5 Butterflies and Field Crickets The other day I saw a Swallowtail butterfly. Not in Devon but in France. Newly emerged from its chrysalis it was absolutely perfect, none of its tiny, powdery scales missing. Annoyingly, to begin with, the insect would not settle for me to take a close-up photograph. After following its fluttering movements for about ten minutes, finally, my patience was rewarded and I got some great shots. What a glamour queen/king of the insect world! A few days earlier I saw another butterfly, a Peacock, the one with conspicuous eyespots on its wings. It was tatty and had lost its former glory due to recent rain and wind eroding away its colourful scales. Was it worth a photo? I decided that it was. Perhaps you have heard the rarely seen Field Cricket. These insects provide an almost constant background chorus during warm weather: I love hearing them when in France. They live in holes in the ground and emerge into the open to assert their presence with their high-pitched buzzing/whizzing. One afternoon I found one walking up a wall: a great photo opportunity! It s not the most handsome of critters, with its bulbous, alienlike head, very long antennae and spikey legs. To me, though, it was beautiful, and I took lots of photos. How like human life. Some of us appear beautiful, others have lost their former glory. Then there are those who may seem unattractive, but are really amazing and wonderful to those with eyes to see. Jesus - the one who gives us big clues as to what God s like - saw the deformed leper, the shabby beggar and the socially dodgy with the same eyes of love as his chosen disciples. And that s an insight into how God s presence, peering out through our eyes, whoever we are, inspires us to love and respect all those created as the Bible puts it in God s image. Love is tough. It was never meant to be easy! 8 HATHERLEIGH COUNCIL Notes from last meeting June 12th 2018 Next meeting July 10th For more information see our website Your 10 Councillors are Clare Tyson (Chair/Mayor), Rachel Laycock (Deputy), Ian Trenaman, Deb Laing- Trengove, Claire Gladstone, Peter Back, Ben Bailey, Andrea Kimber, Kariss Madders, Jeff Newman. In the public session we listened to comments about the planning application on Park Road. We also heard about a project idea being created to encourage wild flower verges. The Air Ambulance night landing site project is progressing with updates about costings and grants. We re now at a stage to bring all this together and also begin looking at planning permission. Mrs Munn s fundraising pot is growing thank you to those who have generously contributed donations. Maintenance Issues: Weeds around town: We are to request WDBC undertake a widespread street clean which incorporates the removal of weeds as part of the process. Please be aware this will only be a temporary measure and so please help keep the areas in front of your properties weed free. Runnon Moor Ruby Trail bench and dog bin: It was reported that DCC have installed a concrete pad ready for siting the bench. The choosing of bench, bins and contractor will be decided next meeting. Yellow lines/loading bay: further discussion is to be had with DCC over its placing of the loading bay due to large vehicles still not having enough room to park. And we will place a request for them to look at expanding the lined area near Red Lane to alleviate access problems. Millennium Corner bushes are to be removed as they have grown too large and are hiding the area. Any suggestions welcome for what to replant in the wall. Hurray! the dead tree in the car park has finally been dealt with. We are looking for a Playpark Equipment Maintenance person. Insurance does not cover a volunteer to undertake this specialised role. If there is anyone in the community who has this knowledge please get in touch. Dog mess: To remind those few dog owners who selfishly disregard and disrespect their community a fixed penalty notice of 80 is payable if caught. This can increase to 1000 if you end up in court. Be aware the eyes of the community are on you so do the right thing! Dog mess can be put in any litter bin, and there are numerous around town. Market: We have been informed that Kingswood Homes have submitted their planning application into WDBC and it is awaiting verification before it is released for full planning process consultation. The school flower bed Cob Horse Project has now been completed and Councillors commented on what a successful project this is. It is a lovely attraction for the Town and the school children. A huge appreciative well done is expressed to Alain Pezard, Beaford Arts, and the Primary School. And a thanks to Mr Brandon-King and Cllr Newman for helping out with the logistics of soil and stone manoeuvring. Hanging baskets: Please adopt a basket and ensure it gets regular water in dry spells, they are a lovely addition to the town in summer. Library Services Consultation: take a look at our website for the link about rural library services and their re- 8 Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne, Jacobstowe, Northlew and Monkokehampton July 2018

