BAY AREA AERO CLUB, Inc. Located at: 1637 CR 130 P.O. Box 537 Pearland Regional Airport Pearland, TX 77581 May 2015: BAAC HOME PAGE: http://www.bayareaaeroclub.org Saturday, May 9, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Pearland Regional Airport Open House. Free BBQ and beer, raffle prizes, Warbird display, and family-friendly activities (including lots for the kids). BAAC will have a big presence there. http://www.flypearland.com/openhouse Tuesday, May 12, 6:30 p.m. Board of Directors meeting. Club members are always welcomed to attend. Club members may also request to have a record of the BOD meetings sent to them by the secretary but that must be requested every month. Saturday, May 16, 10 a.m.-noon, General membership meeting, BAAC Clubhouse. The President s View Askew Wade Roberts (president@bayareaaeroclub.org) 312-806- 8928 Apologies for the brevity of this newsletter, but, with the welcome return of blue skies after what seems like an eternity, most of us are flying. (And new applications are flooding in.) The changeover to on- line flight time logging and payments through ScheduleMaster has occurred, happily, with very few hitches and little confusion, almost entirely due to the hard work and diligence of Treasurer Craig Norman. As we are still tweaking and learning things, there may be some minor hiccups until the process becomes second nature to all of us. We apologize for these in advance. Until then, your contacts are Member Representative LD Stevenson for general questions and Treasurer Craig Norman for payment- related questions. As a reminder, monthly dues are now payable online, and you can view your account for invoices. For the time being, we will continue to accept checks (left in the clubhouse lock box) or mailed to the post office box. Be advised that checks will likely take more than a week to be credited to your account, while credit- card payments and electronic fund transfers through ScheduleMaster will be reflected almost instantaneously. Please plan to join us at Pearland Regional s Open House, and at our next member meeting. Blue skies and tailwinds.

Treasurer s Column Craig Norman (craig.g.norman@gmail.com) 281-309- 7106 Please help me welcome our newest members Wade Jenkins, Greg Putch, Anh Nguyen and Tommy Etheredge Monthly Statistics (March 18, 2015 April 21, 2015) New Members: 4 Active Members: 198 Directors: 4 Director/Officer: 1 Officers: 7 General Members: 156 Family Members: 13 Owner/Member: 1 Owner / Family Member: 0 Owner Advisor: 1 Members Who Flew a BAAC Aircraft: 51 Total Hours Flown in BAAC Aircraft: 154.5 Members Who Flew More Than 5 Hours in BAAC Aircraft: 8 Hours Flown by Our Highest Flight Time Pilot in BAAC Aircraft: 13.1 (Steven Schwarz) Headsets are $0/day!! Key Billing Dates and Pointers: The 15 th of each month is still our due- date for bringing accounts to zero. On the 15 th of each month, an email will be sent to all members with debit balances asking that they log into Schedule Master, review their statement at My Account > My Statement and make a credit card or echeck payment to bring their account to zero or better (credit balance). Daily Transaction Emails are now being tested these will notify members of any changes to their online statement or aircraft schedules. Please do not any longer use IPN (Intuit Payment Network) for making payments. Reimbursement for Fuel / Oil (if not expensed on the aircraft s BAAC credit card): Please include the following on fuel receipts: Member Number Member Name Tail Number!!!! (too many don't have this) Gallons Purchased

