INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS 7 QUESTIONS ASKED BY PUPILS Pupils (and adults too) often ask these questions so it is useful to know the answers! OLIVER DIXON/IMAGEWISE How high is The Shard? 309.6 metres (1,016 feet) from the ground to the top of the spire. The View from The Shard is at a height of 244 metres (800 feet). How fast do the lifts go? Six metres a second - not quite as fast as Usain Bolt! How many panes of glass are in The Shard? 11,000, and no two are identical! Enough to cover eight football pitches. Who built The Shard? Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the principal contractor was Mace in conjunction with WSP (engineers) and Severfield Reeve Structures (steel). How much did The Shard cost to build? Construction cost 400million. Does The Shard move in the wind? Yes. All tall buildings have a sway factor built in, but it is perfectly safe. The Shard s concrete core and steel structure offers both stability and a highly engineered degree of flexibility in very high winds, when the tower has been designed to move by up to 50cm/20 inches. What s the highest floor I can visit? Level 72 is the highest floor the public can go to. The highest floor you can stand on (only open to maintenance staff) is 87 and the highest piece of glass is officially on the 95th floor. What s that? Good luck with this question as it can often be hard to determine which landmark visitors are looking at from 800 feet in the air! However, our guest ambassadors will be on hand to help you.
