UPDATED MARCH 18, 1913 The Putmans Laurens County South Carolina To Choctaw County Mississippi Four sons of James Putman and Elizabeth Hughes came to Mississippi in the late 1850s. James was a son of William Putman and Mary Mitchell Putman of Laurens County South Carolina. These sons were: William Isaac Putman I m going out on a limb here, but he fits in perfectly. He was born in 1828 in Laurens County. He appears in the 1850 census of Choctaw County Mississippi living with Seaborn and Mary PUTMAN Garrett from South Carolina. Mary is a Putman, a daughter of William Putman and Mary Mitchell and his father James sister. Her sister Francis PUTMAN married Osborn Garrett and is also living in that area. He married Mary Ann Garrett in Mississippi. He served in the Civil War and was captured at Fort Donelson and died in a Union Prison Camp at Camp Morton, Indiana. His wife Mary then married Harvey P. Hosmer from Ohio in 1875 in Yazoo County Mississippi. They lived in Holmes County Mississippi. The children were: GEORGE DANIEL PUTMAN born in 1853. He married Mary Jane Raney in Yazoo County January 4, 1883. They are in Holmes County in 1900 with a bunch of kids all listed by just initials. JAMES SIMEON PUTMAN born in 1855. He is in Holmes County in 1880 with a wife named Frances, and in 1900 married to a Mary Ann. As of 1900, the kids were: E. O. Putman a daughter born in 1880. James Putman born in 1881. Walter Putman born in 1883. May Putman born in 1887. Martha Putman born in 1887. Lettie Putman born in 1891. J. Putman a daughter born in 1893. Josephine Putman born in 1895. L. M. Putman a son born in 1899. JOHN PUTMAN born in 1856. He is in Madison County in 1900 through 1910 with a wife named Frances (Fanny), and these children. She died June 16, 1917 and in 1920 he had a younger wife Annie. John died October 25, 1925. Kate Putman born in 1884.

James Putman born in 1887. He married Missouri Jeffcoat. He died in Madison County October 24, 1970 and Missouri died November 6, 1987. Harvey Hosmer Putman born in 1890.

Josie M. Putman born in 1892. Wilemina Putman born in 1894 and died March 24, 1920. Ruby E. Putman born in 1897. Cordelia Putman born in 1900. MARTHA C. PUTMAN born in 1858. Charles P. Putman Charles was born in Laurens County South Carolina in June 1834. His wife was Essence Jane Rush. She was born in Mississippi in 1836. She died in Choctaw County November 12, 1905. He died there October 4, 1910. They are shown in the 1860 census of Choctaw County and in 1880 in Attala County. In 1900 he is widowed at age 65 and living with Charlie Junior. Their children listed were: JAMES C. PUTMAN born in 1856. I do not find him after the 1860 census. He married Elizabeth P. Jones on November 23, 1882. In the 1900 and 1910 census of Choctaw County she was a widow with these children: Maude Putman born in November 1883. Jonathan James Putman born February 26, 1886. In 1910 he has a wife named Leona and a son. His mother Lizzie, then 56, was with him. I find him next in Choctaw County in 1940 with a second son and his mother Lizzie 86 is with him then too. Her last name is then Shaw so she remarried at some stage and was widowed again. The sons were: Andrew J. Putman born in April 1908. He is married to Mae and is in Choctaw County along with his folks in 1940. Otis Putman born in 1911 and with the folks in Choctaw County in 1940. Ora M. Putman born July 1887. JOHNSON P. PUTMAN born in 1858 in Choctaw County. He was married three times, first to Louisa Rich in 1878 or 79. Louisa died in childbirth. He married Caroline Lawrence April 11, 1896. He then married Lou Sledge after 1900. He is in jail in the1900 census and then went to Arkansas to look for land. Some of his children are with his brothers in the 1900 census, some in jail with him. He returned and took his family to Arkansas and died in 1918 in Horse Shoe Lake, Arkansas. The children were: Joseph Putman born in August 1879. He married three times: Ida Tucker, Rosa Cunningham and to Myrtle Frownfetter in 1943. He is shown with Ida in the 1900 census of Choctaw County. In 1910 he is in Lonoke County Arkansas with Rosa. In 1920, they are in Grant County Arkansas. He died in Dewitt, Arkansas on April 6, 1946. Robert Putman born in 1881. In 1910 he is in Lonoke County with a wife named Lillie. Mildred Putman born in June 1887. She married a Roseman. Hattie Putman born in March 1890. She married Alex E. Morrow. Callie Lou Putman born August 11, 1892. She married George Mitchell Johnson in Arkansas on November 14, 1909. She died in Holly Springs, Mississippi on May 12, 1973.

