FLYPAPER June 2009 The Official Newsletter for EAA Chapter 477, Charleston, South Carolina The President's Corner Our May activity, the Walterboro Wings n' Wheels event this past Saturday has been described as a tremendous success by many people. This was in the planning stage for almost two months. Make sure you read the complete report on page 2. Whenever an activity or event like this is undertaken, a lot of legwork is required. But before one can take any individual credit, we need to remember that the real thanks must go to the owners of the planes and cars. Without them, there would be no show! I personally would like to thank every one of them for making the day the success it was. Our partners in this event at RBW did an outstanding job of recruiting planes, covering logistics and getting local media coverage. The turnout from local Walterboro residents was great. Many of these people and their children haven't had a chance to get close to planes and talk to the pilot owners and builders. I received a lot of positive comments about this. We had intended to serve BBQ from the canteen, but it was obvious that the event had grown beyond our capability. The decision was made a week before the event to let a local concession operator take the reigns, who agreed to give us a portion of his profits to cover our printing and mailing costs. As promised, we posted updates on our home page but many people didn't check there, so they didn't know about the menu change. However I think most were happy with the food served. Everybody is excited about doing this again next year. We will spend some time evaluating what went well and what we could improve on, so that next year it will be even better. Upcoming Events June 11 - EAA Chapter 477 Meeting. Thursday 6:30 pm in Don Alexander's hangar at the Summerville Airport (when you come through the gate you'll see hangars on your left. Bruce Huffine's is the first one and Don's is the 2nd. We're going to check out Don's soon-to-be-flying RV-8 and grill some hamburgers & hot dogs. June 14 SC Breakfast Club Cheraw Municipal Airport (KCQW) June 26-29 - Charleston Harborfest. Of course this is primarily a nautical event, including a gathering of tall ships, but there will be an air show on Saturday & Sunday: www.charlestonharborfest.org /air_show.html CAFB Expo No Expo this year. The next one is June 2010 June 28 - SC Breakfast Club Triple Tree, Woodruff (SC00) July 27 - August 2 EAA AirVenture, Oshkosh, WI www.airventure.org Now my Cozy IV progress report: Hmmm. Well, I got a little sidetracked. I did spend some time with the Walterboro Wings n' Wheels event; that was worth it. But, it is time to get back and spend some quality time on the project. So not even a picture this month. Really, look for great progress next month! -Glen Phelps, President Page 1 of 5

Walterboro Wings n' Wheels By just about any measurement the May 30th Walterboro Wings n' Wheels event was a tremendous success. We had great weather after many days of rain & overcast skies. We didn't get an accurate headcount for the total number of attendees, but our best estimate is over 400 people. By far the largest event we've hosted in the past few years. Of that number roughly 25% were plane nuts but the majority were from the general public, most of whom had no exposure to general aviation before this event. Many of the pilots were very helpful in answering questions about their planes and sport aviation. The Walterboro Cruisers were out in force with some of the finest custom cars in the Lowcountry. Obviously "plane nuts" got a kick out of seeing the show cars and vice-versa. Speaking of planes, we had at least 57 aircraft participate, including LSAs, homebuilts, biplanes, warbirds and miscellaneous factory-built planes. Some aircraft were over 60 years old (and lovingly maintained) and at the other extreme a couple homebuilts were completed as recently as 2008. And of course the skydiving operation was ongoing most of the day. Something for everyone! The Colleton County Rescue Squad was also on hand, answering questions & displaying three of their big emergency vehicles (which fortunately they didn't need to use that day). Our partner, the Walterboro Airport, organized logistical support for crowd control, port-o-lets, the"follow-me" vehicle (which was also used to help transport those who couldn't walk long distances), press contacts, etc. Thank you Roger Medlin, Ops Management Assistant. I especially want to thank our Chapter President, Glen Phelps, who worked tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the event, planning and promoting it. It became Glen's personal mission to make sure this event was as successful as possible, and reflected positively on Chapter 477. I know he gave up a lot of his personal time (including Cozy build time) to make it happen. (cont. on next page) Page 2 of 5

Walterboro Wings n' Wheels (cont. from page 2) Rich & I also helped with planning, and along with Bruce Huffines and Mac Boatwright spent the day tending to the various tasks: handing out Chapter 477 info sheets, filling out prop cards, selling balsa gliders, photography and doing the general meet & greet with the public. As you know there are now many insidious forces chipping away at our aviation rights, and most people know very little about sport aviation. I think this event was good P.R. for the Walterboro airport, EAA Chapter 477 and general aviation. We would like to thank the cadets from the Charleston Coastal Comp. Squadron and the Walterboro Red-tail Comp Squadron for their help in parking cars and marshaling aircraft. We thought it would be fun to sell Guillows balsa gliders so we ordered 60 last month, assuming we'd use leftovers at various club functions this year. Well, there weren't any leftovers. We sold out in less than 2 hours! Our goal wasn't to make a profit. We just wanted to make a few kids smile. I think we had 60 smiling kids (and a few adults) that Saturday. We had a great day. Was it a flawless event? No, there are things we could have done better. Glen is planning to meet with Roger Medlin, Rich Hassell and me this week to discuss what went well and what are areas for improvement, so we can have an even better Walterboro Wings n' Wheels next year. Note: to see more photos of this event click the Photo Albums button at www.eaa477.org -Kevin Thorp, Secretary I also want to note the excellent food (fried mushrooms, chicken fingers, hot dogs, etc.) by Ollie's Concessions. As Glen said this event grew too large for our Chapter to feed so Jack Ollie Wright stepped in to cater & agreed to help cover some of our marketing costs for the event. Judging by the line to buy food I think the crowd was pretty happy with Ollie's menu. Page 3 of 5

Treasurer's Report Does this get your attention? May 09 beginning balance $2,248.55 Receipts 50.00 Expenses 232.39 Petty cash 60.00 End of May bank balance $2066.16 Sometime during this month (when all the income and expenses have been received) I will generate an income statement pertaining to our May 30, Walterboro event. We had a great event, very well received by the public and our pilot guests. I also believe we will be pleasantly surprised by how little this event has cost our chapter. We even made $6.61 profit selling balsa gliders. Too bad we were not selling real airplanes. -Rich Hassell, Treasurer Then you're obviously interested in sport aviation!
