HISTORY S*M*U*T AGAIN! CREATING HISTORY AGAIN 19/20 MARCH 2016 GREG STOCK FINANCIAL SERVICES
FROM THE WATTLE TOWN OF COOTAMAMUNDRA TO LAKE CARGELLIGO BY STEAM ENGINE After the success of our initial history making tour to Naradhan in December 2014, SMUT Tours are back with a follow-up trip the likes of which has not been seen for decades. FIRST STEAM LOCOMOTIVE IN THREE DECADES With a huge question mark surrounding the long term operation of the Ungarie to Lake Cargelligo branch line, the Strange Modelers of Universal Trains Social Group in conjunction with the Lachlan Valley Railway will be running their annual trip from Cootamundra to Lake Cargelligo and return over the weekend of March 19/20 2016 Not only will this be a rare opportunity to ride the rails across the Riverina wheat fields to the The Lake it will be behind a P class steam locomotive 3237 the first time since 1985 that a steam locomotive has been seen at this unique destination. Opened in 1917, the Lake Cargelligo line has survived numerous threats to have it closed outright in recent decades. Passenger services to the town were the mainstay of the 30T and 32 class steam locomotives on mixed train services through to 1938 when they were replaced by CPH and then the 620 class railmotors, before all passenger services ceased in 1983. Aside from the ARHSACT tour in 1985 the only trains seen north west of Ungarie are the occasional wheat train normally the mainstay of 48 class diesel locomotives. We will be recreating the golden age of rail travel as we seat comfortably in Lachlan Valley Railway 1930 s style compartment carriages for an early 6am departure from Cootamundra and swing west on the back line to Stockinbingal. Reviving memories of the long defunct South Mail we anticipate a brisk run to Temora for a servicing stop and leg stretch. The fertile wheat fields of the Riverina will open up as we travel through Reefton to Barmedman and a stop at Wyalong to pick up travellers from town. We will continue onto the junction stop of Ungarie for the locomotive to take water and service. Heading north west out of Ungarie the real fun begins as the P class will wander through places like Weja, Bygalorie, Tullibigeal and Wargambeagal to arrive at the Lake for a two hour stop, have a look around, grab a bit to eat even. One of the furthest places on the Riverina rail map, the last time a steam locomotive was at the Lake was in 1985 when the ACT ARHS ran their 30T out there, so this will be an occasion not to be missed. WITH SPECIAL THANKS TO PART OF EVERY TICKET WILL GO TOWARDS THE RESTORATION OF STEAM LOCOMOTIVE 1022 Booking form design by Brad Peadon - smut.modelers.group@gmail.com
