In addition to sending to Sertoma HQ s, send to Central Florida District Secretary/ Treasurer Susan Myer and Governor Harvey Rhinehart. 2012-2013 Sertoma Annual Fund In the final 60days to finish current calendar Sertoma year with contributions of just over $233,979 received against a Goal of $300,000! That means another $66,021 is still needed to achieve the goal and maintain the number of scholarships and grants awarded! If your club or you as an individual Sertoman have not yet contributed to the annual fund, please do so ASAP! Introduction: Greater Tampa Sertoma Club History The Greater Tampa Sertoma Club (GTSC) was chartered June 30, 1974 and the charter meeting was held on July 11, 1974 at the Host Airport Hotel (now known as the Tampa Airport Marriott Hotel). The original name of the club was the Noontime Sertoma Club ; however, the name was changed to the Greater Tampa Sertoma Club prior to the charter meeting. GTSC was sponsored by the Downtown Evening Sertoma Club, under the leadership of Larry Walters. The first meeting place was the Downtown Holiday Inn (Tampa), followed by the Admiral Benbow Inn (on Westshore Blvd.), the Sheraton downtown Tampa, First Florida Bank, the Manger Inn, Mass Brothers at Westshore Mall, MacDinton s (Howard Ave.), La Teresita (Columbus Drive) and Lee Roy Selmon s (Spruce St.), which is the current meeting location. Fundraising Activities: Club records indicate that fund raising has ranged between $7,000 and $12,000 per year, averaging about $8,000 per year. Over the many years, different fundraising projects have been undertaken: 1. Horse show that was conducted annually for 10 years. 2. Motor scooter raffle conducted in 1978 during May-Better Hearing & Speech Month 3. Spearheaded the District-wide fundraising golf tournaments from 1992-1997 to raise nearly all of the $100k needed to qualify for a State of Florida matching $50k grant, to establish the Sertoma University of South Florida (USF) Endowed Scholarship In Communication Sciences within the USF Foundation, Inc. This fund as grown to over $250,000. Each year, two graduate students who are studying audiology or speech pathology are awarded a two-year scholarship in the amount of $10,000 ($5,000 per year per student). 4. Two annual art shows with silent auctions 5. Two annual Comedy Nights at Side Splitters, with silent auctions. 2013 will be the 3 rd year. 6. Birdies for Tampa Bay Charities. 2013 is the 6 th year. Civic programs: 1. What Freedom Means to Me essay contest at Turkey Creek Elementary 4 th & 5 th grades from 2001 2011. 2. Sertoma Safe Ears Program at Turner Elementary from 2007 to present. Gold Honor Years: 77-78 87-88 88-89 90-91 93-94 Club Building: GTSC sponsored two other clubs: The Tampa Educators (1988) and The Tampa Health Professionals (1991). Unfortunately, neither club is still active.
