December 2015 Newsletter CASA de AERO R/C Club Prescott Arizona http://casadeaero.com/ AMA Charter 1723 PRESIDENT Dave Domzalski 237-9093 VICE-PRESIDENT Matt Hinshaw 710-3255 SECRETARY Al Weikart 315-391-1364 TREASURER Dave Marston 778-4967 SAFETY OFFICER Rudy Arp 227-0467 BOARD MEMBERS Peter Genereaux 499-4287 Walter Wilken 273-4243 CHIEF FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR Cole Field 503-586-8253 NEWSLETTER EDITOR Gary MacCauley 443-8934 gmaccauley@qwest.net COEDITOR Tom Gatchell 442-1436 steeragemate@cableone.net The FAA, AMA, ERAU, and others are starting to dive into the drone business. There s been a flurry of emails and meetings concerning what safety policies and clearances might be needed. The AMA appears to be integrating their database. Not only that but it appears the AMA is informing the FAA of known flying sites. If you are on the CdA club roster the AMA may be looking for your dues. Casa de Aero membership follows the calendar year whereas AMA memberships will run one year from the application date (unless you have a multi-year or life membership). To make things easier for our secretary please continue to renew both your AMA and CdA memberships in December. Both are still required to be an active member and there is no prorating for renewing members. The field remains in very good condition. At the next meeting Dave Marston will give a talk on custom quad copter construction. I will give a talk on Anything Can Fly. Some say that anything will fly with enough power. Others say that CG is the single most important element to success. I will explain a graphical method for finding the CG for unusual aircraft configurations and control surfaces. Examples include the Speed Wiener, Great Pumpkin and X-mas Tree (stump sitter). Coming Events: CFWU 8-10 on the 12th 9-11am From the top, By, Dave Domzalski President NEXT MEETING will be the first Tuesday of the month. Meetings start at 7:00 PM in room 101, Building 21 (Robertson Aviation Safety Center) On the Embry-Riddle campus, 3700 Willow Creek Road. Visitors are welcome! See you there! Page 1

Ron and Dave dragged and rolled the field. The runway is very hard since it was regraded. * The Tucson shootout was a big event. They had many 40% airplanes. We have our new board in place. Matt and Cole switched roles. Otherwise the board is unchanged. The club will receive notifications when memberships are expiring. If the member does not renew by the deadline, the club will receive notice and will be obligated to halt flying privileges. ERAU UAS is planning a building session Saturday, November 14th 10-5 for building foam board planes on campus. For $100 a complete kit including a T shirt and pizza. A three channel airplane. They are working to have a laser cutter available. One week later, ERAU UAS is planning a combatition at noon on Saturday, November 21st at the CdA field. Show and Tell: Dave started brainstorming for a flying Christmas decoration. He had some sketches. With Dollar Tree foam board, Dave built a Christmas tree. Cut out with a blade from a poster board template. He covered the foam with cellophane. The foam board is used with the paper on both sides. If you peel the paper off, it saves 20% of weight, but seriously decreases the strength. The equipment added more weight than the airframe. Dave designed it to fly off the tail or as a hand launch. Dick Judy made his stock of parts available. Meeting adjourned at 7:49 PM. Respectfully submitted by Al Weikart. Page 2

It s Membership Renewal Time! See page three. For Casa de Aero membership renewal, you must have an open AMA membership. For most of us AMA membership expires as of December 31st unless we have taken care of renewal. As an AMA Chartered Club, Casa de Aero is obligated to refuse flying privileges to those without an open AMA membership. We have been very lenient in the past, but with the recent attention to UAS and our proximity to an airport, Casa de Aero needs to be in compliance. So, even if you are a bit tardy with CdA membership, be sure to re-up with AMA if you want to fly! Dave s new flying trees. Jack s Vampire jet. Ron s Combat plane. Shel s new Viper. Shel s Bipe.
