Future Leaders Day Speakers Master of Ceremonies - Scotty Sumo Stevenson Chef Thomas Barta Scotty Sumo Stevenson is a SKY Sport Rugby Commentator and Editor of SKY Sport the Magazine. His humorous style has made him one of the most popular media personalities in New Zealand. Like many of us, Scotty made a start working in bars, before moving into the advertising world. It was apparent that advertising was not going to work, however, his talent as a voice over was soon recognised. Rugby has been his passion and he continues to work as a commentator, reporter and presenter for New Zealand s national obsession. He has also covered the Olympic Games, Olympic Winter Games and Commonwealth Games. Scotty was appointed Editor of SKY Sport - The Magazine in 2011, and was named New Zealand Magazine Sport Feature Writer of the Year in 2012. Thomas Barta is a multi-venue executive chef, who has worked in one of the busiest Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK, with acclaimed chef Gordon Ramsay. Originally from Eastern Europe, Thomas did not have a clue about fine dining or a Michelin star. At the end of his apprenticeship, his head chef opened his eyes to the flavours and presentation of Il Postale, a Michelin starred restaurant in Umbria. It was here that he set his goals high, and five years later found himself working with Gordon Ramsay. This experience made him the chef he is today; giving him strength, knowledge, strong leadership, the sense of flavours and many things that can t even be described. His message is to never give up your dreams; if you want something you need to work hard for it and make it happen.

Future Leaders Day Speakers Paul Wilson Trent Yeo Sianatu Lotoaso Chomp s Managing Director Paul Wilson, comes from a background of over 30 years in the hospitality industry, including managing and owning various establishments in Queenstown. Paul is passionate about engaging with people in the hospitality industry, and enjoys the challenges and rewards the industry brings. Executive Director of Ziptrek Ecotours Queenstown Trent Yeo describes himself as a happy generalist. A proud New Zealand resident, Trent grew up in Australia as a Chinese Malaysian Australian, spent time in Asia and has business partners that are Canadian. Trent is a strong advocate of sustainability in tourism; particularly education in the outdoors. I see this as a vocal and vital role in the business of adventure tourism. The serious nature of fun is the catalyst for anchored and meaningful outdoor experiences that build empathy with the natural world, Trent says. Sianatu Lotoaso is the in-house solicitor at Hospitality New Zealand. She previously worked at a national law firm in Wellington before making the move to in-house in 2016 to try her hand at the settlement end of disputes, as opposed to Court. She has experience in a broad range of matters in the courts, mediation and on non-contentious matters. Sianatu enjoys the challenges that the highly-regulated hospitality industry presents and resolving problems in a sensible and practical way.

Future Leaders Day Young Guns Panel John Hellebrekers - Chair Managing Director, Joylab Hospitality NZ Board Member Shaun Bates Shaun Bates is the co-director and general manager for Indigo Restaurant and Bar. Indigo is a multi-award-winning fine dining restaurant and bar and has one of the largest beverage collections in the country, with over 800 Whiskies and 100 Gins. They aim to give their diners the ultimate dining experience by providing fresh, local ingredients for their dishes and impeccable service. Shaun currently holds several positions on numerous boards. He is President of the Hawke s Bay Branch for Hospitality New Zealand and one of the youngest Presidents for a Branch in New Zealand. He s also a board member of the Napier In The City Business Association. Chad Johnston A professional builder by trade, Chad stumbled into hospitality by chance when he accepted a role as Food and Beverage attendant in Perth. He discovered an unexpected passion for this dynamic industry and was motivated to apply for a corporate cadetship with Rydges. After the cadetship, Chad worked across multiple departments including as a duty manager, F&B supervisor and front office manager. An opportunity arose to return to Wellington as the rooms division manager at Rydges, followed by a promotion to executive assistant manager. Chad was recently appointed to the position of general manager and has moved across to Rydges Wellington Airport where he is responsible for opening and positioning the hotel. Chad gathers his inspiration from the in-house guests he meets on a daily basis and his team, many of whom he has forged friendships with. He is a highly engaged manager who creates a fun environment, combined with an uncompromising professional ethos. Chad s advice to the future leaders of the industry is to enjoy the varied environment of this trade, embrace change and have loads of fun while doing it. Mat Lear In his spare time, Shaun is a volunteer firefighter for the Napier Fire Brigade and has also recently become a Junior Justice of the Peace. Mat is owner/operator of 4 successful hospitality venues across Wellington. Together with his wife Tracey and business partners Trinity Group, he has helped create and develop brands such as Courtenay place institution El Horno, summer hotspot the Arborist Rooftop Bar and Eatery, more recently South Pacific inspired eatery and bar Lulu (finalist for Best Restaurant in the HNZ Awards for Excellence) and burger joint Boom Burger As a recipient of the 2017 HNZ Up & Coming Entrepreneur award, Mat thrives on identifying new trends in the market and adapting them to create environments and experiences. Mat holds two degrees from Victoria University, is a keen outdoorsman and accomplished musician.
