Chapter Director s Corner John Read, AZ-S Chapter Director We will be planning some rides around Arizona now that the weather is cooling off, let me know if It is finally cooling off in the desert and our riding season is now in high gear. Our Arizona you have any places you would like to visit. Make sure you sign up on our Meetup page, it is District Rally is coming up quickly and will be free to do so and that way you won t miss out on the last weekend in October out in Lake any upcoming events. Havasu City. Send your registrations in now Ride safe! for what will be a fun filled weekend on the Colorado River at the Nautical Beachfront Resort. If you get a chance the aspens are sure colorful this year up in Colorado. Colorado Highway 550 or the Million Dollar Highway which the locals refer to as The Loop can easily be done on a three day weekend. I usually ride up to the Cortez area, spend the night and the next day take my time and enjoy the amazing mountain scenery. Durango is a great place to spend the second night and there seems to be a few less tourists in town so the hotel rates are a bit lower. The best colors I saw were around 8,000 feet now and dropping fast as winter approaches. I was able to try out my Cycle Gear Freeze Out base layer and I highly recommend picking up a set. The wind and rain does not penetrate this material and yet it breathes and can be worn when temps are in the low 70 s as long as you are rolling down the road. Chapter S will also be holding some training out at the Community Center in Fountain Hills in February for those needing to pick up some classes. It will be a full day of learning presented by our Chapter Educator, Connie Jo Richtmyre, and we will put out more details in the next couple of months. If there is a course you need for Levels please let Connie Jo know, her contact information is on the cover page. 2
Membership Enhancement Summer is over,...fall is in the air Maryann & Joe Lisenby Where did the summer go, it was a fast one, or at least it seems to Joe and I as we say we can t believe that October is just a few short days away. We have been back in Alaska since late April enjoying our less than 100+ temps. I think we got up to probably 80 a few days, but mostly in the 70 s and we have had a manageable amount of moisture to keep our grass green and our fire danger down for most of the state. As I write it s currently 36 outside and we do have what we call termination dust on the mountains. Snow! Currently we are hoping that we will be returning in mid-october, but we still have some family events that we must attend before we go so we are on a holding pattern at the moment, but we do hope that we will be able to make it to the rally in Lake Havasu and get to see many of you there. If not soon after. In June GWRRA home office announced a logo contest to design a 40 th Anniversary logo for them. I entered it with a logo, although I didn t win, it was fun going through the process of coming up with one. I m still waiting to here who that lucky winner was. Did you get to ride up to Wing Ding in Billings? I followed it on Face book with many of our GWRRA friends thought out the country. Joe and I got to sit down with friends from Louisiana last week that attended and they say it was a great time and that they enjoy it. I heard last spring that they had thought it would be the best attended in many years. Do hope you got to make that great ride although on the way back many ran into hail, sleet and snow. Next year is Grapevine, Texas and Joe and I have at least made the hotel reservation. It s never too early to start planning for next year. It s another short ride you will enjoy for sure. We have gained a new member into Chapter S during August, I hope that you will welcome Robert Whalen, he lives in Scottsdale. Well that s all the news I have for this month, I know that I ve been a tad lazy over the summer in writing, but my mind is thinking of some new articles for the coming months. Joe and I hope to see you all soon and in the meantime Keep the Rubber side down. Joe and Maryann Lisenby Membership Enhancement Chapter S 3

Practice Field Days Practice Field Days give all riders, regardless of riding abilities, a chance to practice and increase their riding skills. These multichapter field days give riders an opportunity to ride a variety of maneuvers at their own skill level, to ask questions and to have fun riding. Have trouble getting your Wing on it s center stand? Not sure how to pick it up? This is the place to learn! All riders, all levels are welcome. In keeping with the GWRRA tradition of SAFETY, all riders must wear helmets, long sleeves, long pants, over the ankle boots and full-finger gloves. See you there! October 9th 8-10 AM Turf Paradise A special thank you to TURF PARADISE, located at 1501 W Bell Road in Phoenix, for allowing us to hold our Practice Field Day ( PFD ) in their parking lot. PFD gives motorcycle riders of all skill levels an opportunity to practice and improve their slowriding, maneuvering skills in a no-pressure, safe environment. 12
