The spirit of the creator is clearly seen in the created. Janet Borel has enjoyed knitting, sewing and quilting since she was young, but after taking a beginning weaving class in the mid-1980s, she was hooked! As a member of the Baltimore Weavers Guild Janet learned to make felt and dye fibers. Janet began teaching at New Hope Camp in 2009. She says, It is always amazing to me how the children enjoy the challenge of working with their hands and creating something special. Christopher Neil Adkins is a native of Hillsborough, NC. He has distinguished himself as one of the most talented young guitarists of his generation. As a performer, he has received multiple awards in both regional and international guitar competitions. Christopher has performed with including: Sergio and Odair Assad, David Russell, Jason Vieaux, Paul Galbraith and Johannes Möllern. He is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Jim Adams is an internationally recognized artist with a broad experience in varied materials and processes. He has been an instructor, resident artist and demonstrator at Penland School of Craft, Center For Documentary Studies at Duke and the Burren College of Art in Ireland. He continues to teach from his studio in Hillsborough, NC and resides at New Hope Camp where he is also employed as the Program Director. Mark of the Maker is our theme for summer camp 2018. Each of the nine weeks we will be exploring art, craft, science and nature while we play and create together in the beautiful setting of New Hope Camp and Conference Center. Drawing, Painting, Sculpting, Pottery, Wood Working, Weaving, Music, Writing, Story Telling and Black Smithing will all be part of the summer art scene at camp. Through the art and craft experience each camper will have opportunities to learn about themselves, their peers and the environment as they express their individual experiences. Self awareness and confidence are the goals as campers explore the Mark of the Maker and make their own mark in the community they are engaged in! We will have a different visiting artist each week to introduce campers to new materials and processes as they learn to Think Through Art And Craft. The experiences campers have on the sports field, water front and nature will be the foundation for ideas and inspiration in the art and craft studio! John Claude Bemis is an award-winning author, musician, and educator. His novels include The Wooden Prince and Lord of Monsters, the first two books in the Out of Abaton series (Disney-Hyperion) and the Clockwork Dark trilogy (Random House), among others. John was chosen as North Carolina s Piedmont Laureate for Children s Literature. He lives with his wife and daughter in Hillsborough, NC. Walt Beckwith and Al Townsend will be returning as visiting artists in the wood shop! Walt is a life-long woodworker and has been teaching a Week of Woodworking at Camp New Hope for the last 7 years. Projects we will work on are age-related and many are adaptations of Roberto Lou Ma s action animals. The Walking Rhinos and Climbing Orangutans are yearly favorites. To read more about these and other artists that will be joining us this summer and catch up with updates visit www.newhopeccc.org
