food & wine Green committee for growing garden By Rebecca Jenkins There is nothing quite so important today than conservation of our environment and natural resources. Deep in the heart of Muswellbrook, there s a project already underway that s dedicated to advertising the importance of sustainability and healthy, green living. What s more, the project is designed to bring people within the Muswellbrook community together. The Muswellbrook Community Gardens is a budding concept, which instigator Kirsten McKimmie has high hopes of building on. In order to do this however, Kirsten will need a little bit of help. Kirsten is a passionate community member who is super-excited about growing food, sustainability and self-sufficiancy. She s already quite proud as to the gardens and it s progress. So far the garden has nine raised-garden beds filled to the brim with the likes of eggplant, squash, spinach, chilli, tomatoes and many other vegetables. Also, there are citrus trees, hose facilities and a compost bay churning out fresh fertiliser on a regular basis. The beauty of the gardens is the community factor - all involved pitch in. Volunteers water the gardens and help tend to the plants. Kirsten would, however, love to see the garden grow by involving members of the community from all walks of life. I d love to see people from the international community growing food from their home countries, or an Indigenous bush tucker garden. That sort of thing. says Kirsten. Then we could have a harvest lunch once a month and everyone can share all the different foods we grow and we can learn about food from different cultures. Kirsten would also love to see different community businesses commandeer their own beds within the garden. Kirsten also envisions more play equipment, a barbecue, a picnic area, chooks, a market stall and more beds so that more produce can be made to sell and to give to the Red Door Community Kitchen. The only way any of this will be possible, is by forming a committee. Kirsten is looking for individuals from all walks with an interest in green sustainability. A broad range is needed from those with horticultural knowledge to those who can help man a market stall and they can input as much or as little time as they please. It s a community garden, and it should be run by people from the community. Having many people on the committee will bring different ideas and support. says Kirsten. If you feel you d be ideal, please contact Kirsten on 6549 3785 or visit the garden s Facebook Page and send a direct message. The Facebook site also provides information on upcoming events to be held at the gardens such as a a working bee and painting workshop coming up on Saturday 21st February commencing at 10am. Bring the whole family along and enjoy a harvest lunch on completion. The Muswellbrook Community Gardens is a fantastic and worthwhile concept designed to not only bring the community together, but to help our much-loved environment. equine trend & more Jim Gibson s death thins the ranks of Hunter icons By Brian Russell The death of Jim Gibson last Thursday 12 February 2015 at Murrurundi at the age of 84 further thins the ranks of the icon Hunter Valley horsemen who played major roles in the breeding industry in the third quarter of last century. For much of that era, Jim was a workhorse for entrepreneurial George Ryder, the head of what then challenged as Australia s leading studs, Woodlands, Hunter Valley. A former lower Hunter Valley bus business proprietor and a very good golfer and tennis player, George was a foundation director of the Sydney Turf Club and is credited with being the father of the Golden Slipper. He also founded Australian Racing and Breeding Stables (ARABS), the world s first stock-exchange-listed thoroughbred company. Three of Ryder s best sires stood in care with the skill and expertise of Jim Gibson at Woodlands which were the importations Port Vista (sent out by Stanley Wootton), Pipe of Peace and Sostenuto. In 1970 Woodlands was sold to a partnership of Lord Derby (England) and King Ranch (America) and Ryder purchased the historic Kia-Ora Stud, Segenhoe Valley, Scone and installed Jim Gibson as manager. Among the stallions they stood were iconic local champions Baguette (died at 17) and Gunsynd (died at 16). Jim continued on at Kia-Ora when it was secured by Gunsynd s owner John Clift and later when it was in the ownership of construction engineer Hans Ohff. The last sire in Jim s care was the imported American Youthful Legs. A recipient of an award from the Hunter Valley Breeders Association for services to the industry, Jim Gibson in recent years has been assisting Scott Irwin at Rothwell Park, a leading agistment farm at Murrururundi. Jim is survived by his wife Shirley and their children, Stephen, Greg and Vicki and their families. lesiure & lifestyle The truth behind historic photos Delve into the fascinating stories behind some of Australia s most iconic photographs in Behind the Truth, a new travelling display now open at Singleton Library. The exhibition features 10 iconic images from the State Library s unrivalled collections that question the role of truth in photography. The exhibition illustrates the duplicity behind some very famous imagery, such as Edward Searle s heroic image Southern Sun in Sydney, 1930. Southern Sun in Sydney celebrates the arrival in Sydney of pioneer aviatrix Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. However, her plane The Jason, which features in the background of the image, crashed in Brisbane and she arrived in the Southern Sun with Charles Ulm and the photograph is actually a montage of three images. Even renowned Australian photographer Max Dupain cannot escape the scrutiny, with the truth behind one of his most famous images, The Sunbaker, revealed in this exhibition. The Sunbaker has come to epitomise the quintessential Aussie male, but the model (Hal Salvage) was actually a British architectural engineer with a pronounced English accent. The exhibition highlights that photographs cannot always be as truthful as other historical resources. The photographs will be on display at Singleton Library until 26 February 2015. entertainment scene Simply too stuffed to jump Furniture, Giftware, Soft Furnishings, Jewellery, Accessories, Clothing, There are very few acts that can keep an audience enthralled for the entirety of its set. 2 STUFD 2 JUMP is defi nitely one of those that will keep its audience up, dancing and swinging! Formed and fronted by Nick Mandas, the band has a wide selection of songs that suits a large selection of punters of all ages and personalities. While the members are all semi-retired from the music industry, the pull was just simply too strong, says Nick, and so he formed the band (whose name comically refl ects their careers. Once happy to leap from PA stacks during a performance, now simply 2 STUFD 2 JUMP). The band started about 3 years ago, we were all semi-retired musos teaching kids on our respective instruments and just happened to be getting bored and a bit restless so we decided it s time to get back on stage again and have some fun. recalls Nick. Initially we thought if we do one gig a month that would satisfy the urge, but we came up with a pretty good product so the one-a-month kind of snowballed as we have never yet played a venue that has not asked us back again. Playing regular gigs throughout the Hunter, the boys are now set to headline in Muswellbrook at the Muswellbrook District Workers Club next Friday, 27th February at 8:30pm, with the added bonus of free admission in the main lounge. While you re there, why not check out the scrumptious dining and other facilities on hand? It ll prove to be the ideal night out. There are plenty of other gigs coming up featuring 2 STUFD TO JUMP. Check out our vision on Youtube and our facebook page by googling Nick Mandas or 2 stufd 2 jump. For a guaranteed fantastic night fi lled with lively music, don t miss 2 STUFD TO JUMP.
