Issue No. 329 / July August 2014 100th Anniversary of First Air Equestrian Events Australia Norfolk Island Joint Issue Centenary of Military Aviation and Submarines Royal Visit 2014 Red Crab Migration Nostalgic Advertisements Southern Lights

Dear Collectors Welcome to this edition of the Australian Stamp Bulletin in which we recognise more important milestones and anniversaries that have helped shape our culture and heritage. Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic Australia Post All applications for the reproduction of Australian stamps or any correspondence should be made in writing to: Manager Philatelic Australia Post GPO Box 1777 MELBOURNE VIC 3001 mailorder@auspost.com.au The introduction of Air to Australian communities brought them closer together in a way that surpassed that of the recently extended telephone lines. For the cost of a postage stamp, letters could now be sent around the country arriving at destinations within days rather than weeks. The new mail transport method also had an important impact on our communication with friends and families overseas and provided major improvements for business. Air in Australia was pioneered by French aviator and stuntman, Maurice Guillaux, in 1914. We look at our relationship with horses in Australia, from pony club to elite competition, and the dangers facing a regional crustacean and their determination to succeed at all costs. The Christmas Island Red Crab migration that takes place each year is an amazing display. We also reflect on earlier times with Nostalgic Advertising, an issue focusing on poster art. Poster advertising was once the main method of long-term promotion for products and services in Australia. Many of these posters are now regarded as art forms in themselves. This year we mark the proclamation a century ago of Norfolk Island as an external territory with the release of a joint stamp issue. The design of the stamps incorporates the symbolic Norfolk Island Pine, originally found only on the island, which is grown extensively in Australia and can be found in a number of Australian coastal areas. Another stamp issue celebrates the spectacular Southern Lights, mostly seen over the skies of islands in the Southern Ocean, Antarctica and, at times, in southern Tasmania and southerly mainland regions.

French aviator Maurice Guillaux took off from Melbourne Agricultural Grounds on 16 July bound for Sydney, with a cargo of souvenir postcards, official letters and a small number of parcels. Guillaux s load was light, as his Bleriot XI monoplane was only powered by a Gnôme rotary engine of around 50 horse power. The aviator was challenged by inclement weather as he winged his way north, stopping at Seymour, Wangaratta, Albury, Wagga Wagga, Harden, Goulburn and Liverpool before landing to much fanfare at Sydney s Moore Park at 2.50pm on 18 July. The flying time of this two-day aviation feat was just 9¼ hours. Guillaux, an air stuntman during this early period of aviation, was in Australia on a promotional tour. It was an accident of timing that saw him make the historical air mail delivery, as American Eugene Wizard Stone, who was lined up to make the flight, crashed his aircraft and was unable to find a replacement. In Stone s stead, Guillaux flew into postal and aviation history. The stamps are based on artwork held in the National Philatelic Collection. The designs feature two watercolour sketches by Kevin McKay from the development of the 1964 commemorative stamp issue. 1826142 Minisheet $3.30

The Royal couple then visited bushfire affected areas of the Blue Mountains, the RAAF base at Amberley in Brisbane and attended an Easter Sunday service in Sydney. On 22 April Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge travelled to Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park, where they viewed a spectacular sunset after a guided walk around Uluru and a welcome to country, including a traditional Indigenous dance performance. On 23 April they travelled to Adelaide and met young Australians at Northern Sound System, and the following day visited Canberra. On 25 April the couple made a surprise appearance at the Anzac Day dawn service at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. That same afternoon, after a most successful 10-day visit of Australia, Prince William, Catherine and baby George flew out from Canberra. A highlight for many at Taronga Zoo in Sydney was the introduction of Prince George to an inquisitive Bilby named in his honour. 1816142 Minisheet $3.30

Horses in Australia are most closely connected to everyday life through competition and leisure. Outside of horseracing, key equestrian disciplines practised at local, state and national levels include dressage, showjumping and eventing, each of which demonstrates very different sets of skills and ability in both the rider and horse. Dressage translates from the French as training and it requires a high level of control, discipline and precision in both the horse and rider. Eventing is the equestrian equivalent of the triathlon, combining dressage, cross-country and showjumping, and is usually performed over one or three days. The cross-country component measures the endurance of both horse and rider. Originating in Italy in the early 20th century, showjumping tests the dexterity, fitness, training and courage of a horse, and the partnership between horse and rider. Polocrosse originated in Australia in 1939, and of the 10,000 or so players worldwide, 4,000 are Australian. A twist on the more commonly known game of polo, Polocrosse riders use a stick with a netted end instead of a croquet-style. With teams of six players, the sport combines speed, strategy, tactics and toughness. Most riders competing in such English styles of riding are likely to have attended a local pony club in their youth. Through regular rallies, members are instructed in riding, care and management of horses and are given opportunities for equestrian fun and competition. Australia has around 980 clubs, with about 50,000 members.

