TANZANIA CYCLE 3 11 NOVEMBER 2018 Patron Her Majesty The Queen Registered Charity No. 1059050

EVENT DETAILS: 10 days / 5 days cycling 495km 395 registration fee Enjoy the spectacular stunning views as we circumnavigate the highest freestanding mountain of the world Finish on the outskirts of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ngorongoro Crater Experience the unspoilt Maasai local culture and beauty of the region Ride into the Tarangire National Park for a wildlife experience Extend your stay for an optional Serengeti Safari, Trek up Kilimanjaro or the beaches of Zanzibar NORWOOD CHALLENGES: TANZANIA CYCLE An incredible cycling challenge circumnavigating the highest free standing mountain in the world Mount Kilimanjaro. Travel 360º in the shadow of it s 19,980ft height, through tropical rain forests, sugarcane plantations and the Tarangire National Park before finishing at the UNESCO world heritage site of the Ngorongoro Crater - experiencing the Maasai culture along the way. Tanzania is a fascinating country that boasts immense expanses of land, a mountain and a crater where tropical forest meets the African savannah plains and where 80% of the land we cycle through belongs to the Maasai community. Its charm lies in the small holder farms and isolated Maasai villages where life, customs and culture still remain relatively untainted by western civilisation. Only on a bike can you truly discover its hidden gems. 2 Challenges 2018 Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) - Cycle

ITINERARY Tanzania cycle This itinerary may be subject to change DAY 1: SATURDAY 3 Overnight flight from London Heathrow to Kilimanjaro via Doha. DAY 2: SUNDAY 4 Arrive Kilimanjaro, 45min approx transfer to hotel for overnight stay, near Arusha. Bike fitting and evening briefing.. DAY 3: MONDAY 5 Arusha to West Kilimanjaro Cycle 84km It s a gentle start as we leave Rivertrees (Mt Meru National Park/ Usa River) on a leisurely and slow 400m descent over 40km on good tarmac roads. From mid-morning it all changes as we cycle out towards and up the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, passing small rural farms and villages for the fantastic mountain views of Mt Kilimanjaro heading out into Maasai country & open cereal crop farmlands. There s an offroad finish on undulating winding tracks as we head across farmland up to Simba Farm where we camp for the night. This is a working farm where they grow a large amount of their own produce. Facilities may be basic, but the food is great as we settle round the campfire and enjoy a sundowner and the fantastic views. Challenges 2018 Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) - Cycle 3

DAY 4: TUESDAY 6 West Kilimanjaro to Marangu Cycle 130km Waking up to the beautiful views across the western slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro, we cycle across the fields of the farm to rejoin the unsealed/part tarmac roads with some rocky sections - from Tinga Tinga via Rongai to Marangu. This is a long, challenging day as we cycle around the northern sides of Mt Kilimanjaro through tropical rainforest, climbing to our peak of 2,000m above sea level. Passing Maasai farm lands, banana farm plantations and market towns, it s a winding day of twists and turns, descents and climbs with a similar amount of height loss/descent on rolling foothills. A real day for mixing with the friendly rural farmers on their way to market - we freshen up at fresh water mountain streams and finish at Marangu. DAY 5: WEDNESDAY 7 Marangu to Arusha Cycle 80km (with optional 25KM) It s an uphill start with some glorious winding cycling ahead of us, on forest roads and their stunning views of the Pare Mountains. Joining the main road to Arusha, we turn off to take an unusual off road path that leads the way to the colonial lands of sugarcane plantations and the http://www.tpc-club.co.tz/ From Marangu to Moshi, we ll have fully completed our circumnavigation of Kilimanjaro today, transferring onto our destination of Arusha. Feeling strong and you can do an extra 25km! DAY 6: THURSDAY 8 Arusha to Tarangire National Park Cycle 105km There s a good solid day of fairly flat road cycling today, from Arusha via Makuyuni to the Tarangire National Park - through the savannah plains. We lodge for the night at Tarangire, looking forward to an evening game drive/bush sundowner and some Maasai culture to finish. 4 Challenges 2018 Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) - Cycle

DAY 7: FRIDAY 9 Tarangire to Lake Manyara /Ngorongoro Crater Gate Cycle 76km From the main gate of Tarangire, we head out via Makuyuni to the Lake Manyara National Park and its stunning views of Lake Manyara - experiencing a wealth of Maasai culture along the way. On and upwards, it s a challenging second half of the day on good roads, with some long steady climbs before being rewarded with views of Lake Manyara. It s a serious (add-on) 37km climb if you opt to cycle right up to the Ngorongoro Crater itself, otherwise save it for tomorrow and enjoy a sundowner before celebrating the past week! OPTIONAL EXTRA: DAY 8: SATURDAY 10 Free day with optional 4x4 half/full day Safari to Ngorongoro National Park Crater. DAY 9: SUNDAY 11 Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport. DAY 10: MONDAY 12 Arrive London Heathrow. Challenges 2018 Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) - Cycle 5

