2 Page 2 The Newtownabbey Coat of Arms Page 3 The Crest The Phoenix is given two heads to signify a second resurrection and is charged with a crozier, another reference to the name of Newtownabbey. The Mural Crown is appropriate for a local authority and the colours of the mantling are those of Northern Ireland and, in any case, fit the colouring of the complete coat of arms. The Supporters These represent five prominent families. The red eagle of de Courcy is joined to the black lion of de Burgh, and the black griffen of Grimshaw is joined to the red lion of O Neill. Each supporter is gorged with a checky collar reflecting the checky field in the Arms of Chichester. One supporter rests a paw on a cogwheel, symbol of light and industry and the other on a garb, signifying agriculture. It is parted gold and blue as a reference to grain and flax. Armorial Bearing for the Borough of Newtownabbey was designed by Richmond, Herald of Arms, and approved by the Kings of Arms on 4 October, The rationale of the design is explained as follows: The Arms The Abbot s Mitre refers to the Abbey and so to the name of the Authority. This Abbey at Whiteabbey was reputedly founded in the 13th century for White Friars and was attached to Dryburgh Abbey in Scotland. A small ruin existed until 1925, but the remains have now totally disappeared. It is set against a background of green and black, signifying agriculture and industry - the gold being the wealth extracted from them both. The Motto Multi-in Uno Resurgent (Many re-arise as one) is an adaptation of the motto of the former Newtownabbey Urban District Council - Septem In Uno Surgent (Seven arise as one). These references are to the seven villages, Carnmoney, Glengormley, Jordanstown, Monkstown, Whiteabbey, Whitehouse and Whitewell. They comprised the former Newtownabbey Urban District at the time of its establishment in 1958 and the greatly extended area administered by the present Council since 1973.

3 Page 4 Page 5 Mayor s Foreword As I sit here thinking about what to write to introduce you to this little diary, I am reminded of Tallulah Bankhead, a famous actress of the 1920s who said: It s only the good girls who keep diaries; the bad girls never have time! I got to thinking about what a diary actually represents. In this little book you will record your appointments and meetings, your successes and the things you dread. In our modern world where time-keeping and pressure of work can take over our lives we can become slaves to our diaries. As a family man, I firmly believe that strong family ties are the bedrock of our community life. Families these days take different forms and can even become quite complicated that s part of the diversity we, as a society, hope to embrace. I want to take this opportunity to encourage you to use this little book to schedule time with your family and friends just as you would a professional engagement. Write in the birthdays and anniversaries that are significant to you - acknowledge them and celebrate the people in your life who are important. Remember, as Rev Jesse Jackson once said Your children need your presence more than your presents. To have become the first citizen of Newtownabbey has been one of the greatest honours of my life. I have the enormous privilege of being in a position to highlight the work of many unsung heroes within our community and I am constantly amazed at the daily, diligent commitment of people from all walks of life who care for the young, the elderly and the sick, both on a voluntary and professional basis. We find ourselves living in uncertain times and as my diary fills up and I attend daily engagements it strikes me that the constant resources we can rely on throughout the Borough of Newtownabbey are the kindness, resilience and neighbourliness of the people in this part of the world. I would leave you with a thought from Mother Teresa which I try to live by. As I wish you and yours happiness and success for every day of 2010 you might like to bear in mind the following words as you attend your meetings and appointments. I hope you find some meaning in them. Speak tenderly to them. Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of your greeting. Always have a cheerful smile.