Emma Putman born June 24, 1895. She married William Hudson Taylor in Coy, Arkansas on October 28, 1911. MARGARET PUTMAN born in 1861. She married J. B. Polk March 28, 1884.

MARY ELIZABETH PUTMAN born in August 1863. She married James Boyd on January 5, 1887. In 1900, they had a son: Samuel W. Boyd born in November 1892. CHARLES W. PUTMAN JR. born in 1867. Single in 1900 at home. In 1910 he is in Sunflower County Mississippi with his wife Lena Cannon born in Louisiana. In 1920 he is in Lee County Arkansas with a new wife Nellie St. John born in Arkansas. Charles did some sharecropping in Moro, Lee County. Charles died in Lee County in the mid 1920s. Nellie then married Othel McRoy there in the early 1930s. The children were: Lucille Putman was born July 18, 1918. She married J. L. Mayes, a train engineer. She died May 10, 1936. Eloise Putman was born March 23, 1920 and died in 1959. She married John Dubach in 1947. Mary Lee Putman was born in 1921. She married Jim Eslick in 1939. He died in 1953, and she married Ira Daniel Cripe in 1954. She was living in Kansas as of 2005. Noah Fletcher Putman was born November 26, 1922. He was married three times and lived mostly in Arkansas, but was in Kansas for a while. I don t have information on his first wife except her name was Evelyn. His second wife was Roberta Hughes they were married in Colorado and lived in Kansas. He lastly married Aileen Lydia Mary Murphy on June 28, 1996. He died in Holiday Island, Carroll County Arkansas May 20, 2008. Aileen was born July 26, 1915 in Manhattan, Kansas and died in Holiday Island December 20, 2009. Samantha Marie Putman was born May 12, 1924 in Lee County and died in 2002 near Memphis, Tennessee. She married Albert Holliday September 3, 1944. Mavis Fern Putman born September 15, 1925 in Moro, Bradley County Arkansas. She married Sedgwick Boorem November 15, 1943 in Marianna, Lee County Arkansas. A relative says they had a granddaughter Mika Boorem who became an actress and was Mel Gibson s daughter in The Patriots and in Touched by Angels and more. MARIETTA E. PUTMAN born in 1871. She married Wesley Jenkins on October 11, 1889. GEORGE WHITFIELD PUTMAN born July 16, 1874. He married Etta Evergreen Scroggins on March 29, 1896 and in 1900 they were in Choctaw County and had two daughters. In 1910 and 1920 they are in Lee County Arkansas. In 1930, he is widowed and living in Hickory Plain, Prairie County Arkansas. George was born in Mississippi July 16, 1874 and died in White County Arkansas August 9, 1961. Etta was born in Mississippi January 29, 1879 and died in Harmony, Arkansas September 30, 1926. Children were: Vinia (Lavinia) Putman born in August 1897. Ruth Rita Putman born October 17, 1899 and died May 16, 1992 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She married Arthur Columbus Camp about 1916. He was previously married to Paralee Riddle. He was born April 10, 1888 and died April 16, 1970. They lived in Moro, Lee County Arkansas. They had four children: Margaree Camp born April 18, 1918 and died unmarried September 12, 1980. Eugene Harold Camp He married Marjorie Duncan. They lived in Dallas, Texas. Myrtle Frances Camp born March 20, 1919. She married Herman Wilburn McClure.

