CULTURAL SITES EXPERIENCE OUR VIBRANT CULTURE AS YOU LEARN OUR PAST, FEEL OUR PASSION AND TAP YOUR FEET TO THE BEAT OF THE DRUM. CHOCTAW NATION CAPITOL / TVSHKA HOMMA Tvshka Homma is the Capitol of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, the 3rd largest Native American tribe in the U.S. The Choctaw Capitol Building is a historic site and welcomes visitors to their museum and gift shop, where you can purchase handmade items from Choctaw Artisans. Located at the front entrance of the Capitol Building, stands a large statue of the Red Warrior, which is what the name Tvshka Homma, means in the Choctaw Language. A Choctaw war veterans memorial is located on the grounds and you ll find a special tribute to the famous Choctaw Code Talkers of World War I and II. The Chief of the Choctaw Nation and the entire Tribe host their annual Labor Day Festival on the Tvshka Homma Grounds each fall, where the Choctaw Culture comes alive with art, pow wows, music, stickball, the Choctaw princess pageant and much more. From temper be it known that we are warm in the fields of battle and cool in the hours of debate. Chief Pushmataha DOAKSVILLE / FORT TOWSON Established in the early 1820 s, this once thriving town, with protection from nearby Fort Towson, was once the capital of the Choctaw Nation. It was also the location of historic events like the Chickasaw and Choctaw land agreement, called the Treaty of Doaksville and the surrender of Confederate General Stand Watie. The ruins of Doaksville are currently under management by Fort Towson Historic Site. BOGGY DEPOT / ATOKA After their removal by the United States government from Mississippi and Alabama in the 1830 s, the depot was founded by the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes in 1837, This depot became a major trading center on the Texas Road and the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Missouri and San Francisco. Choctaw Chief Allen Wright and Reverend Cyrus Kingsbury are buried in the Boggy Depot Cemetery. FORT WASHITA / DURANT Built in 1842, in what was Choctaw Territory at the time, the fort s purpose was to protect the Choctaw and Chickasaw Tribes from the Plains Indians. The site was once occupied by Confederate troops in 1861 and General Douglas Cooper lived the remainder of his life there. Fort Washita, located in Durant, is a National Historic Landmark and currently managed by the Chickasaw Nation. SPIRO MOUNDS / SPIRO Discovered during the Great Depression in the 1930 s, archaeologists believe there has been human activity at this site for at least 8000 years. This archaeological site is one of the most important Native American cultural resources and stretches 80 acres and borders the Arkansas River. The mounds are currently under the Oklahoma Historical Society and the only archaeological site in Oklahoma available to the public. WHEELOCK ACADEMY / MILLERTON Established in 1832 by Alfred Wright, this school was a continuation of Wright s missionary work with the Choctaws in Mississippi. During the Civil War, the school was burned down and rebuilt by the Choctaw Nation in 1880. Seven of the 18 buildings remain at this national historic site that is under management of the Choctaw Nation. 6 Choctaw Nation Capitol Museum / Tvshka Homma 7