9 quests for suggestions on how to improve this service. Drains/speeding/road issues: We would encourage anyone with concerns about serious issues of flooding, speeding, dangerous parking to send reports to Devon County Council or West Devon Borough Council using their online Report Problems pages. This is very simple to do so familiarise yourself with the process. Due to council budgets being tight some issues will only be dealt with if the profile of a problem builds until it cannot be ignored. Complaints on facebook do not get recorded or bring the issue to the attention of authorities. And finally, dates to look out for in June: OkeRail coffee morning Old Schools Tuesday 26th. Air Ambulance Night Landing Fund coffee morning, Old Schools, Saturday 30th. Space is short here. A full account of meetings are available in the minutes, these are available on the notice board at Millennium Square or the Town Council website. Correspondence to the Council should be addressed to the Clerk and for inclusion at a meeting be received 4 days prior to the meeting date. Correspondence received after that date will be considered at the following meeting. Clerk: Mrs. R.A.Lock, Cleave Farm, Dolton, Winkleigh EX19 8QT. 10 Hatherleigh School We have never enjoyed so many days and activities on the field! The school has really been able to make the most of having such wonderful outdoor facilities this summer and we are very grateful to all those who help to create and maintain them. Mr Cole works really hard to keep the sports field cut and marked according to the season. The PTFA and volunteers have added to our woodland area and at the end of half term many families enjoyed the story telling of Clive Pigg in the amphitheatre. Gardening Club are taking part in the Rotary Gardening Competition and the garden has never looked better or been more productive. Several children entered the growing in a welly competition with some imaginative entries! They have also been able to sell some of their produce to raise funds for seeds and compost for the autumn. This weekend Year 5 really put the school grounds to good use with a camp -over at school. Led by Potheridge Outdoors Centre (on the Torrington road) the children went gorge scrambling and climbing on Dartmoor during the day, returning back to school to make and cook their own pizzas in the woodland pizza oven. An evening of activities took place before they retired to their tents and slept until morning well most of them did! Other classes have been equally busy with trips out or planned (Okehampton Castle, the Community Litter Pick, Okehampton Forest School, Newquay Zoo, Bude and the Year 6 residential which included Coasteering amongst other exciting activities.) The children have continued to impress us with their willingness to have a go and meet new challenges an ethos which we strive to develop inside and beyond the classroom. Year 2 have been busy fundraising for an extra trip by making biscuits, cards and friendship bracelets and surpassed their own expectations. We were also very fortunate to welcome Image Musical Theatre to school last Play together... learn together at Exbourne Pre-School Tel: Methodist Church Hall, Tel: exbournepreschool@yahoo.co.uk Sessions available for 2-5 year olds: Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday; 9:15am to 3:15pm. And that children aged 2 may get 15 hours free 2gether funding? Please come and have a look at our beautiful learning environment and talk through the funding options. 11 Hatherleigh Primary School week to watch an excellent production of Wind in The Willows. Concerns about protecting our children and internet safety are never far from our minds and frequently addressed in lessons and in assemblies. We know that many parents share our concerns so we were delighted that so many parents came to our evening workshop on keeping children safe led by the CAP (Children Assault programme). We are also grateful to the PTFA who are helping to fund three hour workshops for all the children on keeping safe and building resilience over the next two weeks. We hope that many of the local community will be able to join us for our Fun Day and Circus on Saturday 14th July. There are posters around town with more information we look forward to welcoming you to our school and giving you the opportunity to see what we have on offer! Five Parish Councillors were in attendance together with two members of the public. Cllr Blakeman was re-elected Chairman for the forthcoming year with Cllr Hedley the Vice Chairman. During Public Speaking Time, one member of the public spoke about a letter