About the institute PGIMER The PGIMER owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the erstwhile Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished medical educationists of the then combined state of Punjab, supported by the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, who inaugurated the institute in 1962. The 2200 bedded hospital attached to the institute is named the Nehru Hospital. The Institute was originally under the Government of undivided Punjab. After the reorganization of the state, the administrative control of the institute passed on to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966. The Institute was declared as the Institute of Excellence and became an autonomous body under the Act of Parliament in 1967, functioning under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Institute imparts doctoral and post-doctoral training to medical and non-medical graduates in 52 medical and surgical specialties in terms of its residency programs leading to MD, MS, DM, MCh and PhD degrees. The National Institute of Paramedical Sciences and National Institute of Nursing Education are associated training institutes imparting BSc (Medical Laboratory Technology), MSc (Medical Laboratory Technology) and BSc and MSc Nursing degrees. Nehru Hospital attached to the Institute is a tertiary care hospital catering to approximately 10,000 patients in the outdoor clinics and 4000-5000 in the emergency everyday besides indoor patients from all over India and abroad also. About City Beautiful Chandigarh: Chandigarh is a well-planned city in India, with architecture which is worldrenowned, and a quality of life, which is unparalleled. As the common capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana, and the Union Territory, Chandigarh is a prestigious city. The face of modern India, Chandigarh, is the manifestation of a dream that Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru envisaged and French architect Le Corbusier executed. Serenity and a city are two diametrically opposite concepts, which however, get belied in the 'City Beautiful'. Chandigarh is a rare epitome of modernization co-existing with nature's preservation. It is here that the trees and plants are as much a part of the construction plans as the buildings and the roads. India s first planned city, is a rich, prosperous, spic and span, green city rightly called THE CITY BEAUTIFUL. Chandigarh enjoys an extreme climate with hot summers and chilly winters, however the month of March brings pleasant weather. City is well connected through Air, Rail and Road routes and is one of the most visited cities by National and International travelers. Rock garden, Rose garden, Sukhna lake, City center and Capitol Complex are few attraction points of the city beautiful.
