Skinningrove News July / August 2010 Issue 49 WHAT A GENEROUS VILLAGE! A recent series of fundraising campaigns shows what a giving community we have here in Skinningrove. You ll see inside that villagers have raised a total of nearly 2,200 to support Help for Heroes, the RNLI and Skinningrove Bonfire. Photo (above) shows RSM Michael Scott, with cadets Liam Crosby, Lewis Smith and Aaron Boyd. See story on page 2 Well done to all of you who gave and who helped in other ways to support these causes. Photo (right) shows Beryl McConnell with Mark Porritt and Drew Baxter from Staithes Lifeboat Station. See story on page 6

Another Great Fundraising Achievement Saturday 5th June was a day to celebrate yet more fantastic fund-raising work by Skinningrove people was raised for the Help for Heroes campaign and a presentation in the Village Hall saw RSM Michael Scott (see Skinningrove News issue 46) receive a cheque for forwarding to the fund. Michael told the gathering I m very proud to be a Grover and I wish to thank all who contributed to this great cause. Michael said he owes much to having been brought up in the rural environment we have here. It was a well-attended event with the Mayor of Loftus, Councillor Linda Bell and other Town Councillors present. Thanks are due to Michael s mother Jennifer - who chairs the Village Hall Committee - for arranging the presentation and for her dedicated work with volunteers in raising funds for good causes. In thanking everyone for their help Jennifer stressed the importance of recognising those who were brought up in Skinningrove and have gone on to successful and positive lives and careers here and elsewhere. The volunteers of the Village Hall would like to send their special thanks to Jennifer for her dedication and help in sustaining the Hall as an important part of the social fabric of the village. Bonfire Fair On Saturday May 29th we held our bonfire spring fair in the Village Hall. It was an excellent turn out of people; the place was packed! We had all of the usual stalls: tombola, cakes, jumble, bric-a-brac as well as prize bingo. We made a grand total of a very good effort from all involved. I would like to thank everybody who helped on the stalls, prize bingo and the refreshments. Give yourselves a pat on the back! Cheers Tina xx 2

Skinningrove s Got Talent! On 16th May Hannah Philpott, aged11, had the fabulous experience of dancing at the Royal Albert Hall in London. She danced as part of a troupe to Let s get this party started which opened a 2 ½ hour set. Mardi Gras Promotions organised the event to find and promote dancing talent from across the UK. This is not the first time Hannah has danced at such a prestigious venue - in 2006 and 2008 she danced at the world renowned ballet theatre, Sadler s Wells in London, again organised by Mardi Gras Promotions. In 2007 she danced on stage at Disneyland Paris in front of a multinational audience. Here s Hannah in full costume ready for her performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Hannah, who lives in Skinningrove and attends St Joseph s RC School in Loftus, has been dancing since the age of 3 and has taken part in numerous shows and competitions across the Teesside area. She enjoys ballet, modern and tap and aspires to be a professional dancer when she grows up. Hannah dances with Constellations School of Dance based in New Marske and we would like to wish her every success in the future. ART GALLERY After last year s successful Art Gallery Loftus Town Council is planning to host this event on the 15th and 16th October As we did last year we will welcome pieces from anyone who wishes to display. This is not a competition, simply a chance to enjoy and appreciate the talent in the area, and we welcome work from any age or experience. We also hope to attract a wider range of exhibits including sculptures, textiles, ceramics and other 3D objects If you are interested in displaying or simply want further details please telephone Alison or Sarah on

OUR OWN HEROINE One of the most wonderful characters in Skinningrove is Beryl McConnell. She s a lovely lady who has done so much good to help other people. Beryl was born in Buckinghamshire where she met her husband; they moved to Leeds and then Skinningrove. The house here was not big enough to hold Beryl, her husband and her eight children. Beryl had ten, but sadly two had died so they moved up to Liverton Mines to a larger house where they brought up their family. The family grew up, married and moved to local villages. When Beryl s husband died she moved back down to Skinningrove with her son Alan. Since this time Beryl has worked ceaselessly for various charitable organisations such as the RNLI, Cancer Research, Multiple Sclerosis, Homeless, Air Ambulance and Staithes Lifeboat because she wanted to help other people. She has managed to raise so much money in the two years since she started, helped by neighbours and friends in the village; the latest was for the Staithes Lifeboat when 326 was raised. Beryl was 80 in January and her family think it s time for her to take a rest, but does Beryl think so? We ll see! BE INFORMED AND BE SAFE! Recent incidents on our coastline show how little notice some people take of the information and advice available to us. Copies of the 2010 tide tables for our area are available for 20p from Saltburn Tourist Information Centre (Tel ) which is located in Saltburn Library on Windsor Road. The tide tables are an interesting read as they show the fluctuations through the year due to the phases of the moon and other factors. High tides occur slightly later as we go down the coast so high water at Whitby is about 14 minutes later than at the River Tees Entrance; it s good value at 20p! Don t forget that you also have free use of the internet at the Riverside Building; you can get help there and find out about many things...such as tide times! 6

