7 January 2013 The STAR The CDO s R.P.O. W ell, we have traveled through (the) Christmas season and I hope you received that which you most desired. It may have not been a new locomotive or that new passenger car set, but rather better health for you, a family member, or close friend. I am blessed with family and friends as I hope you are. As the Texas Western Model Railroad Club ventures into its 17th year, we might take a look at where we have come from and where we are going. From a small group of modular layout modelers deciding to break away from their current club in 1996 and form a new permanent club, to the laying of the first rail on a plywood base, to the completion of the loop into the big room in 2001; we have always been building. We have constructed scenery, torn it down, built yards, torn them out, put in rail joiners, and removed them again; yet through it all we have rebuilt better and moved forward. Sometimes in leaps, but most of the time at a steady pace adding track, structures, and scenery to build arguably the best layout in the southwestern USA. We have struggled with electrical issues, changed control systems to Digitrax, and moved from rudimentary operations to sophisticated Pro Trac in order to make our railroad empire come alive. We have structures that would win awards if entered into contests, and structures that qualified members toward their Master Model Railroader goal; there is much talent and skill in this club. Yet we are willing to share this knowledge with clinics and partnering with a new person. We actively seek out younger people and women to balance our family and share the joy of model railroading with a broader base of people. We have been visited by, my very rough estimate, over 7,000 people in these 17 years; many have decided to join our group of friends and modelers after visiting. We have only a few of the original members left in the club now, with the most noticeably missed being our best friend and benefactor, Joe Williams. We have been blessed with great leadership over the years and currently, along with some interesting episodes that have thankfully faded with time. We will again face obstacles and challenges, but we will persist because we are not just a model railroad club, but a group of close friends with a very common interest and concern. As we move into 2013, we may be moving to a new location or we may stay here a while longer as we plan ahead. But being a member of the Texas Western Model Railroad Club will always be the best place to be. Happy New Year, Proud Lifetime Member Darrell Cowles Chief Development Officer

8 January 2013 Colorado Passenger Trains of 1945-1959 The Exposition Flyer model train consist by James French The STAR The Exposition Flyer was a Burlington-Rio Grande-Western Pacific passenger pool service inaugurated in 1939 that later culminated, a decade later, with the California Zephyr. It ran from Chicago Illinois to San Francisco, California via Denver Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah that were the change over points between the three carriers. It was so named after the 1939 Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco. The train consists as modeled on the TWMRC is in the later years of service 1947. The engine is CB&Q O-5 # 5931 a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement that ran this route in the winter. It had a streamline pilot and enclosed cab. New F3 EMD diesels could be seen on this route also as the complete train set would not be ready until 1949. The car set is as follows a rebuilt troop kitchen car for mail service, which was dropped off in Denver, a general service standard baggage car, a second mail service car that ran to San Francisco, a standard combine with plated windows for RPO service, then three new Budd stainless steel dome coaches first unlettered, then lettered with Burlington, and finally in 1949 two years after service, California Zephyr. Three to five Pullmans were added depending on load factors. This consists is the CB&Q section that ran from Chicago to Denver where the one mail car would run through and passengers would re-board a D&RGW train. The D&RGW used 4-8-4 in the 1700 series for motive power. In Salt Lake the passengers would again change trains to a Western Pacific and ride to San Francisco behind a 4-8-2 that they got from the Florida East Coast. This train name changed in 1949 to the California Zephyr when the rest of the eleven car all stainless Budd cars were complete.
