Photo by Janice Verrastro. President s Letter by David Liebschutz Friends, Our riding season is in full swing this month with a packed calendar of clubs rides and other activities such as the annual Tour de Cure. Thanks to all of you who lead rides and are involved in helping battle diabetes through riding the Tour or sponsoring someone who is. Although many of us have been riding for several months given the mild winter, on May 7th we began the official MHCC calendar with a new event, a spring kick-off ride from Henry Hudson Park in Bethlehem. Thirty-five riders in three different groups, led by Dave Render, Howie Diamond and Andy Swartz, enjoyed a beautiful spring day and a delicious potluck lunch afterwards. Two of the rides got to go along the new Albany to Voorheesville Rail Trail. Thanks to MHCC Board Member Dan Craven for coordinating the logistics, and to MHCC Treasurer Janice Verrastro and Board Members Jude Sagor and Becky Lazorchak for their support of the event as well. Thanks also to Steven LeBoyer and Mark Purdy from Savile Road for providing pre-ride adjustments and support. We hope to expand this event for next year, so let me know if there are suggestions for how best to do so. As noted last month, the board has been busy with several other initiatives. The new club jersey which publicizes the effort to get a 3-foot rule in New York as well as our annual century ride has been a huge success! Seventytwo people have pre-ordered jerseys which will be available at the end of June. In addition, we ordered ten extra jerseys for those who didn t get a chance to order them before the May 8th deadline and will have them for sale at local bike shops. Kudos to MHCC Vice President Howie Diamond for all of his hard work coordinating the design and production of these jerseys. Howie will be putting together some rides to promote the jerseys and the 3-foot issue this summer, and we have been working with the New York Bicycle Coalition to schedule a ride in July to further promote the issue. More information about both initiatives will be available on the Facebook page and the club web site. Lastly, registration for this year s MHCC Century Ride (September 10 and 11) has gone live, and we are encouraging as many people as possible to register through the Bike Reg web site: www.bikereg.com/mhcccenturyweekend. Remember, if you volunteer to work at the Century Ride one day you get to ride the other day free. Contact Century Chair Jonathan Benn or Volunteer Coordinator Jude Sagor if you are interested in helping. Thanks for being part of MHCC and enjoy your rides. CELL: 518-469-2110. 9:30AM, ROAD CASUAL (11-13 MPH/ROLLING) 26.2 MILES Helderberg Hudson Rail Trail: Bethlehem Waterfront This is the third outing in a new series of rides that should be good for beginners, families and anyone interested in an ongoing project to expand local bike paths. We will explore several of the components of Bethlehem s accessible waterfront, as the Town begins a major review of its Waterfront Revitalization Program. The ride will begin at the eastern end of the trail. We will ride on the newly paved section of the trail for a distance of 5.1 miles, reaching the Albany trail head on South Pearl Street. The second component of the tour begins with a short ride to a place you ve likely never been: the Bethlehem portion of the Port of Albany. You ll see industry (safely behind fences), large watercraft and the confluence of the Normans Kill and the Hudson River. We continue on down River Road, through the nicely rideable waterfront residential areas, and visit Bethlehem s two green gems: Moh-He-Con-Nuck Nature Preserve and Henry Hudson Park (including views of some of the oldest houses in the town). Then a return to the trail head, with a stop to check out a promontory offering a spectacular view of Beacon Island and the waterfront north and south, and a ride along little-known Retreat House Road. All riding is on paved surfaces. There will be frequent stops for commentary and photos. Bring a camera. Rain start cancels. START: Slingerlands parking lot, Helderberg Hudson Rail Trail, Grove Street and Kenwood Avenue (near Slingerlands Fire House), Slingerlands, NY.
