Japanese Traditional Music Program Children s Music Summer Camp Program Information June 25 June 29, 2018 9:00am 4:00pm Tuition Fee: $250 Dear Morikami Music Summer Campers, We at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens look forward to having you join us for a fun, creative and educational program this summer. The following is all the information you will need to have a great experience with us. The program includes three different workshops for three age groups: Group A: Grades 3 5 Group B: Grades 6 8 Group C: Grades 9-12 Students will have sessions: a) Japanese culture, b) 13-string koto and c) shakuhachi d) taiko with professional musicians, Joseph Amato and Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, and members of Fushu Daiko Taiko group. All instruments and sheet music will be provided for use in the workshop. The curriculum will allow students to have both practical and knowledge-based (theoretical/historical) classes. The knowledge-based component is a Japanese culture class, with topics that include the following: Introduction to Japanese language and culture - (Students will learn basic phrases, kanji numbers to read the music sheet, etc.) Introduction to the history of Japanese traditional music Craft project: Make a koto practice board and shakuhachi fingering tube to take home for practicing finger techniques and songs Learn about kimono culture and its history. The students will learn how to wear a kimono for their recital. Introduction to Japanese language and culture - (Using Morikami s exhibit, Japan Through the Eyes of a Child, the students will tour and learn about Japan s geography, schools, home life in Japan, and etc.) Creating a variety of Japanese craft projects
Learning Japanese folk songs and dances The practical classes include Japanese music instrument instruction. Dr. Amato will lead the basic koto workshops, teaching the students how to use tsume (finger plectrums), how to read Japanese musical notation and how to execute basic koto performance techniques through simple compositions. Professor Blasdel will lead the shakuhachi workshops, teaching the students proper breathing, posture, how to execute simple long notes and how to read Japanese traditional music notation. He will also teach the students a short shakuhachi piece. Check-In (8:30a.m. to 9:00 a.m.) On the FIRST DAY, ALL children are expected to be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian when checking-in with the camp coordinator in the museum lobby. Each day after, all children under the age of 14, are expected to be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian when checking-in with the camp coordinator. o Children 14 and older are able to sign themselves in and out of camp on their own. A child may participate in the Children s Music Summer Camp Program only when online registration is complete, camp fees are processed and the following camp forms are turned in: Camper Conduct Agreement Camp Policy & Emergency Form Parent Photo Release Form Check-Out (12:30p.m. to 1:00p.m.) The parent or guardian that picks up the camper will be required to show Photo ID and sign the logbook with the camp coordinator in the museum lobby. Only adults on the Camp Policy and Emergency Information Form will be permitted to check-out a camper. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS in order to ensure the safety of your camper. *Please NOTE there will be NO Before or After care available for your campers, so please be timely in your drop-offs and pick-ups. Cancellation / No Show As this is a short program, absences, withdrawals, no-shows or dismissals will not be eligible for refunds, transfers or prorating. What to Bring / Wear ALL Remaining Forms o On the first day, please bring all remaining forms and turn them in when you check-in. Snack(s) / Lunch o SNACK - We will provide during the 10:00am 10:30am break: water or juice and a simple snack. If your child has any dietary restrictions or snack preferences, please have them bring a snack with them. Due to possible allergies we will be a peanut-free camp, so please be sure not to send any, peanuts, peanut butter or other peanut-related food with your camper. o LUNCH - Your camper is welcome to bring a bag lunch and eat it at 12:30pm when camp finishes for the day. Feel free to enjoy lunch together at our museum café when you pick up your camper. There is NO refrigeration or microwave available. Please keep that in mind when making their lunch. Clothing o Make sure your campers wear comfortable clothing for indoors. Please note: Our theater is quite cold so we suggest your camper brings a jacket with them. What NOT to Bring Cash, toys, electronics (cell phones, video games, ipad/ipod, etc), or other valuable items. Children s Music Summer Camp Program - Camper Conduct Agreement Please read aloud the following policies with your child. Then sign and return this form on or before the first day of camp. In order to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at the Morikami Children s Music Summer Camp Program we have some basic rules that each camper must agree to. I agree I will: 1 Be kind and respectful to teachers and other campers. 2 Help clean up after every project. 3 Be responsible for my own actions. Keep my hands to myself. 4 Do not climb on or touch museum artwork. 5 Use an inside voice and only appropriate language. 6 Stay with my group at all times. 7 Tell my teacher when I need help or if someone is bothering me. 8 Take part in all activities and HAVE FUN! Consequences, If I do not follow the rules: 1 st The teacher will give me a verbal warning about my inappropriate behavior and explain what is expected of me. 2 nd I will be asked to sit in quiet time and the teacher will speak to my parent/guardian after camp. 3 rd The camp coordinator will call my parents to pick me up and speak to my parent/guardian again. 4 th I may be removed from the program until next year. Parent Photo Release Form I, hereby grant or deny permission to Morikami, Inc. to use the image of my child, (name of camper), (age) as marked by my selection below. Such use includes the display, distribution, publication, transmission, or otherwise use of photographs, images taken of my child for use in materials that include, but may not be limited to, printed materials such as brochures and newsletters and digital images such as those on the Morikami, Inc. website or our social media. Deny permission to use my child s image at all. Grant permission to use my child s image in the following way: Unrestricted usage: I give unrestricted permission for my child s image to be used in print, video, and digital media. I agree that these images may be used by Morikami, Inc. for a variety of purposes and that these images may be used without further notifying me.
