3 Our club now has over 200 members, making it the highest number of members since it began over 10 years ago. New members keep turning up at our different groups looking for friendship and things to do with their new life. I joined in with the Wanderers on their last Caravan and Campers trip in March this year. The location was The Grampians Halls Gap, a beautiful setting, with many bush walks and other activities to suit all age-groups. Marie and Bill were along to setup and supervise the Petanque competition, [setting up in picture at right] which has always been a highlight of the trips. Their assistance in adjudication and education of some of the novice players was much appreciated. The day of the final was blustery and cold but it didn't dampen the spirits of the two teams competing for the Jo Biscombe trophy. This year LACVI is one of the sponsors for the 2015 Victorian Regional Achievement and Community Awards. The awards program will be launched on Tuesday the 5th of May in Geelong and I will represent the LAC Surfcoast at this launch. It will be a great opportunity for me to showcase our club and maybe even nominate it for a community award. As winter approaches I know a large number of members will be seeking warmer places either overseas or heading to tropical Queensland. Enjoy your travelling and stay safe. "Australia is a very confusing place" - thoughts on Australia by Douglas Adams. Australia is a very confusing place, taking up a large amount of the bottom half of the planet. It is recognizable from orbit because of many unusual features; including what at first looks like an enormous bite taken out of its southern edge where a wall of sheer cliffs plunge into the girting sea. Geologists assure us that this was simply an accident of geomorphology but they still call it the "Great Australian Bight" proving that, not only are they covering up a more frightening theory, but they can't spell either! The first of the confusing things about Australia is the status of the place. Where other landmasses are classified as continents, islands or countries, Australia is considered to be all three. Typically, it is unique in this. The second confusing thing about Australia is the animals. They can be divided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd and Sheep. Of the 10 most poisonous arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9. Or it would be more accurate to say that of the 9 most Poisonous arachnids, Australia has them all. However there are few Snakes, possibly because the spiders have killed them all. Visitors should be careful to check inside boots before putting them on, under toilet seats before sitting down and generally everywhere else where spiders might lurk. A stick is very useful for this task. As a result of all the hardship, dirt, thirst and weird animals, you would expect Australians to be a dour lot. Instead, they are genial, jolly, cheerful and always willing to offer a kind word to a stranger. Faced with insurmountable odds and impossible problems, they smile disarmingly and look for a stick. Australian beaches are the nicest and best in the world, although anyone actually venturing into the sea will have to contend with surfboarders, sharks, stinging jellyfish and stonefish, which sit on the sea bed pretending to be a rock with venomous barbs sticking out of its back that will kill just from the pain. However, watching a beach sunset is worth the risk Tips to Surviving Australia: - NEVER put your hand down a hole for any reason WHATSOEVER - The beer is stronger than you think, regardless of how strong you think it is - Always carry a stick - Air-conditioning is imperative - Wear thick socks - Invest in good maps. Stopping to ask directions only works when there are people nearby.. How to identify Australians: * They pronounce Melbourne as "Mel-bin". * They think it makes perfect sense to decorate highways with large fibreglass bananas, prawns and sheep. * They think "Woolloomooloo" is a perfectly reasonable name for a place, that "Wagga Wagga" can be abbreviated to "Wagga", but "Woy Woy" can't be called "Woy". * Their hamburgers always contain beetroot. Apparently it's a must have. * They don't think it's summer until the steering wheel is too hot to touch. *They will react in horror when companies try to market "Anzac cookies". 4 CINEMA CLUB The year is quickly going by and we hopefully will be fortunate enough to get more good movies. We had a great response to the eagerly awaited Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and our "aftermovie cuppa" discussion revealed mixed opinions. We normally meet at Readings Waurn Ponds the second Wednesday of each month, except School Holidays. DATES for next series: *MAY 13th *JUNE 10th (JULY NIL- SCHOOL HOLS) *AUGUST 12th *SEPTEMBER 9th Newcomers need to inform me if they want to be on the Cinema List, I send out the Movie Title and Time about 5 days before. Parking "all day" (3+ hrs) is on Pioneer Rd or at the rear of the Cinema. Directly in front is only 3hrs ( not long enough for lunch + movie ) We meet around 12.00 for lunch at Panache which is about 1+ hrs before the movie.. Convenor: Maurie Dean on 5263 2809 THE WANDERERS Our caravan and campers group travel twice yearly to interesting Victorian destinations, staying in caravans or cabins in caravan parks... 33 LAC Wanderers tripped down to Halls Gap in late March and had a great time. A few new Wanderers joined us this time, and all fitted in very well and joined happily in the majority of our activities. The petanque tournament was a lot of fun. The farewell dinner at the "Balconies" restaurant was excellent. Everybody had a great time and I am sure old friendships were renewed and new ones established. Big 4 at Halls Gap was a wonderful venue and we were well catered for thanks to managers Kathy and Gary. Our next trip will be to PORT FAIRY from SUNDAY 8th NOVEMBER. It has been a popular spot with lots to do.
