From here we begin a walking of about an hour through the heart of the island in the company of our guide. We are bound to be fascinated by the Vallée de Mai, once considered to be the site of the Garden of Eden and today a worthy holder of the title UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its forest is home to numerous rare and surprising species of flora and fauna, including the coco de mer, the largest seed in the world, which has become one of the symbols of the Seychelles. It forms part of the diet of the black parrot, an extremely rare bird found in the area. We reach then Anse Lazio beach, where we'll stop briefly to take photographs and relax on the fine sands. After a break to relax or swim, we'll head for lunch at a restaurant where we'll enjoy a buffet of creole specialities*. We'll visit the Union Estate, a historic estate where we can admire the old colonial residence (visit to the exterior), observe how the copra is extracted from the coconut and see some adorable examples of giant Seychelles tortoises. On board a highly colourful minivan we then head for the Anse Source d'argent beach which, with its imposing and scenic blocks of granite, is considered by many to be the most beautiful beach in the Seychelles and one of the most beautiful in the world, the location for a number of adverts and photo shoots. Mahé from above North itinerary: Sainte Anne Marine National Park Eden Island and Victoria South itinerary: Intendance and Grand Police Domaine de Val De Pres We reach the local airport for a thrilling excursion by air over the island of Mahé to discover its most beautiful views as well as its most hidden recesses. The pilot selects an itinerary depending on weather conditions. There is either a northern or a southern route, but both are spectacular. The northern itinerary will take us over the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, a true temple for flora and fauna that also includes an archipelago with magnificent heavenly islands: Ile au Cerf, Ronde, Moyenne and Longue. Our aircraft continues towards Eden Island, a private artificial island covering over 40 hectares and connected to Mahé via a bridge, and over Victoria, the small capital of the archipelago. We then head back to the airport as we continue to admire amazing stretches of coast and hidden inlets. The southern itinerary passes over the lush vegetation of Mahé and the spectacular white beaches of Intendance and Frand Police, two of the most beautiful bays on the island. We admire the waves crushing majestically onto the granite cliffs and continue towards Domaine de Val De Pres, a village built according to traditional Creole architecture with the objective of promoting the cultural heritage of the Seychelles. This excursion does not include the services of a guide but a local escort will be present. The number of places for this excursion is limited so it is recommended to book early. Nosy Be TWO JEWELS OF THE INDIAN OCEAN: THE ISLANDS OF KOMBA AND TANIKELY A boat tour exploring two enchanting islands, where unspoilt nature prevails over the rule of man: underwater landscapes of rare beauty, luxuriant forests and curious animals, and crystal-clear waters just begging you to take a dip. A delicious restaurant lunch is the icing on the cake for this perfect day. Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve Trip to the lighthouse and swimming in the sea Nosy Komba Lemur park Restaurant lunch Relaxing on the beach We board our direct boat to the island of Nosy Tanikely, meaning small island in the local language. Nosy Tanikely is a small atoll to the south of Nosy Be, home to a Marine Reserve, a true tropical water paradise which, even at a depth of just a few metres, presents an ocean floor of exceptional beauty, rich in coral and sea fans, multicoloured fish and starfish of various shapes and sizes. In the company of our guide, we arrive on foot at the lighthouse that enjoys an enchanting view of the bay below and, looking towards the forest, we'll try to spot the fruit bats, also known as flying foxes, that are practically the only inhabitants of the island. We'll then stop at the beach for a swim in the unspoilt ecosystem of Nosy Tanikely and, with a bit of luck, we can encounter the sea turtles that are quite common in the area. We return to the boat and travel to Nosy Komba, where we find a small village with an evocative market of hand-made items. Having crossed the village, it's a pleasant walk to the lemur park*. These graceful animals are a very rare species of primate, present in the wild only in Madagascar and the Comoros Islands. In the park we'll have the opportunity to admire some captive examples of the chameleons, boa constrictors and tortoises that populate the island. Next, a delicious fish-based lunch awaits us, which we will enjoy seated comfortably on the terrace of a restaurant facing the sea. In the afternoon there's still time for a refreshing swim or to relax on the beach before returning to the ship. PAGE 17
