From the Freight Shed Bob Verkuyl, Superintendent The Division has begun promoting our upcoming convention in earnest. Over the next three months, we will be attending at least five train shows after the just finished Syracuse show. These are opportunities to tell model railroaders about the benefits of NMRA membership, how our Division works to enhance our members modeling experience and to encourage modelers to attend our convention next September. I ve been taking part in these shows for the past six or seven years and now I ve come to look forward to them. Yes, they are a lot of work and I come home tired, but I enjoy helping people, mostly kids, switch our layout. Some of the operators are making repeat visits and their parents tell us that operating our layout is what the kids liked best at the show. I even like the time I spend telling people about the benefits of NMRA membership. The shows are another venue where I renew friendships and acquaintances. Planning for the convention is developing nicely. Charlie Albee has heard from more than twenty-five layout owners who ll open their houses for layout tours, Drew James reports that we will have about one hundred operation slots available, Jim Heidt is working hard on non-rail activities and the clinic rooms are beginning to fill up. Conditions look positive for a railroad fantrip, but those involved in the negotiations are asking that we don t make any announcement until a contract has been signed. More later. As I write this, a group is preparing to travel to the show in Batavia where we ll be encouraging modelers from western New York to join us September 19-21 in Syracuse. You ll be hearing updates on these efforts at our next meeting on Sunday November 18, at Dick Herir s. This will be the Division s first visit to Dick s where we ll see his very fine layout and I m sure that most of us will leave in envy of his mancave. I hope to see everyone on the 18th. Empire Junction 2019 News The Empire Junction 2019 Committee has been hard at work planning out September 19-22, 2019 Convention. The next Committee meeting is Sunday November 18, following the Division meeting at Dick Hehir's. Convention Layouts Needed Layout tours are an essential part of a model railroad convention. Earlier this year, an email was sent out asking members to respond if they were interested in having their layout open during the convention. We have had a good response, but would still like to add more layouts. If you did not receive the original message or didn t respond, there is still time to be a part of the layout tours. If you would like to be added to the layout tour list, let Charlie Albee know, email calbee@verizon.net or snail mail Charlie Albee, 215 Falls Blvd, Chittenango, NY 13037. Charlie will be collecting detailed layout information in early 2019. You will be asked to make a definite commitment to be a part of the layout tour at that time. Raffle Tom Kehoskie and Aric Penfield are coordinating the Raffle for the Convention. All the profit from the Raffle remains with the CNY Division. If you know of a source of raffle items or would like to donate items contact Aric at apenfield@twcny.rr.com. These should be new items in original packaging, unopened. Jim Heidt Receives Presidents Award Jim Heidt, founding member of the CNY Division, former Superintendent, former Trustee, and current Member Aid Chair received a President's Award from NER President John Doehring at the Erie Limited Convention in Mahwah, NJ this past September. Jim was not able to be present at the awards banquet, so the award was mailed to him. We were pleased to be able to recognize Jim's long service to the members of our Division and the NMRA at our October meeting. At left, Superintendent Bob Verkuyl announces the award.