she had sent to the Chairman. She also expressed her disappointment that no representative from the Borough Council was in attendance as she was considering taking the matter further. The Chairman explained that a copy of the letter had been forwarded to the Borough Councillor but to date no reply had been received. A formal response would be made after all parties have been consulted. Cllr Hedley reported that the Neighbourhood Plan Group had received a complaint about the lack of landowner consultation in relation to the Local Green Space assessment process. The group were preparing a report assessing each of the nominated sites against National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) criteria in a transparent and objective way, which will be evidence based. Landowners would be contacted and informed of the assessment process. Other work being carried out by the group included a local landscape character assessment. The following planning applications were discussed: Councillors supported an application to construct a side extension and associated works at 10 Manor Gardens Exbourne. They also supported a revised plot design arrangements to a previous planning consent for nine dwellings at Woodclose Exbourne. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 26 June 2018 in Exbourne Village Hall at 8 pm. 25 Exbourne, Sampford Courtenay & Jacobstowe WI The latest meeting was held on June 7 in Exbourne village hall. The president (Margaret Cleveland) welcomed everyone and Jerusalem was sung. The speaker was Bryan Hollingsworth from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. He had brought a puppy with him, which he and his wife were keeping until it is old enough to be trained. He explained how the charity mostly breed their own puppies, usually Cocker Spaniels and Labradors. The dogs are matched up with their new deaf owners, to tell them if the phone is ringing or someone at the door, etc. Princess Anne is patron of the charity and they do not get any government help. Bryan had brought toy dogs for sale and several were bought by the members. After tea and biscuits the business was dealt with. It is hoped to arrange a visit to the Solland Cider Farm at the next meeting. Members were invited to attend Waitrose on June 8 to pick up the cheque for 230, which had been realised by the Community Matters scheme. The next walk by the Walking Group is to be on Friday June 29 around Cadham and Woodhall. The Annual Outing is on July 23 to Buckfast Caves, the Valiant Soldier Museum and Buckfast Abbey. There had been a meeting to decide on the subject for the Okehampton Show exhibit, the subject being Anniversaries. FOM winners were Ethel Nancekivell and Nicky Craig. Winners of the competition were Nicky Craig and Sally Kenealy The next meeting is on Thursday July 5 in Exbourne village hall at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Alex Leger, a Blue Peter Producer. Non-members very welcome. Margaret Weeks Can you help make a difference in Exbourne? Exbourne's award winning community shop, café and post office is looking for more volunteers. The shop already has over twenty people who give as little as an hour a week of their time. As with anything... many hands makes light work! Some volunteers help out on the till, others with stacking shelves or putting out the newspapers. Those who already volunteer say it's a really positive experience that's helped them get to know people and become part of our community. The speaker was Andrew Thompson, from Tavistock and he spoke about 'Tavistock years of History'. He showed slides of the huge Benedictine Abbey, which covered a large area next to the church and covering Bedford Square and surrounding areas. There are several buildings still to be seen which were part of the Abbey After the Abbey, the next influence on the town was the Dukes of Bedford. There were numerous mines around the town, mining tin, copper and arsenic. The canal was built to Morwellam which carried the mined products to the River Tamar and also carried goods back to the town. There were also fascinating slides which showed how the town had developed through the ages and pictures of the unique cottages built for the workers by the Dukes of Bedford. Andrew was thanked by Mike Luxton (chairman). Next month the Group are visiting the Fairground Heritage Museum at Lifton on July 17. 