Date Purchased Please note that fuel receipts are due within 1 month of the expense being incurred (i.e. a November 1 receipt is due by December 31; a November 30 receipt is also due December 31). Going Inactive To go inactive, please send an email to treasurer@bayareaaeroclub.org. I will respond to your email and place you inactive at the end of the current billing period. YOUR ACCOUNT BALANCE MUST BE BROUGHT TO $0.00 IN ORDER TO GO INACTIVE (unless you have a credit on account). Logging Flight Hours: Please ensure your Hobbs START time matches the previous pilot's Hobbs STOP time on your flight log entry. If you see a discrepancy, please call that preceding pilot and agree on corrections to be made. Otherwise, treasurer-corrected entries will always be made to the succeeding pilot's entry. Online Flight Logging, Accounting and Billing: Please note: The following information was sent in identical form as a broadcast email to all active club members on 24 March 2015, in the 1 April 2015 BAACTalk Newsletter, and is repeated here only to ensure everyone has received this announcement and self- training link: BAAC Online Flight Logging, Statements and Billing (Began Wed, 22 April 2015) On 22 April 2015, the Bay Area Aero Club moved to additional modules within Schedule Master to handle the logging of flights, the display of individual pilot flight and payment account information, and for maintenance and use of credit card and checking account information for payments for flights. 5 short lessons on the following topics within Schedule Master can be found at the below link: Lesson 1: Adding Electronic Payment Accounts (eg, Credit Card, echeck) Lesson 2: Pre- Flighting Your Schedule Lesson 3: Entering Your Post- Flight Meter and Receipts Lesson 4: Creating a Post- Flight Dispatch With No Schedule Lesson 5: How to Pay Using the Online Billing Function http://support.timesync.com/forums/168792- Online- Billing- Manual- for- End- Users Please review the above 5 lessons for all club operations now in effect. Effective the morning of 22 April 2015, aircraft notebooks no longer contain log sheets in their absence pilots will find business card sized logs that can be used to record Hobbs and Tach beginning and ending meter times for entry into the Schedule Master Post- Flight dispatch screen explained in the above link. If pilots prefer, however, they can print and use the Pre- Flight Dispatch sheet for recording those meter readings. Pilots should now use either the provided business card or their own printed pre- flight dispatch sheet for transferring their meter readings into Schedule Master immediately after their flight (once they reach an internet- enabled computer).

BAAC leadership has determined that all club pilots will be established with $100 credit limits within the new billing module. If a pilot knows that their flying schedule will exceed this amount (very likely), they are encouraged to build a credit balance within Schedule Master effectively transferring credit risk and amounts from the club to pilots own credit agreements with lenders (ie, credit card companies). As the $100 credit limit is neared, pilots will be expected to make payments at any time in the calendar month to stay below this amount. This effectively requires that pilots pay as they fly either by pre- paying from their checking account, or from their credit card - BAAC will no longer function as a lender. No longer will statements be emailed to pilots since this information can always be viewed real- time under the My Account > My Statement pull- down window in Schedule Master. However, for members carrying debit balances on their account (ie, they owe money), on the 15 th of each month a billing reminder will be sent via email, including the member s balance. They will have to log into Schedule Master, however, to see the detail in their online statement (ie, flights, payments, credits, etc) and make credit card or echeck payments. Please do not any longer make payments using IPN (Intuit Payment Network). Monthly dues will automatically appear in pilots online statements on the 15 th of each month, beginning 15 May. If pilots have questions after reviewing the above 5 lessons, please contact Craig Norman (BAAC Treasurer) at 281-309- 7106, or email at treasurer@bayareaaeroclub.org. Maintenance Earl Phillips, Maintenance Officer Piper and Cessna Electrical Power Supply Systems Piper and Cessna aircraft electrical power distribution systems perform the same function: provide regulated electrical energy to the lighting systems, turn coordinator, flaps (Cessna) and the avionics. The performance of these systems is displayed to the pilot differently. Monitoring the health of a Piper or Cessna system requires an understanding of what exactly is being displayed on the instrument panel. Each system energizes a battery contactor when the master switch is turned on. An audible click may be heard as the battery contactor is energized; completing the circuit from the battery to the electrical components. Note: After master switch actuation battery power is available to the starter. The avionics switch is off prior to start. This isolates all avionics from possible voltage transients that may occur during start.