The first European known to have sighted the island was Captain James Cook, in 1774, on his second voyage to the South Pacific on HMS Resolution. He named it after Mary Howard, Duchess of Norfolk. Originally settled by Polynesians, the island was colonised by Great Britain in 1788 and subsequently used as a British penal colony. In 1856 the inhabitants of the overcrowded Pitcairn Island, including many of the descendants of the original Bounty mutineers, were resettled on Norfolk Island. In 1914 Norfolk Island was proclaimed an external territory of the Commonwealth of Australia. The territory enjoys a substantial degree of self-government, and since 1947 has been responsible for its own postal service and postage stamps. This joint stamp issue features the endemic Norfolk Island Pine, Araucaria heterophylla; a symbol of the island. The Norfolk Island Pine is also widely grown in Australia, particularly in coastal regions, as an ornamental tree. The $1.40 stamp design shows the Old Military Barracks at Kingston on Norfolk Island, built in 1832 during the Second Settlement (1825 1855) and now home to the island s Legislative Assembly. Norfolk Island Pines on Cottesloe Beach in Western Australia are featured in the base-rate 70c design. In 2009 Lonely Planet named Cottesloe Beach the world s second best beach for families.

Australia subsequently became the only British dominion to establish a flying corps, the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) for service during World War I. Australia s first submarines, E-class vessels known as HMAS AE1 and HMAS AE2, were commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in February 1914 and arrived in Sydney on 24 May. During World War I both submarines took part in the occupation of Rabaul, in German New Guinea. On 14 September 1914 Submarine AE1 disappeared off the coast of Cape Gazelle, New Britain, with all hands on-board. Submarine AE2 subsequently supported British-led operations off the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey and on 25 April 1915 was the first British submarine to penetrate the Dardanelles. On 30 April 1915 HMAS AE2 was damaged by a Turkish gunboat and scuttled by her crew. 1829360 PNC $24.95

Release date 12 August 2014 Christmas Island Red Crab Migration The annual Red Crab migration on Christmas Island is listed by naturalists as one of the most spectacular of all natural events. In the lead up to the wet season each year thousands of adult red crabs begin a hazardous migration from the forests to the coastline, where they will breed and spawn. Two deadly obstacles make the journey a hazardous one for the crabs: possible dehydration from the hot sun, and being crushed to death by road traffic. Special crossings help curb the number of crab casualties during the migration season, and traffic can also be prevented from using roads when crossings are taking place. After mating, the males migrate back to the forest, leaving the females to brood their eggs and spawn. After hatching, into free swimming larvae, the eggs grow through several stages in the ocean before they emerge as tiny crabs and make their own way back to the forests. The engaging Little Penguin, promoting the attractions of Phillip Island in Victoria, was one of many commissioned by Victorian Railways in the 1930s. Harper s Empire flour, made by Robert Harper & Co., was a popular household brand throughout the country in the 1920s and 1930s. Perhaps the most famous of all Australian posters is the striking c. 1954 Trans-Australian Airways (TAA) advertisement. The kookaburra was the emblem of the Melbourne-based Jacko Polish Company, for which artist James Northfield designed this poster in the 1930s, and the label from Port Melbourne manufacturer Swallow & Ariell was made in the 1940s for the front of a grocer s tin containing Teddy Bear biscuits. Auroras most commonly occur above a band of high latitudes in each hemisphere, known as the auroral zones. Each auroral zone is centred on the Earth s magnetic poles, and lies between latitudes of approximately 50 and 60. The Southern Lights are less commonly seen than their northern counterpart, as there are comparatively few populated regions under the auroral zone of the Southern Hemisphere. The two main discernible forms of aurora are a diffuse glow, which generally appears towards the poleward horizon, and discrete forms such as arcs and curtains that stretch from east to west, as well as rays that may run upward from the horizon. These forms are shaped by the Earth s magnetic field. When the aurora is sufficiently bright, specific colours may be seen, most commonly green, red and violet. These colours depend on energy of the incoming solar particles, and the type of atmospheric gases they interact with. The photographs in the designs were taken in Tasmania. The minisheet s tête-bêche configuration of stamps will be of interest to collectors. 1832142 Minisheet $4.20