28 HATHERLEIGH Dog Poo How long must we endure some very uncaring dog owners/walkers who persist in letting their pets urinate on our cars, planters and doorsteps? Not only this but they leave piles of dog poo (in green bags, if bagged at all) outside our houses...what are they thinking of? How would they like it if we, more thoughtful, residents left similar gifts outside their homes? Hatherleigh is blessed with plenty of bins and grassy areas why will they not use them?. PLEASE, PLEASE END THIS THOROUGHLY SELFISH AND UN- HYGIENIC BEHAVIOUR. We love our pets and THEY aren't responsible - but their owners and walkers are Sue Hall Hatherleigh Bell Ringers The results from the recent Bell Ringing Competition, held on Saturday June 2nd are as follows: Novice1st- Hatherleigh 2- (17)2nd- Chagford 2- (19)3rd- Hatherleigh1 - (21)4th- Sampford Courtenay - (28)5th - Chagford 1- (31) Intermediate 1st- Sampford Courtenay - (16)2nd- Chagford - (20)3rd- Hatherleigh 1 - (27)4th- Hatherleigh 2 - (32) Main 1st- South Tawton - (23)2nd- Sampford Courtenay A - (27)3rd- Hatherleigh - (35)4th- Chagford B - (60)5th- Chagford A - (73)6th- Sampford Courtenay B - (78) Thank you to everyone in Hatherleigh who supported the Bell Ringers and helped to raise an incredible 245 towards the replacement of the bell ropes. We would also like to thank J R Carpets of Exeter who provided a replacement carpet in time for the competition free of charge. J R Carpets kindly whipped the edges to ensure the longevity of the carpet. A very generous donation. Thank you again to everyon Marian Southwick Just a thought Volunteers step this way. Most of us volunteer at some time, perhaps in the past perhaps now, maybe some time in the future. Volunteers make such a real and valuable contribution to everyday life in our town and the surrounding area. Where would we be without these wonderful folk who give up time, energy, enthusiasm and often expertise to help others. A genuine giant sized 'thank you' goes out to them all. Hatherleigh Parish church is hoping a few people may step forward to help in establishing a Parent & Toddler group. We wish to start the group in September, however we do require a few folk to come, unaccompanied by toddlers, to be around to help make drinks, be an extra pair of hands if a parent has two toddlers at the group and one requires a toilet visit, to ensure the second child is not left without adult supervision. The catch, well yes there is always one, you would need to be checked out and complete a couple of short on line exercises - these are to ensure you will be safe when with the toddlers. If you think this is some way you may help within our community in Hatherleigh, or want a little more information then please contact Sandy Flack Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne, Jacobstowe, Northlew and Monkokehampton July 2018

29 Sandy Flack, Anglican Reader & Churchwarden HATHERLEIGH HIS- TORY SOCIETY At the June meeting we enjoyed listening to Valerie Belsey talking about the "Green Lanes of Devon" and the stories they tell.she told of the walks along the lanes that take you to the cliffs of the Atlantic, the sunken lanes of the Taw and Torridge valleys, across the stretches of heathland and moor. These lanes were used by wreckers, miners, farmers going to market or driving stock, parishioners and highwaymen. Valerie was accompanied by folk singer Jim Causley who sang some of the songs he had written for Valerie about the "Green Lanes". Our next meeting will be on July 9th in Old Schools at 730pm, when Simon Dell will be talking about "Conscientious Objectors".Guests welcome 2. Monica Jones Tel GARDENING CLUB I am pleased to report that we made the very good sum of 365 for the Devon Air Ambulance night landing site appeal at our coffee morning on June 5th. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day, provided yummy cakes/ savouries and of course came to support the event. Our outing on July 11th is to two gardens in the Welsh Borders, just over the Severn Bridge! Dewstow gardens is interesting, with lakes and rills, but the real attraction is the restoration of a garden of underground grottoes, tunnels and sunken ferneries; a garden created in the 1890s but buried after WW2. they were rediscovered in 2000 and restoration work has been going on ever since. There is a cafe there, or you can take a picnic and then, after lunch, we go on to Veddw House Garden. Described by Alan Titchmarsh as 'quirky, fun, inspiring, this is two acres of ornamental gardens with topiary, garden rooms and a reflecting pool ('the hedges alone are worth a visit and there is much to learn about the use of plants' - Titchmarsh again) and two acres of woodland. It promises to be a good day out which I hope to be able to do for 25 inclusive. Don Cudmore and Neil Price May Weather Report Rainfall:-May mm/1.90ins (May mm/1.78ins With twenty five days in the month seeing no rain, many warm with full sun, rainfall in May was below average, being 23% less than might have been expected. In fact 83% of that rain fell over just two days on the 1st and on Saturday the 26th when a violent thunder storm occurred in the evening. Over an inch of rain, with considerable hail, fell over a period of just two hours and was indeed very local to Hatherleigh, causing some flooding. Following this the month ended with hot days and full sun.
