K E S S I N G L A N D P A R I S H C O U N C I L The Link August 2017 Increase in Anti-Social Behaviour across the Village Issue 24 In this issue Anti Social Behaviour in Village Allotments Update WI report for July Knitathon 3rd River Crossing Update from Africa Alive Page No With the school summer holidays underway, nobody wants to see the situation arise whereby a few of the youths in the village spoil and cause problems which reflect on the rest of their age group. Included in this must be the responsibility of parents to ensure that their children are safe and not causing problems within the wider community, which can lead to anti-social behaviour, damage and stress amongst residents, particularly the elderly, as well as being a danger to themselves. So far this school holiday, there have been a number of incidents involving young children :- Climbing onto the roof of the Community Centre Climbing onto the roof of the changing room block causing damage to the roof tiles and pulling away the guttering Climbing up onto the top of the storage container, stamping up and down on the top causing damage. Taking rubbish out of the industrial waste bin and setting fire to it on the skatepark Using a disposable bar-b-q to attempt to set a fire under a oil storage tank at the rear of the Community Centre Forcing a concrete post away from its position causing the concrete slats to fall out, this happened at the Clare Road entrance. In addition there is the continued ongoing anti-social behaviour at Marram Green which is causing anxiety and stress to the residents, where youths are getting into the building causing damage and generally being abusive. ( cont)...

P A G E 2 ( cont)... It is estimated that the current spate of events have so far cost around to repair. This money will have to come out of the public purse, from the precept money paid by the community through the Council Tax. This expense is not sustainable and therefore the Parish Council acting on behalf of the Community and working with the Police, will endeavour to identify those responsible and seek to claim compensation from the parents of those involved. Failing that, consideration will be given, if there is evidence to prove what has taken place, to pursuing the parents of those responsible through the County Court for payment of the damage caused. This is the first time that the Parish Council has taken this stance on anti-social behaviour, in the past we have relied on the Police to take the necessary action, but circumstances have changed, the frequency is increasing AND THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE NEED TO HOLD THOSE RESPONSIBLE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR BEHAVIOUR Parish Council Allotments Please note that from the 1st September the allotments at Church Road and St.Edmunds Crescent will be the responsibility of Councillor Billy Nicholls - replacing Councillor Wernham. All enquiries are still to be made through the Parish Clerk on T H E L I N K

A U G U S T I S S U E 2 4 P A G E 3 Kessingland WI This month our hall was decorated with some of the knitted bunted made by our members for the village celebrations. There will be more to come of this very colourful display when the craft club meet to sew the remainder of the flags onto ribbon. Members of the craft group will be learning this month how to make button jewellery. The walking ladies had to make a detour last month as a family of swans was nesting close to the footpath, and they didn't want to be disturbed! Next time the ladies will be walking round the footpath at Lound Lakes, and in August they plan to go on a route near Sotterley Chapel. September has already been earmarked for a visit to Oulton Broad to visit the museum in Nicholas Everitt park. Our speaker in July told us of his long interest in coastal erosion and the effects he has observed locally over the last 50 years. At our meeting in August we shall be finding out all about the art of thatching! Sue Meikle brought an impressive beach find to win the competition, and Pauline Shipley not only won Bloom of the Month but also made delightful birthday posies. -

P A G E 4 Suffolk County Council is seeking your views on the proposal for a new crossing over Lake Lothing in Lowestoft. The existing bridges at Mutford Lock and the A47 Bascule Bridge over the lake are inadequate to meet current and future traffic demand. Delays and congestion are a common occurrence for drivers, particularly during peak hours, and pedestrians and cyclists often have long and difficult journeys as they travel across the town. A new crossing will reduce congestion, creating a new link between north and south Lowestoft. This new crossing presents an opportunity to introduce a focal point for the town enhancing its identity. This will help to regenerate the area and attract new investment. This is a significant project for Lowestoft and it is important that residents, businesses and those affected by the project have their say to help inform the refinement of the proposal. In March 2016 Suffolk County Council (SCC) received a provisional funding agreement of approximately 73m from the Department for Transport. This funding would cover the majority of the construction works required to deliver the crossing. The additional money required to deliver the project has been secured by the county council. The crossing would consist of a multi-span bridge from Waveney Drive on the south side, to Peto Way on the north side. It is a single carriageway road with an opening section over the Lake and includes new roundabouts to the north and south to help integrate traffic smoothly into the existing road network. New foot and cycle ways will also be included. T H E L I N K