HOW WE GRADE YOUR CHALLENGE We want to give you an incredible experience, but the overriding objective is of course to raise as much money as you can for Norwood. With this is mind, you have to EARN your sponsorship money and this can only be achieved if there is truly an element of challenge involved. Our challenges are graded moderate, challenging, tough and extreme. Many factors will influence this categorisation terrain, distances, climate, living conditions, altitudes, climbs etc. The grade allocated however will reflect the overall level of challenge with some days being more challenging than others. Challenging events require you to have a reasonable level of fitness and an open mind to new situations. Tough events have usually longer itineraries, may take place in more remote areas and require a good level of fitness. Extreme events require a very good level of fitness, are hard going, may involve more basic conditions and often involve longer days, steep climbs and descents. Level of challenge: Overall, this is a challenging cycle with tough days all at a moderate average altitude. You should be physically fit, there are some difficult days with good climbs and long daily distances. While the highest point in the challenge is 2,150m (the effects of altitude are normally felt from 2,500), you may notice the difference and feel a little more tired than usual. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW. TRAVEL DETAILS FLIGHTS Your flights and all internal transfers are included in the cost of this challenge if taking the recommended group flights - there are two options to choose from. The main group will be travelling with Qatar, with an option to choose KLM. PASSPORT AND VISAS A 10-year passport is essential which must have at least six months validity still remaining from the date of entry into Tanzania. British Nationals DO require a visa for Tanzania and we recommend that this is obtained prior to departure and NOT upon arrival. Details of which can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tanzania/entry-requirements A single-entry travel visa is valid for 3 months with effect from the date of issue and costs 40 and should be obtained from the Tanzania High Commission https://tzhc.uk/ Full details about will be sent nearer the time as you do not need to apply until September. It is your responsibility to organise your visa, the costs of which are not included in the cost of your challenge. (1) in person Embassy of Nepal, 12A, Kensington Palace Gardens, London, W8 4QU (telephone: +20 7229 1594 or 6231 or 5352) or (2) by submitting an application by post. Full details will be provided nearer to the time of your challenge. INSURANCE Travel insurance covering trip curtailment, emergency medical treatment, air evacuation and repatriation is a compulsory condition of your booking and can be arranged by Norwood at an additional charge of 25 - if you do not have your own insurance in place. This should cover you for an escorted cycle, for both ON and OFF road. If you choose not to take out the appropriate travel insurance, should you fall ill or be involved in an accident you will not be covered for those associated costs. We strongly recommend you are insured for the full duration of your trip and the policy is taken out prior to the date of your departure and does not cease until you have returned. If you have an existing policy we highly recommend you call your insurers and confirm that it meets with the requirement of the trip and that you are fully covered for the event you are undertaking - clarify its precise nature to your insurers (an escorted cycle challenge both on and off road terrain). You must also make sure you inform the insurance company of any pre-existing medical conditions before travel, failure to do so may invalidate your policy or any subsequent claim. BAGGAGE Your allowable checked baggage is one main luggage item on the recommended Qatar Airways flight and should not exceed 30kg. If travelling with any other airline, we suggest you check their baggage allowance online. Norwood is not responsible for any excess charges incurred. We advise you carry your cycle helmet, a set of cycling clothes and any medication you require, with your hand luggage. Challenges 2018 Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) - Cycle 7