BOROUGH COUNCILLORS COLUMN Hi one and all by the time you read this we will be over halfway through the year (scary) with such a long drawn out cold period for the first five months. We are used to the cold northerly winds but we seem to have had more than our fair share to date. Peter Scott has been elected Chair of the East Cleveland Area Committee. As residents will know this committee has in recent years allocated a great deal of money to various schemes to improve the environment in Skinningrove. Peter and his fellow councillors have made it their first priority to press for a solution to the derelict co-op building. The Council s Strategic Property Manager was present at the meeting on the 26th May to explain the action she is taking to press the present owners of the building to either develop the site themselves or sell to someone who will redevelop the site and rid us of what all of us consider to be an eyesore. We are also looking at how we can bring renewable energy into Skinningrove and save residents money on heating and lighting bills. An officer has been appointed to carry out a survey with all residents of the village to determine what your present facilities are. We have to do this so we can present evidence of need when we apply for funding. There are no trick questions or hidden agendas so please give as much help as you can. Also do not be afraid to ask to see the officer s ID card to reassure yourself that he is the genuine article. Peter and Richard attended a concert at Whitecliffe School at the end of May and the Year 4 children sung their little hearts out brilliant! What was even more brilliant was the fact that they learnt and memorised nine songs in only 12 hours. Finally we will be back on tour in July with our Walk and Talk street surgeries, this time between pm on Thursday 8th July in the following streets :- Skinningrove Road/Primrose Hill/New Company Row/Zetland Row/Grove Hill. Then again on the following Thursday, the 15th, covering the rest of the village. If you want to talk to us on any issues please put Skinningrove News in a window where we can see it from the street and we will respond. The walk and talk is extra to our normal surgery in the village hall, 10-11am on the third Saturday of the month. Cllrs Brian Hogg, Richard Rudland and Peter Scott tel:

Tree management to reduce flood risk in Skinningrove In 2008 the Environment Agency proposed to install a new trash screen on the Kilton Beck, just upstream of the A174 road bridge. Since then we have taken another look at the situation and found that this may not be the best solution for managing the remaining flood risk in Skinningrove. During March a tree survey was undertaken along the length of the river between Skinningrove and Whitecliffe Wood. This survey assessed the condition of the trees near the river bank and identified those that could be uprooted and cause flood risk during severe weather and high river levels. Since then we have set up a tree management programme which will reduce the likelihood of trees becoming blockages in the river. Every winter we will survey the condition of the trees, and then do any necessary removal and maintenance work within our annual work programme. We have already scheduled some work for Autumn SERVICES AT SKINNINGROVE CHAPEL Every Sunday at 6.00pm throughout July and August. Everyone Welcome Fusion Valeting CIC Hate Cleaning Your Car? 14 NEW MAYOR FOR THE PARISH At the Annual Meeting of Loftus Town Council on 4 May 2010, Councillor Mrs Linda Bell was appointed as Town Mayor and Chair of the Council, with Councillor Mrs Christine Swales as Vice-Chair. Cllr Mrs Bell is a familiar face in Loftus, being involved in many organisations, both Parish and Borough-wide. Her roots are in Loftus Parish, with many family connections still living in the area. Her previous employment has been in the health and care sector, and she has a life-time experience of small-scale farming and environmental issues. Cllr Mrs Bell is very willing for people to contact her for exchange of ideas, and can be contacted on or , or lindabell@uwclub.net.cllr Mrs Bell will be accompanied by her husband, Cllr Ian Bell, a former British Steel and Boulby Potash worker, who is also a member of Loftus Town Council. CALLING THE GREEN FINGERED OF SKINNINGROVE! Loftus Town Council is holding its annual In Bloom competition on the 22 nd July, a chance to celebrate and reward the pride the community take in their gardens. Last year there was only one (yet lovely!) entrant from Skinningrove but Loftus Town Council know there are more wonderful gardens and displays in Skinningrove and would welcome more entrants. There is even a best new entrant category to be won. The other categories this year are best front garden, best rear garden, best window box, hanging basket or container, best community project and best commercial entrant. Judging will take place on the 22nd July (Great British weather permitting) and will be by a panel including Loftus Town Councillors, Community Representatives and Redcar and Cleveland BC Neighbourhood management. As in previous years it is intended to hold a presentation morning in Loftus Town Hall, probably during August, to celebrate all the gardens and to offer the chance to view photographs of all who agree to have them displayed. There will also be a Town Council Shield for the overall winner and certificates for the category winners and highly commended. If you decide to enter and we hope you do - then application forms are available from Skinningrove Riverside Building, Loftus Library and the Loftus Town Council Office ( Please note the closing date for applications is the 19 th July 2010.) If you require any further information then please telephone Alison or Sarah at Loftus Town Council on
