Using the resources of Honeywell s experienced pilot training crews, Flight Sentinel subscribers can request an experienced pilot to fill in gaps in crew staffing when the need occurs. Global Data Center (GDC) Flight Sentinel subscribers may use this resource once per year free of charge. We have been using Flight Sentinel for about four years. We are very happy with the service they provide. Flight Sentinel allows us to keep our schedulers and crews informed of last minute changes in weather, traffic, flight delays and a host of other issues that may crop up. Flight Sentinel is a very important tool in keeping our fleet of business aircraft running smoothly, said Roger Gates, General Manager Aviation, Archer Daniels Midland Company. Introduced in 2003, Flight Sentinel offers an experienced staff of licensed aviation professionals that work with flight departments from take-off to touchdown. As an early adopter of the Federal Aviation Administration s (FAA) collaborative decision making program (CDM), GDC staff communicates directly with the FAA command center every two hours to identify changes in weather, traffic, and airspace restrictions which helps eliminate delays. For more information on Flight Sentinel Services, visit www.mygdc.com.

Primus Elite Display Upgrade Now Certified on The Bombardier Global Express and Embraer Legacy 650 (Coming early 2011 for the Dassault Falcon 900EX/C, Cessna Citation X, and Gulfstream GIV and GV) Attention pilots Primus Elite display upgrade designed for Primus 1000/2000/2000XP, SPZ-8400/8500, and selected SPZ-8000 series avionics systems The Primus Elite flight deck retrofit delivers the most sophisticated and user friendly display upgrade available today, featuring powerful graphics, advanced features, and the improved clarity of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. Safety enhancements include XM graphical weather, Jeppesen electronic charts and maps, and video display capability, all enabled through a cursor control interface. Highly reliable LCDs replace the existing CRT (cathode ray tube) displays and add graphical capability to the flight deck, but without the downtime, expense, or additional pilot training needed with a traditional full cockpit replacement. Features include improved passenger safety and comfort, enhanced situational awareness, and opportunities to grow. The Primus Elite flight deck incorporates advanced weather solutions via XM graphical weather, enabling greater route planning and weather avoidance. Primus Elite also enables smarter and faster decision making while reducing pilot workload, by incorporating an upgraded graphical user interface. The Primus Elite flight deck upgrade increases flight efficiency, system reliability, and aircraft value while also providing growth capabilities for Honeywell s awardwinning SmartView synthetic vision system, IntuVue weather radar, and an advanced map display. We are experiencing intermittent, random failures when attempting to load our Navigation Database using floppy disks and the DL-900 Data Loader. The failures occur at different points in the loading process and require multiple retry attempts before the load is successful. What can be done to improve the process? A. Several procedures have been found to greatly reduce or eliminate the occurrence of these intermittent and very annoying database loading errors when using floppy disks. We recommend the following practices: 1. Verify the floppy disks are formatted to FAT (not FAT32) before beginning the load. 2. When you find a set (or two) of floppy disks that works well in your data loader, stick with them! Do not rotate other new or used disks into the set unless necessary. 3. We have found that many operators with intermittent database loading issues report that their DL 900 Data Loaders have not had the read and write heads cleaned since the units were installed. If it has been an extended period since the heads were cleaned on your unit, we recommend doing so using one of the many commercially-available floppy disk drive cleaning kits. Most are in the $10 $15 range, and are good for many cleanings. Follow the manufacturer s instructions, but the general procedure is to apply cleaning fluid to the felt pad on the cleaning disk, insert the disk into the DL 900, and then operate the DL 900 as if doing an actual database load so that the read head will be cleaned by the spinning disk. Keep in mind that you will need to retry the load multiple times to keep the cleaning disk rotating, as the DL 900 will stop with a fault code when it doesn t recognize a database on the disk it is trying to read. continued on page 6 2

