Lake Kurwongbah RECREATION GUIDE seqwater.com.au

OUR VISION To manage access to recreation opportunities while protecting natural resources and water quality. About Lake Kurwongbah Lake Kurwongbah is located adjacent to the urban populations of Lawnton, Kallangur, Petrie and Warner, and is accessible to much of Brisbane s northern suburbs and the southern urban areas of Moreton Bay Council. The lake is primarily a drinking water supply. Lake Kurwongbah is located in close proximity to Lake Samsonvale and provides a range of outdoor recreation facilities for you to enjoy. RECREATION REVIEW UPDATE Seqwater is committed to providing quality recreation facilities that everyone can enjoy. We wanted to know what the community thought of current facilities and what suggestions you had for the future, so in 2013 we started a full Recreation Review across our assets. We appreciate the efforts of everyone who took the time to participate in our workshops and online surveys. While we want to implement as many ideas as possible, Seqwater must remain committed to protecting our natural environment and minimising the risks to water quality. Changes will be implemented once funding has been secured and all the reviews and environmental impact analysis has been completed. Progress updates, along with details of the feedback received is available at seqwater.com.au/recreview. We value the unique status of the Aboriginal Parties as the original owners and custodians of the land and water around Lake Kurwongbah. 2 3

Protecting our waterways & the environment We all need to do our part to ensure we keep our waterways healthy. It s not just our bushland areas that are threatened by weeds, it is also our wetlands, waterways and lakes that are suffering. Serious aquatic weeds like Water Hyacinth, Salvinia and Cabomba are very invasive and out-compete local species, seriously affecting the local ecology and water quality. Weeds are able to reproduce from even the smallest of fragments or seeds, and trying to control these weeds is time consuming and costly. You can help protect our waterways from weeds by: removing all visible mud and plants from your equipment, boats, trailers, boots, crab pots etc. before leaving eliminating water from all equipment before transporting it anywhere, as the water may contain plant fragments or seeds cleaning and drying anything that came into contact with the water cleaning boats, motors, trailers, fl oats, anchors etc. before leaving. If possible allow the equipment to dry for about fi ve days before entering new waters not releasing or putting plants, fi sh or other animals into a body of water they did not come from. This is an important step to prevent the spread of introduced species of plants and animals into our waterways. To protect our water supply please: leave the facilities as you found them. Do not cause damage to any property, fl ora or fauna place litter in the bins provided leave your pets at home. Dogs and other domestic animals can disturb the wildlife that lives in our natural areas. DOMESTIC PETS The areas around Lake Kurwongbah are home to an abundance of native wildlife, including koalas which have been declared vulnerable by the Australian Government. It is very important that we all take measures to protect these animals and their habitat. Domestic pets and other animals cannot be brought into any of the catchment areas, lakes or recreation areas at Lake Kurwongbah. Dogs are not permitted at Lake Kurwongbah. 4 5

The lake is, however, located within the Moreton Bay Regional Council region which has numerous parks with playground facilities for visitors to enjoy. Boats, Bait and Bathers Boating As a result of the community s feedback, access to Lake Kurwongbah will be changed. Boating Permits At present, no boating permit is required for Lake Kurwongbah. RECREATION REVIEW UPDATE In response to feedback, Lake Kurwongbah will have open public access for paddlecraft. A launch point for paddlecraft will be established at Mick Hanfling Park as soon as funding is secured. As part of our commitment to the environment, washdown facilities for paddlecraft will be installed to help prevent the spread of aquatic weeds. Please note that only non-motorised craft will be permitted on the lake. Waterskiing, jet skiing, wakeboarding and tubing will not be permitted. A single boating permit scheme is being considered for all Seqwater lakes. A decision will not be made until the end of the recreation review process in October 2014. Progress updates will be available at seqwater.com.au/recreview. 8 9

Fishing Shore line fi shing can be carried out along the shore of designated recreation areas as follows: Mick Hanfling Park (Torrens Road, Petrie) Lake Kurwongbah Day Use area (Dayboro Road, Petrie) Fishing from paddlecraft will be available once a launch/retrieval point is established. Also, multi-use trails will be established at Lake Samsonvale as a result of community feedback through the recreation review process. Please be courteous to our neighbours. Much of the land surrounding the lake is private property. Accessing private land to fi sh is not permitted. The lake is home to an abundance of wildlife. It s very important to ensure that all rubbish, especially fi shing line and hooks, is disposed of properly to avoid serious harm to wildlife. Fishing Permits A fi shing permit is not currently required for Lake Kurwongbah. Swimming There are no designated swimming areas at Lake Kurwongbah. The lake is located within the Moreton Bay Regional Council area where there are a number of Council run aquatic centres for visitors to enjoy. 10 11
