The first edition of this festival was organized in 1996, as a fund raiser for environmental and North-South organizations Through the years the festival grew. Nowadays there are two big stages which provide a variety of local and international folk music. About 6000 visitors come to enjoy the friendly atmosphere. The spirit of the festival didn t change with the growth. People involved are all volunteers, committed to bring an alternative to the big commercial festivals. The profit of the festival still go to a good cause. Type of Work: Building a festival is a lot of work, everything will be delivered on trucks and will need to arrange according to the guidance. Setting up the tents dealing with water, electricity supply, fences around the festival ground, stages, back stage, kitchen, bar,... basically everything you need for a festival. Also helping with activities during the festival, animation for kids, working behind the bar etc..also enjoying the festival.. and clean up. Accommodation: In a big two floor garden house in the middle of a vegetable garden, located close to the festival grounds. Please bring your own sleeping bag and mattrass. Limited sanitary facilities are provided in the house, but for more comfort we ll go by bike to the local sports centre to shower everyday as well. No or very limited possibilities to connect to the internet. Language: English Requirements: You don t need anything special, just some working clothes and good shoes. They started doing this because of the lack of camps for this specific group. Most of these kids have difficulty fitting in a normal group, normal camp because of their disorder. That s why a specific approach is necessary. Wemel has this very specific approach learned trough a lot of experience and contact with experts. The children are between 8 and 15 years old, divided in three groups. International volunteers will support a group of local volunteers to give the children a wonderful experience! Type of Work: Building up the tents at the camp site and When the children arrive all volunteers will be assinged to one of the three groups. There the voluntereers participate in the activities, together with the local volunteers. The goal is to entertain, but also to create a warm and well-structured atmosphere. Volunteers can also prepare or organise their own activities. In the evening you enjoy a camp fire! Work with the children can be quite challenging.work hours are bound to the time the kids are awake, so free time is limited. This will be compensated with more free time before and after the camp. Study Theme: To learn the specific method of treating the client of Wemel which are based on respect for the characteristics of each individuals. Without punishments,stigmatizing, but lots of
encouragement. Solving conflict by talking etc... this will be a unique experience to learn from the centre. Description: Ter Dennen is a Red Cross centre for asylum seekers. After arrival in Belgium, refugees are sent to a centre where they receive food and shelter. Ter Dennen is a quite isolated place in a green surrounding. Around 218 refugees from over 20 countries stay there, of which 70 are children and youngsters. Since a lot of people from different backgrounds live together there and the asylum procedure is not always successful, life in the centre is not always easy. Type of Work: You are going to organize activities for people staying in the asylum centre. These activities might be for children, youngster, adults or for the whole group. What we are going to do depends entirely on your motivation and creativity, so your ideas are more than welcome! Keep in mind that people staying in Ter Dennen are passing a very difficult time and it s in our hands to make their lives a bit brighter. Therefore we expect you to be very motivated.you will work 5 days a week and have free weekends. It s up to you how you will spend these. Study Theme: Besides the work itself, a study part is foreseen. The director of the centre will tell you how the centre works and provide you with a basic idea concerning Belgian procedures for asylum seekers. We will also discuss advantages and disadvantages of these procedures. However depth of the information session will of course depend on you as well - on how much interest in this issue comes from the group itself Accommodation: You will sleep in 2 large sleeping rooms in the centre itself. Beds and bed sheets are provided. Good news is that you do not have to cook. We will eat together with inhabitants of the centre. In case you are a vegetarian, please let us know in advance! Language: You should know that you are coming to Flanders, north part of Belgium, where Flemish (= Dutch) is the official language! But don t worry, we do not expect you to speak Dutch. The camp language will be English, though any other languages such as body language or music is also possible. Requirements: Prepare for warm, sunny as well as for cold, rainy weather, Belgium is unpredictable!!! Approximate Location: Food and sleeping place are provided by the project, so the only money you will need is some pocket money for activities in the weekend. Please, keep in mind that the centre is practically in the middle of nowhere, so it will be difficult to go out for a drink in the evening! (The centre will provide some bicycles that can be used during the camp) Notes: When to arrive? It is best to arrive before 5 pm. BE-VIA 9.1: Boombal Festival 2013-08-18 2013-08-31 9: Art, Culture, History 15 0.00 Description: Boombal festival is to promote, support and spread traditional European folk music and dances. It is a 4-days folk music and dance festival (22-25 august) for young and old. Its a multicultural festival with more than 3000 visitors. Volunteers will help to build the festival,during the building up period of the festival we organise a folk dance placement on the same location with different levels of courses. Every evening we organise an additional "Bal" or concert for the volunteers and the participants of the placement.
Type of Work: Building up and breaking down the festival (tents, dance floors, electricity, water, fences, decoration, accommodations, etc..) together with a group of Belgian volunteers. We have a strict deadline because the festival has to be ready on time. So we prefer to inform that we make working days of 8 hours during the building up and breaking down period. Free time during the festival and after the breaking down days (with possibility to visit Ghent or Bruges). Study Theme: Folk dance initiations and musical workshops.
