Singles and couples are welcome. We meet on the second Saturday of the month, September through May. New members are welcome at any time of the year. UCMUG Meeting The next meeting of the Upper Cumberland Mac Users Group (UCMUG) will be held at the Welcome Center, on Tuesday, November 16 th starting 6:30 p.m. This month there will be a presentation on GOOGLE. CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PARTY It s that time of the year again where we begin planning for the Children s Christmas party at Uffelman Elementary School in Monterey. I will be in need of crayons (24 pack), pencils, erasers and rulers. Anyone wishing to purchase these items and donating them for the gift bags would be appreciated. Additionally, anyone interested in planning and helping out this year s Children s Christmas party, please contact Debbie Melgar at 839-7544 BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Box Tops for Education are located on over 100 products that we use daily. Some of the products are: Kleenex, Scott Tissue, Cheerios, and Ziploc just to name a few. A complete list can be found on the website Box Tops for Education. I collect the box tops and Campbell soup labels for Uffelman Elementary School. Anyone who would like to help me collect the box tops can leave them at the Welcome Center. A big thank you to everyone participating in the program. Keep the labels coming. Debbie Melgar COVE TRAILS The Cove trails committee announces another improvement on one of our trails. At Eagle Flight Park, two things have been done to ease the "horror" of the Big Misery trail that goes down into England Cove. A little bridge has just been built over a hole that was caused by erosion on the upper part of the brown trail shortly before it turns right to make the steep descent downhill. Earlier, the upper part of that trail that went straight down toward Joe Pop Bench was rerouted somewhat to ease the descent Both improvements should be a big help, but please don't forget to carry a trails map down there. Most of the trail markers have pretty much faded away.
On October 9th, in preparation for a later hike down into England Cove, Teresa Targosz was accompanied by Charlie and Gail Massey and Chuck Zimmerman on the western set of trails down there that go to Fork Mountain Cave and Bridge Creek Cave. They didn't quite make it to the latter cave but learned some things that are noteworthy for anyone who wants to hike those trails this year. Most of the painted trail markers have pretty much faded away. Also, the tape flags we put up awhile back are now reduced to small knots where they were tied to the tree trunks and branches -- most of the flag portions are have weathered away. Teresa's crew marked the trail to as far as Fork Mountain Cave with new flags but no farther. Thus, hiking past that point could get a little dicey. The same is probably true for the eastern set of trails that go to the Sinks. We've had no reports on that section, but it's been quite awhile since any marking was done there. Taking along the Eagle Flight Park trail map would be a must for any hikers going down there. Getting lost could be a big problem because there's only one place where you can get back up to topside due to the high bluffs. Happy hiking. The Trails Committee COVE HIKING GROUP The hiking group will meet the 3 rd Saturday of the month, November 20 th, at 8:00 a.m. Bring water and a lunch and a flashlight. This will be a big hike leaving from Eagle Flight Park on East Overlook Road. We will be gone at least 3-4 hours or more if we linger. We will be hiking down to Fork Mountain Cave so we will be taking our time to hike back up. Fork Mountain Cave Fork Mountain is the local name applied to the interfluve between Scuffle Creek and Bridge Creek. The mouth of the cave is at the west end of a large sink, 100 feet wide and 150 feet long, located in thin woods on a limestone bench on the side of the mountain. It is an opening 50 feet wide and 10 feet high. At the back of the entrance room, a chamber 75 feet wide, 50 feet long, and 15 feet wide, is a wide slot, which drops downward vertically for 50 feet over a dry flowstone bank. Dead stalactites hang over the edge of the drop. On the south (left) side of this slot one can climb down through collapsed blocks and crawl along a narrow ledge above the bottom of the pit and continue on into the cave. The main cave extends north for 300 feet through a series of huge domepits 30 feet in diameter and 110 feet high, and south for 75 feet to a breakdown cemented with flowstone. The domes are some of the largest and most spectacular encountered in Tennessee. There will only be a working hike in December. I m looking forward to any help in maintaining the trails then. Thanks. THE 11TH ANNUAL CUMBERLAND COVE COOKIE SWAP AND ORNAMENT EXCHANGE Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 12:00 noon Joanna Walker s Home 839-8441 402 Cumberland Cove Road You are all invited to the 11 th Annual Cumberland Cove Cookie Swap and Ornament Exchange at my home. Come see the house decorated in every room with over one dozen decorated trees. All participating in the cookie swap are asked to bring 3-4 dozen cookies baked by you with 30 copies of the recipe on an index card or half sheet of paper. Don t forget to bring an empty container to take home all your new cookies. Anyone wanting to join in the ornament exchange is asked to bring 2 ornaments. Wrap one but don t wrap the other. One of the participants will go home with a new collection of ornaments. Everyone is asked to bring a small covered dish to share for lunch. You do not have to bring cookies to join in the lunch or ornament exchange. ALL are welcome. Come meet new neighbors, connect with old friends or just come for lunch and have a good time. THANKSGIVING PARTY Saturday November 21 st. Come at 5p.m. and eat at 6 p.m. The Cove will provide the turkeys, dressing and drinks. Bring a side dish, appetizer or dessert to share. When this merges into Main Street, go immediately into the left lane and take the first left onto Roberts Street.