Improvements to Honeywell s Global Data Center (GDC) Make a Splash at NBAA Honeywell announced at NBAA significant enhancements made to its services that make flight planning, scheduling, and day-ofoperations support easier, more efficient, and more enjoyable to use. Over the past year, GDC subscribers have seen scores of exciting new tools and services and the releasing of new functionality every month. Graphical Flight Planning Using Google Maps The GDC website uses Google Maps to make flight planning more intuitive and informative. To improve situational awareness, pilots can overlay route options, optimized routing, Coded Departure Routes (CDR), and the most recently cleared routes, as provided by the FAA Aircraft Situation Display to Industry (ASDI) data feed, SIDS and STARS options, weather, airports, and much more. The GDC also offers Runway Analysis, Weight and Balance, Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS), textual as well as graphical RAIM predictions and many more tools and information to help pilots and dispatchers complete preflight planning. Tracking a Flight Takes on a Whole New Appearance Experience the latest flight following tool that is fast, accurate, and super easy to use. Google Maps makes it simple for authorized users on the ground to track a flight, spot turbulence, and view weather patterns that may cause flight delays. Integrated Flight Planning and Scheduling This is the industry s only flight planning service that closes the loop between large scheduling departments, crews, charter operations, or single aircraft operators. Additionally, the latest generation of Honeywell s flight management system (FMS) upgrades have been designed to work with the GDC to provide more efficient data management and flight planning utility. Seamlessly connecting the GDC scheduling software to the FMS flight plan eliminates entry duplications and ensures flight planning and scheduling information is always up to date making the complex coordination with all departments much easier and more accurate. The integration of flight planning and scheduling tasks with the FMS helps operators maximize their investment and realize greater cost efficiencies. Additional Benefits Include: Simple, intuitive, point and click datalink communications to the fleet Easy access to historical uplink and downlink messages and position reports Worldwide airport and VHF station locator Customized screens Views in Spherical 3D mode Free Training Available Online Experience mygdc.com for yourself. View a live webinar that demonstrates how the GDC is making flight planning, scheduling, and day-of-operation as simple, efficient, worry free, and cost effective as possible. Honeywell Primus Apex Build 7 Update As promised in the April edition of Direct-TO, here is an update of Primus Apex Build 7.2, featuring FMS Version 7.1.2 with an expected certification in the fourth quarter of 2010. One of the exciting new additions in Build 7.2 is the optional Coupled Enroute VNAV. With Coupled VNAV the five sub-modes can be used for all phases of flight (climb, cruise, descent, approach, and missed approach). continued on page 4 3

Primus Apex Build 7 Update continued from page 3 The sub-modes can be automatically coupled to the autopilot including: VSPD VNAV Speed Hold (used for climbs or descents) VALT VNAV Altitude Hold VSEL VNAV Altitude Select VPTH VNAV Path (vertical path guidance used for descents) VGP VNAV Glide Path (used for approaches) Also, the FMS VNAV altitude targets will be displayed on the Primary Flight Display (PFD) with a bug and digital readout. Other new functions in Build 7.2 are the vertical profile of Flight Plan and Terrain (see graphic) and airspace altitude constraints shown on the INAV map. So, as a twist on Frequently Ask Questions, we submit the Frequently Incorrect Assumptions regarding RNP SAAAR operations: 1. RNP SAAAR requires recurrent training every 6 months False RNP does require annual recurrent training. An RNAV (RNP) SAAAR approach can be used instead of a GPS approach as part of normal recurrent flight training to meet the requirements for RNP SAAAR. At this time, Flight Safety and CAE each have approved training programs for the present RNP-approved Gulfstream PlaneViewTM aircraft. 2. Special training is required for each unique RNP approach procedure False Just like an ILS or other approach type, once you re qualified you can shoot all RNP approaches that are in your approved navigation database. 3. You must fly an RNP approach every 6 months to stay RNP current False There is no currency requirement other than annual training. There are possible restrictions on very special RNP approaches in the future, but none exist in the public RNP procedures today. continued on page 5 4

Go Direct Services continued from page 4 4. Each RNP SAAAR approach must be flown in visual conditions before flown in IMC False There is no requirement for each operator to fly an RNP SAAAR approach under visual conditions before attempting to fly in instrument conditions. Each RNP SAAAR approach has been flight tested as part of its development and there is no requirement for each operator to flight test the approach. 5. Pilots must ground-check each RNP approach in the FMS with each navigation database cycle to verify the approach before attempting to fly Well, sort of. The operator does not need to verify each approach when using Honeywell s Go Direct Nav Database (NDB) validation service. With this service, each approach is tested in the FMS, and we check all approach changes each NDB cycle. When you receive your RNP NDB disc you also receive a letter listing the approved approaches for that NDB cycle. Gulfstream RNP SAAAR Database reaches 200 validated approach procedures Go Direct, working with the FAA, has surpassed 200 valid RNP SAAAR approach procedures in the Gulfstream Planeview equipped aircraft. Subscribers to this navigation database can take advantage of tested and validated RNP procedures into such airports. Any invalid procedure is removed from the operator s database so you are assured of flying validated RNP procedures. In addition, Honeywell is already watching for the next new approaches scheduled for release by the FAA in 2011. 5

FAQ s continued from page 2 4. Formatting the disks in the DL 900 itself instead of on the computer has also shown some success in helping with intermittent loading problems, especially when an external USB-style floppy disk drive must be used for disk formatting. Disks can be formatted in advance at a convenient time between database cycles so they will be ready to use when the next cycle is released. To perform disk formatting using the DL 900: Insert disk to be formatted into the DL-900 Go to MAINTENANCE page on the CDU Push NEXT button to MAINTENANCE page 2/3 Push Line Select key 4L SETUP On FMS SETUP page push Line Select key 2R ENGR DATA On ENGINEER DATA page push Line Select key 1L DEBUG On DEBUG MONITOR CNTRL page push Line Select key 1R FORMAT (see example below) The question ERASE ALL DATA? appears.