Viola LaVerne Camp married W. H. Price and then Rayburn Fowler. Viola died in September 1998. Elgie Putman born in 1902. In 1920 he is living in a 4-C Camp in Lee County. In 1930 he is in Hickory Plain, Prairie County and is married to Olita Duke. They are in Lonoke County Arkansas in 1940 with three kids. He is working on public roads for the W.P.A. Elmer Putman born in 1905. In 1930 he is married to Pauline Cox and living with his father in Prairie County. They were married in Prairie County Arkansas January 24, 1930. Ruby Putman born in 1907. The last child born in Mississippi. She married Bill Sanders. Ruby died in 1994. Nellie Putman born in 1910 in Arkansas. Henry Elbert Putman born in Arkansas September 26, 1912 and died in White County Arkansas March 2, 1980. He married Martha Ann Busbea. They had a son: Harold Leon Putman born March 13, 1940 and died July 26, 1952. Homer Cecil Putman born October 12, 1916 and died in White County Arkansas December 22, 1977. He married Helen Theone Dailey. She was born January 8, 1920 and died in McRae White County on November 5, 2002. She was a daughter of William Rig Dailey and Denise Jane Gage. Viola Putman born in late 1919. SARAH (SALLIE) PUTMAN born in July 1880. Single and at home in 1900. In 1930 she is in Hickory Plain, Prairie County Arkansas near her brother George Whitfield Putman. At that time she is married to Robert Griffin and they are taking care of her brother Charles youngest daughter, Samie. She and Robert were there in 1920. SUSAN PUTMAN born in 1882. Single and at home in 1900. CLARA PUTMAN born in July 1883. She is living with James Boyd as a sister in law. James married her sister Mary Elizabeth Putman. HARIETT (Hattie) PUTMAN born in 1890 and living at home in 1900. CALLIE PUTMAN born in 1892 and at home in 1900. George Putman George was born in South Carolina in 1831. He is single in 1860 and then served in the Confederate Army. I do not find him in 1870 or 1880 so assume that he was killed in the fighting. John Putman John was born in Laurens County South Carolina in 1837. He is single in 1860. I believe he was actually widowed. If this is the case, then he had one son in his first marriage, John D. who was age 5 in 1860 and living with relatives, John and Annie Knight. He married Nancy Jane Willows in Laurens County September 10, 1860. In 1870 and 1880 he and Nancy are in Choctaw County with a bunch of kids. I do not find them in 1900, but the children are all still there.

The children were: JAMES W. PUTMAN born July 7, 1861. In 1900 his wife is Martha Jane Murphy, and they had these children. She was born in Mississippi April 6, 1855 and died in Johnson County Texas September 19, 1918. They were married in 1881. She was with him in 1900 in Choctaw County and in 1910 in Johnson County Texas. In 1920 he is a widower, age 58, in Johnson County Texas. His son William is living with him, single also. He is still there in 1930 at age 69. He died March 27, 1937. Charles Edgar Putman born May 28, 1882. He is in Johnson County Texas in 1910 and 1920 with his wife Eva Mae Waldrop born in Kingston, Georgia about 1883. Their children were: Charles Edgar Putman Junior born July 9, 1911. He married Edna Bandy June 10, 1938. She is a daughter of George Otis Bandy and Edith Marion Love and was born July 16, 1913 and died in Irving, Texas July 24, 2009. Charlie died in Cleburne, Johnson County April 29, 1975. They had Charles Edgar III on July 22, 1941. William Ralph Putman born September 13, 1913. He married Catherine Clark. Mary Frances Putman born December 7, 1918. She married Ray Meadows. Jack Norris Putman born February 11, 1924. He married Dora Maud Graham. Madonna May Putman born February 7, 1884 and died April 26, 1947. She married Preston Alexander King. He was born March 11, 1881 and died July 26, 1961. They had: Elmer L. King born in Parker County Texas November 14, 1905 and died there in Weatherford February 21, 1997. His wife was Virginia. Nova Lanette King born December 31, 1906 and died in Fort Worth, Texas April 26, 1976. She married Clyde Lee Wallis about 1925. Carl King born January 8, 1927 and died May 1, 1946. Martha Mattie Putman born in May 1887. William Earl Putman born August 10, 1893. He is in Johnson County Texas in 1920 and married Dollye Maupin May 23, 1925. They are there in 1930. She was a daughter of W. Coleman and Frances L. Maupin and was born July 9, 1904 and died in Joshua, Johnson County November 15, 1992. Willie died in Joshua April 26, 1973. They were in Siskiyou County California in 1942 when he registered for the draft at age 48. Hattie Putman born in April 1895. MARY ELIZABETH PUTMAN born March 25, 1865. She married William Estes Knight on December 26, 1887 here in Choctaw County. She died in Choctaw County March 14, 1907. William later married her sister Martha Ola Putman on April 3, 1908. They had: Tommy Knight born in December 1888. Jimmie Knight born in February 1892. She married James Thomas Rosamond. Virginia Lee Knight born July 14, 1897 and died September 17, 1979. She married William Richard Rosamond on June 20, 1912. He was born December 26, 1887 and died September 19, 1976. They had 11 children. Mary Knight born January 15, 1900 and died March 1, 1984. She married William Wesley Wilson. He was born January 16, 1884 and died October 27, 1969. They had three sons, Wesley Ethel Wilson, James Earl Wilson and Thomas Melvin Wilson. MARTHA OLA PUTMAN born in 1865. She married Willard Ward September 25, 1884. She later married William Estes Knight who was married to her sister Betty before she died in 1907. They were married April 3, 1908. They had five more children:

Cleo Knight born May 31, 1908 and died in Montgomery County Mississippi October 11, 2004. Amanda E. Knight born August 25, 1910 and died June 18, 1911. Omega Knight born November 10, 1914 and died April 8, 1999. Audre Ola Knight born October 10, 1919. She married George Sylvester Tackett March 31, 1937. She died April 1, 2003 Lonnie Knight born January 27, 1923 and died in Choctaw County May 31, 1981. OSCAR PUTMAN born in 1868. JOHN D. PUTMAN born August 25, 1869. I do not find in 1880. In 1900 they are in Prairie County Arkansas. In 1910 through 1930, he is in Choctaw County Mississippi with his wife Amanda Eisland, born in 1866 in Mississippi, and these children. John died November 19, 1933. I 1940 Amanda was living with her married daughter Sylvia Kitchens. The children were: Arthur Earl Putman born in 1890 in Mississippi. He is still unmarried and at home with his folks in 1930. Minnie G. Putman born in 1892 in Mississippi. She is married by 1920. Daisy J. Putman born in 1897 in Arkansas. In 1920, she was back home and her last name was Borrontime or some such. A widow I guess. Joseph F. Putman born in July 1899. Missing in 1910. Bertha Sylvia Putman born in 1906 in Mississippi. She married Chester Kitchens and was gone by 1930. In 1940 her mom was with her and her family. Eugene Minuard Putman born March 4, 1908. In 1930 he has a wife Myrtle Miller 4 years younger than he is. They were married in 1928 and have a son Charles 1 year old in 1930. Myrtle was born September 7, 1911 and died November 6, 1982. Minuard died here September 13, 1974. JOSIE PUTMAN born in 1870.

ELIJAH PUTMAN born in 1873. He might be the Eula Putman found in 1910 in Holmes County Mississippi. If so, look at the census date for his family. I am not at all sure, so am not listing them here. ANDREW BERNARD PUTMAN born January 1, 1878 and died June 9, 1932. In 1900 he is married to Elizabeth Pace and is in Bankston, Choctaw County. He married Sarah Elizabeth Pace January 31, 1900. She was born April 8, 1877 and died July 1, 1969. They are here through 1930 and for the rest of their lives. Elizabeth is still around in 1940 living with her married daughter Pearl. They had these children: William Henry Putman born January 1, 1901 and died February 19, 1968. He is married to Ronnie Pittman in 1920 and on in Choctaw County. Ronnie was born March 31, 1900 and died April 22, 1957. As of 1930 they had: Lucille Nora Putman born in 1920. Ellen L. Putman a daughter born in 1922. William Edgar Putman was born July 30, 1924 and died in Montgomery County Mississippi September 19, 1986. He married Mary Louise Squires. She was born February 12, 1924 and died in Montgomery County February 11, 1969. May Putman born in 1904. She married James E. Dampeau in 1925 and was next to or living with her folks in 1930. John Harvey Putman born April 2, 1907 and died April 25, 1994. He married Susan Vera Bright in 1927 and lived by his folks in 1930. Susan was born March 8, 1911 and died in Lawrence County on May 30, 2002. Both are buried in Choctaw County. Pearl Putman born in 1912. She married Clifton McWharter. Charles Andrew Putman born August 24, 1914. He was still at home in 1930. He married Mattie Lou Green. She was born July 17, 1915 and died in Montgomery County September 24, 2000. Charlie died August 24, 1987.
