Things to have in your medicine cabinet include: Paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain relief (check the label or speak to your pharmacist to check it s suitable for you) Anti-histamines to help allergies Anti-diarrhoeals and oral rehydration sachets for diarrhoea Indigestion remedies such as an antacid Mild laxative for constipation A first aid kit Medicines specifically for children (your pharmacist can advise on the most suitable ones to keep in the house) Remember that medicines go out of date, so don t overstock your medicine cabinet. Always follow the advice on the pack, and if your symptoms continue (or are severe) get further advice. Health information If you re looking for general health information then you ll find what you are looking for by visiting: PHARMACISTS Prescriptions If you are on routine/repeat medication, you should ensure that you have sufficient supplies well in advance of the festive holiday weekends. If you forget to obtain a prescription for a repeat medication and run out of important medicines, you may be able to get help from your pharmacy. Under the Urgent Provision of Repeat Medication service, pharmacists may be permitted to supply you with a further cycle of a previously repeated medicine without having to get a prescription from your GP. If you receive stoma products from your pharmacy or other supplier and/or receive supplies such as continence products and welfare food from community services, you should ensure you have sufficient supplies as you may encounter difficulties in obtaining these over the festive holiday weekends. Minor Ailments Pharmacists can provide advice and over the counter remedies for a wide range of ailments. In addition, the NHS Minor Ailment Service is available from all community pharmacies in Scotland. You qualify for this service if you are registered with a GP surgery in Scotland, don t live in a nursing or residential care home and were previously exempt from prescription charges under age, illness or income grounds. Once registered, you can have a consultation with a pharmacist without an appointment. Your pharmacist will offer you advice and may supply an appropriate medicine to treat your symptoms free of charge. Pharmacy First Pharmacy First is a new NHS Scotland service available from community pharmacies in NHSGGC from 4th December 2017 onwards. Designed to ease pressure on GP practices and out-of hours services, it utilises the expertise of pharmacists to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women aged years and impetigo for those over 2 years of age. Patients must be registered with a GP practice in Scotland and would normally be expected to attend the pharmacy to allow the pharmacist to assess the symptoms before deciding on whether to offer advice, treatment on the NHS or to refer to another clinician. Please go to pages for detailed information on the pharmacy opening hours over the festive holiday weekends. 6 7

You should be aware there are some exclusions which can prevent your pharmacist from treating you and you may need to be referred to your GP. Urinary Tract Infection Impetigo 8 Are you a woman aged between 16 and 65 with any of the following: Burning or stinging sensation on passing urine? Need to pass urine frequently? Need to pass urine urgently? Do you have any of the following: Minor skin infection on one area of the body? Red sores that pop easily and leave a yellow crust? Fluid-filled blisters? Itchy rash?

6 MINOR AND MAJOR EMERGENCIES Within NHSGGC there are five A&Es that remain open all year round to treat patients who have a serious injury or medical emergency. They are at: the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) in Paisley and, Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock. It is important that you only use the A&E for serious injuries and major emergencies. For everything else there are local hospital based Minor Injury Units (MIUs), GP services (including out-of-hours via NHS 24) and your local pharmacy. If you think it is an emergency phone 999. For minor injuries such as cuts (including ones that need stitches), broken bones, sprains and minor burns go to one of our locally based Minor Injury Units. We have three dedicated MIUs in NHSGGC. They are at: New Stobhill Hospital, New Victoria Hospital and the Vale of Leven Hospital. These units open between 9am - 9pm every day of the year. Outwith these times you should go to your local A&E. There are also dedicated areas to treat minor injuries within each of the five A&Es. If you have a minor illness such as stomach upsets, coughs, running a high temperature then self-care, pharmacy or your GP is the answer. You should not go to an MIU for treatment. An MIU does not deal with illnesses. If your child needs emergency care, know where to go The A&E of the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC), the RAH in Paisley and Inverclyde Royal Hospital are open all year round to treat children with a medical emergency or serious injury. Major Emergency If your child is seriously injured or becomes so unwell that you think it is an emergency you should dial 999. The Scottish Ambulance Service will take your child to the new RHC unless they deem it more appropriate to go to a closer A&E. Minor Injury If your child has a minor injury such as a cut (including one that may require stitches) a minor burn or a broken bone there are a range of options for speedy treatment depending on his or her age: If you live in Greater Glasgow Under 1-year-olds: Go to the Royal Hospital for Children A&E. 1 to 5-year-olds: Go to either the Royal Hospital for Children A&E or Glasgow Royal Infirmary A&E. 5 to 15-year-olds: Go to the nearest Minor Injury Unit. These are located at New Stobhill Hospital and the New Victoria Hospital. You can also attend either the new Royal Hospital for Children A&E in Govan or Glasgow Royal Infirmary A&E (both also have a dedicated area to treat minor injuries). If you live in the Clyde Area Under 1-year-olds: Go to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley 1 to 5-year-olds: Go to either the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock or the Vale of Leven Minor Injury Unit. 5 to 15-year-olds: Go to the nearest Minor Injury Unit. These are located at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock or the Vale of Leven Minor Injury Unit (both A&Es have a dedicated area to treat minor injuries). Minor Illness 0-15 Years If it is a minor illness such as stomach upsets, coughs, running a high temperature then self-care, pharmacy or your GP is the answer. (See page 2 in this booklet for more information). If your child is unwell, you should NOT take them to an MIU for treatment. An MIU does not deal with illnesses. To find your nearest A&E or Minor Injury Unit simply go to and enter your postcode on the Find your nearest section
