing responsibility, Staff members serve as Cabin Counselors and Program Area Directors leading, guiding, and ensuring the emotional and physical safety of 8-12 campers. Counselors live in cabins with campers, and are positive role models and skilled problem solvers. Staff members work as a team with other counselors, with the guidance and support of a unit director. Positions: Archery Director (1), Aquatics Director (1), Nature Director (1), Challenge Course Director (1), Challenge Course Assistant (1), Cabin Counselors (9 each Boys & Girls), Cook (1), Medic Assistant (1), Maintenance Assistant (1) Requirements: Kitchen staff must have a current Food Worker s card. Aquatics Director must have current ARC certifications. Challenge Course staff must have current certifications or attend required training. Previous camp staff experience strongly desired for all Staff positions. Current First Aid and CPR certifications are preferred for all staff. Senior Staff: Overview: Senior Staff age 21+ years old, are the top leadership of YMCA Camp Bishop. Responsible for the operation and safety of all aspects of camp, these positions are highly demanding and deeply rewarding. The Program Director oversees all Program Area Directors, Program Staff, and SITs; the PD is the senior staff member after the Camp Director. Boys and Girls Leads model exemplary behaviors and staff performance while living in cabins with campers and the teams of Cabin Counselors they supervise. The Medic is responsible for emergency response, first aid, determining need for escalation of care, and administering all regularly prescribed medication in camp; the Medic may supervise a Medic Assistant. Positions: Program Director (1), Girls Lead (1), Boys Lead (1), Medic (1) Requirements: Kitchen staff must have a current Food Worker s card. Aquatics Director must have current ARC certifications. Challenge Course staff must have current certifications or attend required training. Previous camp staff experience required for all Senior Staff positions; graduation from a college recreation or education program may be substituted for experience. Medic must have at least a current First Responder certification; EMT or RN are strongly preferred. Current First Aid and CPR certifications are preferred for all staff.