Additionally, battery power is provided, via the ALT switch (which is physically collocated with the master switch), to the alternator controller. With the engine running the alternator controller controls the alternator output voltage to slightly higher than battery voltage- - - approximately 14 volts for a 12 volt system and 28 volts for a 24 volt system. The alternator regulated output is routed to the electrical components and, for the purpose of providing charging current, to the battery. On Piper aircraft the instrument panel mounted ammeter displays the electrical load placed on the alternator. It does not indicate battery discharge. With all electrical equipment off and the engine running the ammeter will indicate battery charging current- - - about two amperes when the battery is fully charged. With electrical equipment on the alternator load will be fifteen or greater amperes. On Cessna aircraft the power supply system is similar to Piper s except that the instrument panel mounted ammeter is configured to display alternator charging current to the battery- - - the ammeter needle is on the plus side when the engine is running and the alternator is functioning correctly. With no output from the alternator, the battery is the sole source of electrical energy, and the ammeter needle will be on the negative side- - - indicating battery discharge. For more details I recommend a review of the aircraft POH/AFM electrical system description. An understanding of the operational features of the electrical system is critical to being able to manage electrical anomalies. C172 Auto Pilot The C172 STEC autopilot has recently undergone maintenance. Dave Sanders is requesting pilot feedback on the AP operation. To get started, in cruise, turn the heading bug to the desired heading and turn the autopilot switch (center right bottom of the instrument panel) on. Then push the button at the top left corner of the turn coordinator (the turn coordinator is a component of the AP system) and push two more times until the HD lamp is illuminated. Now you are in heading mode and the AP will fly the bug selected heading. For altitude hold push the Alt Hold button mounted on the pilot s control and the AP will fly the altitude selected. These are the basic AP functions. For GPS tracking I suggest reviewing the STEC supplement to the AFM. Cessna Ground Handling I periodically witness a Club Cessna being steered by pushing down (and sitting) on the horizontal stabilizer to raise the nose wheel and realign the fuselage. Without benefit of structural analysis it is safe to assume that the horizontal stabilizer was probably never intended to be exposed to the load this procedure induces. Accounting for this assumption some Cessna owner/operators have gone so far as to place NO PUSH decals on the horizontal stabilizer leading edge. If this is your preferred method of ground steering and you hear a cracking sound please ground the airplane. Or, you may want to consider using the tow bar that is furnished with each airplane.

This is where the BAAC aircraft are located.

ABOUT THE BAY AREA AERO CLUB The Bay Area Aero Club (BAAC) is a non-profit Flying Club based at the Pearland Regional Airport. It has been in operation since 1979, and has a membership of approximately 165 members. The Club is managed by six officers who are selected by a Board of Directors. The five members of the Board are elected by the membership at an annual meeting. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at the airport. An Aviation Safety meeting follows every monthly meeting. The membership is diverse and includes students working on obtaining a private license, private and commercial pilots, pilots with instrument and multiengine ratings, CFI and CFII instructors, and airline transport pilots. Each member is covered by a comprehensive insurance policy, and is required to take an annual check ride with a certified Club Instructor. The BAAC has aircraft agreements with several owners to rent their aircraft exclusively to Club members. The Club's fleet varies from time to time, but we try to maintain a mix that includes primary trainers, instrument trainers, complex aircraft, and single-engine cross-country aircraft. Our aircraft are available for local and extended overnight trips. The BAAC offers an attractive leaseback program for aircraft owners. The Club pays the standard airport ramp tie-down fees and a portion of the aircraft insurance coverage. At this time, we have eight (8) aircraft in the club. They are: C150 N18593 C152 N49090 Cherokee 235 N8501N PA-28R-200 N608 (Retract Gear Arrow) Citabria N939AB (Tail Wheel) C172SP N501ER Cherokee 180 N9309J Current rental rates and much more information can be found on our website: www.bayareaaeroclub.org When the applications are completed these may be mailed to the Club secretary for approval. Fees include an initiation fee of $100 (payable at orientation), and monthly dues of $25 payable at the time of the initiation.
