COMMEMORATING THE 75 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MELFA CROSSING photo: Jennifer Gauthier The Westminster Regiment (Motor) Prior to World War II, the Westminster Regiment consisted of the Battalion Headquarters (HQ), A and B Companies in New Westminster, C Company in Mission and D Company in Chilliwack. The regiment's 1st Battalion was mobilized on 02 September 1939, as a machine gun battalion. The unit was converted from a machine gun battalion to a motor battalion and designated The Westminster Regiment (Motor) in early 1941. Following a period of training in Canada and England, the regiment was shipped to Algiers and then to Naples, Italy where they joined the 8th Army. During the Italian Campaign the regiment formed a part of Major General Burt Hoffmeister's 5th Canadian Armoured Division ("The Mighty Maroon Machine"). photo: Jikael photo: Janet K photo: Radomił Binek On 11 May 1944, the attack on the Gustav Line and the Hitler Line commenced with the 5th Armoured Division forming the exploitation force trying to break into the LIRI VALLEY and advance on Rome. The advance through the valley included the Westminster's most famous action on 24 May 1944. The Officer Commanding, "A" Company at the Battle of the MELFA River, Major Jack Mahony,* was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry and leadership under fire during that action, fought in conjunction with the tanks of Lord Strathcona's Horse (LDSH). This action cemented a friendship between the two regiments. After a period of rest the Westies rejoined the fight on 06 August 1944 for the breakthrough of the GOTHIC LINE. Action included the battles for MISANO RIDGE and CORIANO RIDGE. The regiment prevailed despite heavy shelling and losses, was then relieved by the 4th British Division. Following training, the regiment was back in action and assigned to cross the Uso River and take the village of San Mauro. On 23 September 1944, with "A" Company and "B" Squadron of LDSH in the lead and while under heavy fire, San Vito was captured. This action included the battle at CASALE. On 25 September, the advance continued across the Rubicone River, with the tanks of the Governor General s Horse Guards in support. The attack ran into thick minefields, heavy shelling, but no German infantry. On 10 November 1944 as part of Porter Force, Regimental HQ was in Vincoli with "A" and "B" Companies in San Stefano and "C" Company in Gambellara. Action consisted of extensive night patrolling and night advances to contact the enemy. This pressure forced the enemy back across the Uniti Canal and into San Pancrazio. The regiment advanced by patrol actions across the Ronco River to the Scolo Lama canal, where bitter German resistance was encountered. The Regiment was then given the role of assaulting over the Montone River, capturing Ravenna and the surrounding area. The attack commenced at 0800 hours on 02 December 1944, and the town of San Pancrazio was captured quickly. The Regiment then crossed the LAMONE River in a night attack. The lead elements engaged in a difficult battle in the town of Villanova, where "A" and "C" Companies successfully engaged a column of German tanks with small arms and PIATs. From 12 to 22 December 1944, the regiment was engaged in the battles for the NAVIGLIO CANAL and the River Senio. On 23 December 1944, after 43 days and nights of continuous combat, the regiment was withdrawn for rest at Ravenna The regiment returned to action near the town of Villanova on 27 December 1944 and advanced to take the town of Rosetta. The battle was against the Waffen-SS and the fighting was fierce. As per Westie tradition, the regiment was not deterred and the objective was captured. The unit was relieved on 29 December 1944. Then early in the New Year the regiment was sent to fill a gap in the line at Conventello and bore the brunt of a German counterattack in that area. The attack included massed German artillery and infantry attacks. The result was that the Westminsters in cooperation with the LDSH tanks and the Irish Regiment of Canada held the line. Following a period of rest from 13 January 1945, the unit left Italy on 21 February 1945 for action in Northwest Europe. * pronounced Manny Note that the Regiment s battle honours in Italy are shown in capitals.

BREAKING OF THE HITLER LINE MAY 23, 1944 Led by the Calgary Tanks who crossed the Gari River, the Gustav Line in the Liri Valley was pierced on May 12, 1944. By May 18, the Polish Corps had taken the Abbey of Monte Cassino, the anchor of the German Gustav Line, enabling the British 8th Army and supporting Allied forces, led by the First Canadian Infantry Division and British and Canadian tanks on May 23, to smash the Adolf Hitler (Senger) Line, the most heavilyfortified line that the Allies faced during the Italian Campaign. The line was fortified, not only by barbed wire and other defenses, but by numerous machine gun and 75 mm guns (Panzerturm) emplaced in concrete. Suffering their heaviest losses of the Italian Campaign, the Canadians, from Pontecorvo to Aquino in the Liri Valley, led the breakthrough of the Hitler Line, making way for the 5th Canadian Armoured Division to cross the Melfa River on May 24-25, where Major Jack Mahony of the Westminster Regiment was awarded the Victoria Cross for valour, thus opening the Road to Rome for the Allies. Through the efforts of Karen Storwick of Calgary and Roberto Molle of Italy, a very large and beautiful commemorative plaque was unveiled near the main square of Pontecorvo on May 23, 2009.