HEALTH AND VACCINATIONS You must seek professional medical advice from your GP or local travel clinic. To find out more visit https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries or a good website is www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk and https://www.lonelyplanet.com/tanzania/health Useful advice about healthcare abroad is also available on the NHS Choices website. All travellers are advised to ensure their vaccinations for Hepatitus A/B, typhoid and boosters for tetanus, diphtheria and polio are up to date. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is not officially required to enter Tanzania unless you re coming from an infected area. There is a risk of malaria mainly in the region of Tarangire but please seek medical advice. You should bring your own regular medication with sufficient supplies for the whole trip and a small first aid kit. You must also advise Norwood of any preexisting medical conditions and will be required to complete a medical form when you sign up. These details will be passed to our tour doctor who may wish to contact you prior to the event to clarify any medical conditions or requirements. Medical facilities can be very basic, so it is important that all medical information is received in full and travel insurance is taken out FOOD All water provided while cycling will be safe to drink. Bottled water will be available to buy in the hotels. You should NOT drink or use the tap water (even for brushing your teeth). All of the hotels where we are staying have their own borehole water. To conform with environmental guidelines, this is now supplied in flasks/carafes in your room this is safe to drink. To avoid sickness while travelling it is important to be careful about hygiene. This means always washing your hands before eating & not sharing water bottles. Please bring with you some antibacterial gel and/or hand wipes to use while cycling. All meals will be provided for on the challenge except for lunch on non-cycling days. Meals will be substantial, but it is still a good idea to bring your own energy bars and snacks to keep you going during the day. While in hotels and lodges, meals will generally be provided from the self-service buffet operated by the accommodation. Food en-route, packed lunches or meals provided by the in-country team will be vegetarian with permitted fish/cheese. More information will be provided in the lead up to the event. We will need to know in advance of any special dietary requirements - vegan, non-dairy and glutenfree can usually be catered for, but are not nearly as common as they are in the UK and your choice may therefore be limited. Just fill in the appropriate section on your registration form. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation for this challenge is listed below. All costs are based on sharing a twin/triple/quad room, however if you would like a single room, then please do let us know as soon as possible. There is VERY limited availability and the additional cost is 395. Day 1: Overnight Flight Day 2: Sunday 4 - http://rivertrees.com/ Day 3: Monday 5 - http://simbafarmlodge.co.tz/ (Camping) Day 4: Tuesday 6 - http://www.maranguhotel.com/ Day 5: Wednesday 7 - http://www.a1hotelandresort.co.tz/ Day 6: Thursday 8 http://www tarangiresafarilodge.com/ Day 7 & 8: Friday 9 and Saturday 10: http://www.serenahotels.com/serenalakemanyara Day 9: Sunday 11 - Overnight flight Day 10: Monday 12 - Arrive London Heathrow ACCOMMODATION The Tanzanian Shilling is the official currency of Tanzania, but $US are also widely accepted in tourist areas. There will be an opportunity to exchange sterling on our arrival at Rivertrees on the first night. We will also arrange for a stop at one of the many ATM s available on route. If you are taking $US, we advise taking larger denominations as you will get a better exchange rate. We recommend that you bring approximately 100 of personal spending money which will be sufficient for drinks, tips and souvenirs. It is also customary to tip the ground crew at the end of your challenge and we suggest 30pp/ 100,000TZS. We also advise that you bring a credit card for emergencies - all major forms of credit card are accepted in Tanzania, although it is best to travel with either Mastercard or Visa as these are accepted most widely (Amex can be useful to withdraw dollars from banks). Do let your bank know in advance that you will be travelling with your card. The optional night time safari at Tarangiri and the half/full day safari available at the weekend at the Ngorongoro Crater will be at an additional charge to be advised. 8 Challenges 2018 Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) - Cycle

WEATHER Tanzania lies just south of the equator and on the whole enjoys a tropical climate, except in the high mountains (like Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru) where temperatures can get below freezing, especially at night. Along the coast, it stays quite hot and humid with heavy and reliable rainfall, especially during the rainy season. Tanzania has two rainy seasons, generally, the heaviest rains (called Masika) usually fall from mid- March to May and a shorter period of rain (called mvuli) from November to mid-january. At the foot of Mount Meru, the city of Arusha is located, at 1,400 metres (4,600 feet) of altitude. Here the temperature is pleasant all year round, in fact the daily averages go from 19 C (66 F) in the period from January to April, to 14.5 C (58 F) in June and July. Sometimes, however, between November and March, during the day it can get hot. Nights are cool throughout the year, especially from June to September, when lows can drop below 10 C (50 F), while during the day the temperature fluctuates around 20/22 C (68/72 F). CYCLING KIT The kit required for each challenge may differ slightly, but there are certain items that are consistent in every challenge. Full kit lists will be provided after registration with details of any specific items that may be needed, but please find detailed below a sample of the basic kit. ESSENTIAL your own helmet cycling gloves some cycling shorts TYPICAL DAY While cycling, we are usually up at around 6.30am! It s an early breakfast with cycling usually starting by 7.30/8.00am depending upon the day ahead. We cycle for 3-4 hours in the morning, stop for lunch and then cycle all afternoon to our overnight hotel aiming to have cycled over half of the days distance before lunch. There are stops generally every 15-20km for water and snacks. On arrival at the evening accommodation, there s time for a shower and a rest before meeting for dinner in the evening and a briefing on the day ahead. USEFUL INFORMATION Time difference: GMT + 3hrs International dialling code: +255 Electricity/Plug sockets: 230V/50Hz (UK plug) Check out this link for more details: https://www.powerplugs-sockets.com/tanzania/ Local Culture - Tanzanians are welcoming and well disposed towards visitors, but you should be sensitive to local culture. Loud or aggressive behaviour, drunkenness, foul language and disrespect, especially towards older people, will cause offence. Do not take photographs of the Maasai or their households without seeking permission first. There is a high proportion of Muslims in Tanzania, especially along the coast and on Zanzibar and Pemba. Respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and be aware of your actions to ensure that they don t offend, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you intend to visit religious areas. small rucksack or bike bag light waterproofs casual clothes for the evening something smart for end-of-ride celebratory dinner OPTIONAL You can bring your own pedals, bar ends and toe cleats and any other personal cycling equipment you see fit to modify the bike supplied, but it isn t compulsory.
