District 39W Newsletter February 2017 DISTRICT GOVERNOR S CORNER Hello fellow Lions!! It s a great day to be a Lion!! With the Mid Winter convention behind us, it s time to wrap up this year. This has been an experience Lion Lynne and I will never forget. We can t thank you enough for all the great things we have done, so far!! The Mid Winter convention was a huge success!! The festivities started Friday Night with Wine Tasting from local wineries. Saturday was our business meeting and we were honored to have International Director Bruce Beck and his wife Lion Erin visit us from Minnesota and share their words of wisdom during lunch. The breakout sessions took our breath away, literally. Alan Niksich told us how the military and Lions have so much in common. Sue Basabe and Kimber Hall talked about healthy eating and exercise. They had everyone in the room working off their lunch!! Then we were introduced to our newest District Governor Elect and his two Vice District Governor Elects. Here are our elected future leaders: District Governor Elect Lion Tim Vincent, Nampa Lions Club 1 st Vice District Governor Elect Lion James Spanberger, Boise Capital Lions 2 nd Vice District Governor Elect Lion Joe Jara, Star Lions Club We then loaded up on the bus and vans, courtesy of the City of Mountain Home, and traveled to the base. There, we were wined and dined as Queens and Kings at Mountain Home Air Force Base s Gunfighter Club and had a very dynamic speaker, Sammi Tucker, entertain us that evening. Sammi represented Team USA as an archer at last summers Paralympics Games in Rio!! We were also honored

to have the Wing Commander, Col. Jeff O Donnell, and Command Chief Master Sergeant Chad Bickley in attendance. They have extended an invitation to the Lions for a future tour of the base. Although our year is halfway complete, WE have so much left to do. We have chartered one new club, Meridian Roaring Lions, and working on another, Boise West BWC. In addition, CC Jerry Mastel has sent us the information on their diabetes club. He stated we could possibly start two new diabetes clubs in Twin Falls and Caldwell. We have also heard from some former Lions in Middleton on starting their club back up. This is very exciting. We have visited almost half of our clubs and plan on visiting all before years end. ALSO, after the events, please send her some pictures so she can post and show how much fun you had!!**

Build your Lion Legacy by planning a Centennial Community Legacy Project during our Centennial Celebration! These projects are visible gifts to your community. Reminder: Please be sure to report your Legacy Project using the MyLCI Service Activity Report, under the Community and Culture activity type. WHAT IS A MELVIN JONES (MJF) FELLOWSHIP? The Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) recognizes donations of $1,000.00. It is the backbone of LCIF, providing 75 percent of the foundation s revenue. The MJF is an honor presented to those who donate $1,000.00 to LCIF or to people for whom a donation was made by others. Contributions can be made by individuals (including non-lions), clubs or districts. Donations may be in one sum, or in installments of a minimum of $100.00 over a five year period. Melvin Jones Fellows receive an attractive lapel pin, a plaque and a congratulatory letter. DISTRICT GOVERNOR S CHALLENGES UPDATE Pull Tabs Congrats to Boise Capital and Payette Syringa on winning the first two Golden Outhouse Awards. The last award will be awarded at Sun Valley. Continue to collect them. Let s see if your club can top Payette Syringa s 75lbs!!! Steps there are a few Lions participating in this challenge. We have a couple Lions averaging over 500,000 steps a month. That s awesome!! Keep up the great work!!! Membership We are currently at 1097 members. Just think if each club brought in 4 new members by July 1, we would reach our goal and I will shave my head!!!

The Centennial Commemorative Coin has been released and many of you already have purchased one! For each coin sold, $10.00 will be paid to LCIF. Please spread the word about this fabulous coin by promoting it and encouraging others to purchase it at your club, friends, at work, etc. Coins can be purchased through: lions100.lionsclubs.org or at the usmint.gov USA/CANADA LIONS LEADERSHIP FORUM Mark your calendars!!! This is guaranteed a great time!! If you re looking for a great opportunity to learn new things, reenergize your club, and make new friends, then attend this event!! We have set aside $7,000.00 for Lions wishing to attend. Each Lion will be required to pay for their registration, hotel, transportation and food up front. Upon completion of the Forum, you will be required to turn in all receipts. The district will reimburse up to $1,000.00 per Lion, depending on how many Lions wish to attend. We are looking into taking a bus over to Portland. We will need a minimum of 40 passengers. If you have any questions, please contact DG Dennis Burks 208-599-0271 or burks1841@yahoo.com WHEN: September 21-23, 2017 WHERE: Portland, Oregon How to register: http://lionsforum.org