A U G U S T I S S U E 2 4 P A G E 5 The consultation will run for six weeks, between Monday 4 September and Monday 16 October and is the public s opportunity to express their views on the scheme. SCC will carefully consider the public s views and publish a report on the consultation. This report will form part of the planning application for the project. You can use the following methods to fill out the consultation: Go online to access the consultation documents and fill out a questionnaire at: Complete questionnaires or send other feedback to SCC at: LL3X Consultation Team Freepost RTUL-KAKE-BCTPO Box (Lake Lothing) London. EC4P4HN View consultation documents and pick up a questionnaire at Lowestoft, Kessingland and Oulton Broad libraries or Waveney District Council Offices Attend a public consultation event at Marram Green, Hall Road, Kessingland on Tuesday 12th September 2017 between 2.30pm and 7.30pm

P A G E 6 Latest News From Africa Alive! As usual, we continue to be kept nice and busy here at Africa Alive!, and with the school summer holidays now upon us, that is exactly what we like to be! This is now our harvest period as we greet around 40% of our annual visitors in the two months of July and August. In fact, on a busy day during the 6 weeks of summer we could see more visitors than we do throughout all of December! It is so important throughout the year, however many guests we have visiting, each and every one of them receive the same level of high service from the team. It s not just the amazing array of beautiful animals that we are fortunate enough to have here that can make a difference to someone s day out. Speaking of those wonderful animals who reside here, we have had another flurry of births this year, which you may have seen in the local press. Whilst the drill and golden-bellied mangabey were earlier in the year, the aardvark reported last month has certainly stolen the show along with the hearts of visitors to the park, however there have been a few others that we cannot forget about. In fact, I m not sure if it was planned, but these births have had a colour theme linking them all This started back in April with the birth of twin black lemurs. This may seem quite a while ago now, however given their size and dependence on Mum for those first weeks and months, they were quite difficult to spot on their island, especially as their fur is brown in colour whilst they are young, to help camouflage them against Mum. At around 5-6 weeks, the fur of males will become darker, turning to black, as they mature. Parenthood is not new to Dylan and Marlien, however this is their first set of twins to contend with. That said, they are all looking very well and can be seen on their island each day as the youngsters become more independent and adventurous of their surroundings. T H E L I N K

A U G U S T I S S U E 2 4 P A G E 7 Next in the colour scheme came from the Chapman s zebra herd as Sage gave birth to a foal on the 12th June. As they would need to in the wild, this youngster could stand within minutes of being born, and was walking around 15 minutes later. A new son to father Max, this latest addition to the herd has been named Parsley by the keepers, and can be seen in the recently extended Plains of Africa paddock. Zebra foals born at the park have had a theme to follow of their own, as keepers have chosen to use different herbs and spices when naming them. Whilst Max joined us from another collection in 2013 (Schwerin Zoo in Germany), mother Sage was also born at the park, along with the other females; Cumin and Fennel. Our most recent of the black and white births, has been a new arrival to the group of King Colobus monkeys, which came only a few days after the zebra. Once again, Ebony and Bert are proving to be excellent parents to this youngster, having had several others in previous years. Whilst the latest addition to the group will not be very agile to start, being carried around for some time, it is not too difficult to spot due to its colouring. At birth, the normally black monkeys are covered in white fur. This will gradually become replaced with black to match the adults. So whether it s to see these latest black and white babies, the previously reported aardvark, drill or mangabey youngsters, or to visit any of the other wonderful animals that call Africa Alive! their home, we look forward to seeing you here and hope you have an excellent time with us. What do you have hiding in cupboards or in the attic? We are looking out for any old photos, films or memorabilia from Africa Alive!/Suffolk Wildlife (and Country/ Rare Breeds) Park/Kessingland Zoo from over the years for a display. Do you have anything from previous visits that may show how the park has changed over time? If so, we would love to see it! We are happy to take copies of any films or images, or can return items to you, but whatever you have, we are interested! Please contact the park on or send items to us addressed for the attention of Kirsty Dupée.
